Establishing Wind Power

Establishing wind power as a major source of electricity can be costly and can have many disadvantages; however, there are many important advantages that can come from wind power as well. Buying and installing a wind turbine is expensive. The cost to install a small “household-single turbine” can be up to thirteen thousand, five hundred dollars (Gipe 125). One popular home wind turbine is the Skystream. With this turbine, home owners would need to make thirty-five cents to forty cents per kilowatt-hour in order to make the amount of money it costs to acquisition this turbine within the first ten years of owning the turbine that is estimated to last for approximately twenty years (126). The smaller the turbine, the more it will cost. …show more content…

This has become one of the main concerns for people because energy can only be made while the wind is blowing. Some source of backup power is necessary (Smith 52). Wind Power alone is not able to meet the needs demanded of it at all times, this is unless some of the power made during periods of high wind can be stored through the use of batteries. Or another source of energy must be utilized to pick up the slack (per se), for example hydropower (Maehlum). There are also many environmental factors that contribute to the disadvantages of wind energy. These factors include the deaths of wildlife, disrupting noise, as well as the destruction of the landscape. Many birds, bats, and other various creatures that fly have lost their live from head-on collisions with the blades of wind turbines. It has been estimated that around ten thousand to four hundred and forty thousand animals have been killed by wind turbines. However, around nine hundred and seventy-six million birds have died from collisions with buildings. The loud noise that wind turbines create has also been frequently reported as a problem by people living near wind farms (Maehlum). Last of all, many have complained about a destruction of the landscape that wind turbines create because it destroys the scenic views (Alters). Also, viewers see wind turbines as an “industrial encroachment in natural and rural landscapes.” Shadow Flickering also can impact the environment in which wind turbines are
