The Consumer Product Safety Act, which does not hold gun safety to high standards, needs revision by Congress to establish how gun locking devices and gun safes can control the threat of injury linked to firearms because storing weapons improperly increases the risk that children and other individuals will find access. The US General Accounting Office (GAO) estimated that 100% of deaths per year in which a child under 6 years old shoots and kills him/herself or another child could be prevented by automatic childproof safety locks. In addition, technology is currently being developed that would prevent a gun from being operated except by an authorized user. Guns that incorporate such technology are known as “personalized” or “owner-authorized” …show more content…
This could stop some suicides also by them not being able to use the guns because of the finger ignition, which is all about how you grip the guns trigger when shooting. The statistics show that firearms are one of the main cause of death, which is the reason why their need to be a decrease in gun ownership rates. If there is a way to make guns harder to obtain then the ownership of guns will decrease.Unlike its response to other hazardous products, federal law imposes no health or safety requirements on the design of domestically produced firearms. In fact, the federal Consumer Product Safety Act, which imposes health and safety standards on other consumer products from baby cribs to clothing and office chairs to hair dryers, specifically exempts firearms and ammunition from its requirements. It is critical and important that we identify a way to establish gun safety. Creating devices such as guns that can identify their owner, and safety locks can prevent deaths that are unintentional. One of the major steps that can be taken on the federal level is the amendment of The Consumer Product Safety Act which will cause the manufacturers to sternly look at the production of firearms and make changes to create a safer
News is all around us and is readily available to everyone. There are many flaws in the system that hurts the authenticity of the news when you see it. The media is indirectly part of the political system. Most news is either considered liberal or conservative by many.
Gun control in the United States has been a controversial issue for some time now. So much so that the Supreme Court even refuses to address this issue directly. Gun control really boils down to the the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Many people have different interpretations of the Second Amendment and the trenches are dug in deep on this issue. The Second Amendment can not provide the right to bear all types of arms to protect the people from governmental tyranny. If the Second Amendment was absolute, then we would allow the public to possess nuclear weapons, missiles, and other such arms, because like the 9 mm handgun that is an arm, a nuclear warhead is also a type of arm. The more our government restricts our rights to own
Guns are used for protection, power, and sporting purposes. Guns are beneficial to society when used by trained professionals, such as the police and military. When in untrained hands, however, guns can cause death to friends, neighbors, family members and children. Due to their small size, weight and concealability, handguns pose some of the greatest risks to the public, ranging from accidental death in the home to mass shootings in public places. Consequently, private ownership of handguns should be banned by the US government due to their irresponsible use in murders and accidental deaths, the increased dangers to others caused by their concealability, and the availability of alternative, non-lethal self-defense weapons.
Everyday 93 Americans are killed by guns. Whether it is due to homicide or suicide, it does not matter. At the end of the day gun violence is increasing exponentially. In numerous states, gun laws have been placed in the hopes of reducing gun violence. But now many people believe that gun violence should be treated as a public health problem. I for one feel that gun violence should be put in the category of public health. Every year more than 30,000 people are victims to gun related incidents. It has become such an issue that gun violence is causing more deaths than some life threatening diseases.
The right as an American to own a firearm has always been apart of our history. However, recent events have put into the question the second amendment and whether or not it still holds any real purpose in our society. Gun violence has constantly occurred throughout our history and has always been a problem to end. It wasn’t until recent that activists became so passionate about enforcing stricter gun laws or abolishing the second amendment all together. What would cause such a drastic upheaval? The answer to that is, constant reoccurrence of mass shootings all over the country, including ones involving young children. Once children started becoming casualties of these horrific events, society really felt obligated to try and do something
As the population increases its stocks on firearms, a significant number of citizens are at risk of being harmed. According to statistics, “In 2000, almost 30,000 persons died from firearm injuries in the United States more than the number of deaths from, alcohol abuse, or drug abuse… [in spite of] almost 20,000 laws and regulations regulating gun usage to some degree” (Kwon and Baack). Though several individuals are in fear of losing guns as weapons for protection, a greater number of laws will continue to be useful in maintaining the security of citizens upon significant new laws addressing gun control. Although the existence of guns is necessary to protect bear arms, gun control laws help reduce violence, decrease the homicide rate, and help prevent accidents from around the globe. New gun control laws should be enforced to ensure the safety of the entire population, and most importantly to prevent any gun violence as necessary to help save the lives of the innocent.
In the summer months of the year 2000, a horrible tragedy occurred in California that left two children dead before the police killed the intruder. A fourteen-year-old girl, whose father had trained her in the use of firearms, could not access her father’s gun when she needed to because it was locked in accordance with California’s state law (Pratt). This preventable tragedy is one of many reported scenarios that scream that there is no need for gun safety locks.
The student has to get the weapon from somewhere so they take it from their parents. Another solution to the mass shootings, gang violence, and suicides is a GPS device that is installed in the weapons. This would make it so that if the gun is stolen, the owner could track the weapon and deactivate it before the weapon is found. This would help with the black market guns that are stolen and then resold to thugs, gang members, and other trouble makers. For example, the GPS would make it so you could let the proper authorities know that the weapon has been stole and where exactly to find it. On another note, the GPS could be used to solve murder crimes. The police department could look exactly where the gun was and at what times, making it easier to identify the killer. The GPS enabled gun would also be able to have a certain range that it can be used in. In addition, if one is using their firearm for home defense, the radius would only be around the house. There would be less school shootings if all weapons had this feature on them. One could argue that this would not be a feasible option because of the cost of GPS that would have to be installed and someone has to pay for them. Another problem with this solution is if the gun isn’t locked up and does not have a working radius. In addition, forgetting or neglecting to lock up the firearm is a common problem. With this solution, if the parent doesn’t set a radius and doesn’t lock it up, the protective measures are basically useless. It could either be paid for by the government, who would probably raise taxes to pay for it all or it would just be paid for by the people who already own the
Although it is an American citizen’s right, protected by the second amendment, to possess firearms, the average civilian has no need for an excessive amount. The misuse of firearms has shown to negatively impact global society as a whole but most especially; the American citizen population. In the first decade of the twentieth century alone, the United States has seen an alarming growth of casualties due to the wrongful use of firearms. Gun control has become a controversial issue in the United States in a short amount of time, in order to further control the accessibility of firearms I propose in addition to background checks of both physical and mentals matters, for factors such as records of firearms in possession and number of firearms in possession to be taken into
In 2015, 13,367 people lost their lives due to gun violence according to Gun Violence Archive. The Archive also states that out of that number, 693 were children from ages 0-11. We can all agree that there is indeed a problem that we have to address. The solution to that problem, however, has been debated by many. I believe the solution to this problem exists in three parts: Mandatory training and licensing along with more heavily secure gun storage, stricter regulations on the purchasing of a firearm—disabilities and criminal records should be more deeply looked into before transaction—and finally, equipping teachers at highs schools with the right kind of weaponry to prevent mass shootings.
For a nation as advanced as the United States the death of thousands of people each year is an issue affecting and concerning every American. With this problem occurring almost every year, the question of whether or not gun licenses can guarantee the safety of citizens throughout the country has been raised. With the number of deaths created by firearms each year, the need for enforcing stricter gun-control laws has grown increasingly. In addition, with the amount of fear throughout the country, and concern for protection, many people are beginning to buy firearms through simple and easy ways. Throughout America there are numerous ways for citizens to find and purchase weapons, whether it is in a gun store or online, the possibilities are endless.
Some people like to shoot guns for hunting, some like to shoot them for recreation. Whatever the reason, when using guns, there are steps you need to take to be safe, whether shooting or storing them.
The United States is home to approximately 5% of the world’s population and 31% of all mass shootings. Through these mass shootings and various other methods of gun violence, tens of thousands of people die every year. These gun-related deaths primarily originate from murder and children accidentally shooting themselves. Although those in favor of gun control tend to believe that guns should be terminated completely, the second amendment prevents lawmakers from being able to do so. Therefore, in order to combat these causes, alternative gun control solutions must be made for each one. Gun-related murders can be decreased through the use of universal background checks. Additionally, accidental shootings can be minimized through the
Gun control is probably one of the most debatable concerns in the constitution. There are many scenarios in which you can see the good in pro-gun control and also other scenarios where con-gun control is good. Gun control should not be a plan the U.S government should take because there are many cases in which a firearm will determine you from death or life. And the right to carry a firearm is like the right to protect our freedom, and to self defend ourselves. Firearms are used defensively roughly 2.5 million times per year, more than four times as many as criminal uses. This amounts to 2,575 lives protected for every life lost to a gun. (SAF) The people that are most concerned by this issue are those that have lost someone close to them
Guns are needed. The main purpose is for protection. People think that by banning guns Americans will be safer. This is not true though. Criminals get their guns through illegal ways so it would be hard to confiscate all the guns. With guns taken away most Americans would probably turn on their government. Some people want to ban guns because they are used in crimes. But the guns are not committing the crime people are.
