According to Miller and Dess, mission statements are the driving motivation of an organization (1996). The mission statement of the Boys & Girls Clubs Indianapolis (BGCI) is, “Boys & Girls Clubs of Indianapolis believes every young person deserves to live a life filled with hope and opportunity. Because we care about our young people, we provide a safe, educational and positive atmosphere where they can prosper and reach their full potential”. This mission statement does a great job of embodying what BGCI represents and hopes to provide for its members. The mission statement is not something that is unattainable; it is a very well attainable and is a very possible mission. For someone who has never part took in the BGC, it makes them very eager to want to volunteer or have their kids or family members join. Research shows that having a strong mission statement is the first step to overall keeping a firm survival in an organization or business (Miller and Dess, 1996). Theory and practice have helped prove that

Continue Mission ensures that military Veterans and their families are the main focus of their mission and that they are given an opportunity to reduce their stress, improve their relationships, and prevent suicide. We utilize a three-pronged approach focused on improving and saving the lives of veterans through one-on-one services, group activities, and a large referral system of community resources that support and educate Veterans. Continue Mission is a 501C-3 non-profit organization founded by Joshua Hansen, U.S. Army, Retired and Laura Cantin.

An important element of our mission is to support both active duty soldiers and veterans. We have “adopted” overseas troops and send them “care” packages. We also hold a semiannual book sale to benefit veterans at American Lake Hospital.
Many serve in the community today through non-profits like “The Mission Continues” and “Team Rubicon”. The Mission Continues is an organization that empowers veterans to use that desire to help at a local level and build stronger communities, thus, their slogan: Reporting for Duty in your Community. Team Rubicon, on the other hand, unites veterans with first responders to quickly position emergency response teams. Basically, Team Rubicon’s mission is to gap the time between when disasters happen and the arrival of standard aid.

Above you will find the mission statement for the U. S. Department of Veteran Affairs. To explore how this statement influences the Veteran Administration’s communication efforts, we should identify the audience that the mission is targeting. Clearly the targeted audience are Veterans, their care givers, and their survivors. Communication efforts must always keep the targeted audience in mind by focusing on Veterans’ priorities at the Veterans Health Administration, Veterans Benefits Administration, National Cemetery Association, and at the VA Central Office. Consistency at each branch of the VA will give credibility to its message to Veterans and the communities who serve Veterans. The mission statement says that VA’s sole purpose is to care, to serve, and to honor Veterans. This is what Parsons (2013) call setting the tone for the communication process, moreover, answers what does the VA do for Veterans. This puts the mission in the mission statement.
