How do I go about writing a one to two-page reflection on a computer program reviewing and critiquing my writing assignment based on a programmed algorithm? First, I would have to say I am insulted and discouraged to be asked to run my paper through a proofreading program. I thought upon completing this course I would finally learn to be free from relying on Word’s proofing. But, changing an apple for an orange does not teach me to be a better writer. Proofreading programs teach bad habits like relying on a computer program to do your thinking for you, and they are not always accurate.
Teaching students to utilize a program such as paperrater.com is cheating your students of the education they are paying to receive. Students can easily purchase essays that written by someone else online, would it be very different for a student to deceive a teacher by submitting a paper they did not write? How would you feel if a

Overall, I don’t disagree with the majority of the evaluation. but, the detail provided little in the way of suggestions for improvement but, then I got to the page where I received an actual grade for my writing of 93%. Here the evaluation states “it does NOT examine the meaning of your words, how your ideas are structured, or how well your arguments are supported.” Really! How can you offer a grade without considering the content? You are going to nitpick about sentence structure because you have a computer program that can do the work for you. But, whether I convey my thoughts in a structured manner and support my argument is superficial. Teaching your students to use an online proofreading service is purely lazy does not make them better writers. We all purchased a textbook required for this course, here we are at the halfway point, and we have only used our book once. Maybe we can crack the book open a second time before the end of the
This essay will be a self-evaluation of my writing style, and the improvements I have made over the past three months. Before I took this class I had not written a paper since the last time I was in college. That was around 2004, my major was computer software. For that major there isn’t a whole lot of writing involved. This was more of a refresher class than anything. To be honest I was a little intimidated, for the simple reason I had not written anything like this since high school. I will discuss how I discovered my writing process. My development as a writer throughout this semester, and finally I will evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of my essays.
Being the second youngest in my family out of five children, you would think that reading would be easy for me growing up. But learning how to read was a challenge. It was something that I never thought I would be able to do without a lot of help from my father.

My best piece of writing for this class would be the annotated bibliography because there was a structure that I was supposed to follow, so I was more confident since I knew what to write. My writing process didn’t change much because I would write the topic sentence or a brief sentence of what I knew I wanted to talk about in a paragraph, then went back to discuss my ideas after writing down some other topic sentences. However, I did change how I edit my papers. I used to go back and edit everything on the final draft, but this time around, after every draft, I would try my best to edit at least one or two things within a paragraph.
My first major problem as a student writer would be my overall style of writing. By this I mean that my grammar, word choice, and sentence placement are all contributing factors to the fact that my paper’s never come out onto paper as I in vision them in my head. Every time I finish a paper I always think to myself that I would love to have another teacher or my parents read over it and give me some pointers, but they aren’t always available when I need them. This is where paper rater comes in to play. Paperrater.com is an online proofreader that is free and easy to use. All you have to do is paste your essay into the website and within 10 seconds it gives you a detailed analysis on your paper as well as an artificial grade. It grades your paper based off of categories like spelling, grammar, word choice, style, vocab words, and even gives you resources
In addition to changing the steps I take in conducting literature reviews, I have sought out resources which will assist in enhancing my writing style and language. This situation has made me take a closer look at my writing, as I am always looking for ways to become a more polished writer. As researchers we tend to speak a certain language in our writing and use similar phrases or styles. It is useful at times to have these “go to” phrases but can also leave room for inadvertent mistakes to go unnoticed. As I continue to further develop my writing style, increasing my ability to express a single perspective in multiple ways will be imperative. Tools such as the free tutorials offered by APA on style, which breaks down how to write using APA style. Although some of the resources I have come across are targeting those who may not have experience with this style of writing, I have found it useful as a refresher and/or basic reference. Going back to the basics will allow for me to ensure that I am building my writing style on a strong foundation.
Smarthinking and Paperrater.com are tremendous assets to college students. These websites offer guidance on improving writing techniques. Within Smarthinking, the student has the option to choose what areas of evaluation are needed such as: a thesis statement, introduction/conclusion, grammar, and several other options (Smarthinking.com, 2107). Even though Paperrter.com does not allow students to choose specific areas of evaluation, it is just as beneficial as Smarthinking by providing feedback on spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, sentence styles, and vocabulary suggestions (Paperrater.com, 2017).
It is always good to have someone other than yourself to proofread an essay. This allows an extra set of eyes to review and provide feedback on the paper. Bethel’s teaching staff encourages students to take advantage of resources like Smarthinking and PaperRater. By utilizing these available resources, students are provided with scholarly critiquing to improve their writing. These tools also require good use of time management to ensure deadlines are being met.
Today’s standardized writing tests cannot be fairly or accurately judged because grading companies rely too heavily on technology to assess them. Many scoring companies now use computer algorithms to assess usage and mechanics in a work; however, computer based scoring
Throughout my writing career I never would have considered myself a solid writer as it wasn’t until this semester that I actually received my first A on a paper in my high school or college writing career. This came soon into this semester as I realized that something needed to change for me to give myself a chance at making an A in writing for this semester. These changes I knew needed to come from my writing process as I felt that my process was witholding me from achieving A’s on my writing assignments. After reflecting on my writing process, I concluded that I needed to change the processes by which I wrote and edited my papers. This semester my writing has benefitted from the changes to my writing process in the aspects of writing and editing rough drafts as the quality of my writing has improved since the implementation of breaks in my writing and multi person editing of my rough drafts in my
Throughout this semester, and the course of English 1010, my writing has changed a lot. I no longer view writing as an extremely daunting task that I dread with all my heart. However, I still do not find it appealing to write, and I definitely wouldn’t sit down and write for fun.
At the other hand, the English class has helped me build my personal assurance to reveal myself or perhaps expressed myself with words; that have been particularly fascinating personally. I've found delight in written essays. For me to get to that point it took me practice. With my first essay, “Love and Gold”, my professor had a conference with me to discuss about my essay. The professor and I went over it and I observed countless words were not written correctly. I perceived that some sentences did not make any sense. This an attribute to the lack of not proofreading my essays or not correctly proofreading. After my first essay, I
Reflecting back from the beginning of the semester, I can honestly say that I believed that I was already a really good writer. However, I have struggled with the thought of writing. Ever since I was little, I dreaded the thought of writing essays, but when it came down to get the job done I never struggled and always earned good grades. Up until around half way though this semester I still had this fear. I am thankful that this class has made me overcome the fear and thought of writing essays, even though when it was actually time for me to write them I did just fine. Throughout this semester I have mastered and learned the techniques of brainstorming, how to properly construct an outline, the different types of introductions, and much
The tips I found most helpful for my writing was to proofread my work, to not allow others to discourage my writing, and to have motivation to think outside the box. To proofread my work means to always re-read what was writing before I turn it in for grading. Proof reading is important because any first time mistakes made can easily be recognized and fixed. When I present my work I may not always have great input of my work, there will always be critiques and negative opinions of how I should write my work. However, I am to remain positive, take the constructive criticism and to not allow someone else’s opinions discourage me from writing how I feel. I also have to have the motivation to think outside the box and that simply means to demonstrate
In contemporary society the Standard variety of English is the most commonly used as it is respected and associated with a higher prestige. Its usage is also advocated by prescriptivists who believe that it is the ‘correct’ and only variety that should be used. Standard English is usually seen in formal settings, where its usage is necessary for official and public purposes. However, contextual factors play a vital role in determining the most appropriate variety to be used, which is supported by the Principle of Appropriateness. Certain contexts where a non-standard variety is necessary are in social media settings and in communities of different ethnicities, where they are undeniably required to create solidarity between speakers.
