Jack Runyon B2 Mrs. Nickell Monday, March 6, 2017 The Ethics Of Abortion Abortion is an extremely controversial matter today because every year, in the United States, 6.4 million women get pregnant, and half of these pregnancies are unintended, half of these unintended pregnancies end in abortion. (Indiana University Press) In the United States there are two real perspectives on abortion, there is the pro-life, and the pro-choice. This essay will focus on the ethical perspectives of both sides and the reasoning behind them. Abortion should be kept pro-choice because of the multitude of reasons women want them. In a recent study, 89% of women gave at least two reasons for wanting an abortion, 72% gave at least three, and the median number was …show more content…
This is a basic function of any animal and one that extremely influences whether or not abortion is moral, as we do not ever want to inflict pain on any innocent life, especially human. This however is not a concern with abortion as reputable studies show that the fetus cannot experience pain prior to 24 weeks gestation. (Pregnancy Advisory Centre) This is because the connections from the brain to the nerves are not connected yet. Also, to experience pain, a consciousness is required, which the fetus also lacks. There is also evidence that the fetus is sedated by the womb and generally does not awaken until after birth. (Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists 2010) All of this means that no fetus will feel pain during an …show more content…
Many people characterize abortion as a selfish act. (The Abortion Discussion) This however does not take into consideration the amount of care women take when choosing whether or not an abortion is right. Factors that seriously influence this decision includes financial standing, whether there is enough time to raise a child, personal hopes and dreams, parenting skills etc. (The Abortion Discussion) All these factors heavily influence the quality of life of a child, and if the standings are bad enough, it is not even proper to raise a child in the first place. The bottom line is that women undergo one of these hardest decisions of their lives when choosing whether or not to get an abortion. Financial standing and location greatly influence the life of a child and it may be an extremely hard life for a child in areas with lots of drugs or in dangerous unsafe
A fetus is not physically attached to the woman carrying it but more importantly its well being and health depends on her health as well. They are separated and acquire separate identities only at the time of birth. Pain can be perceived in infants only after 20 weeks according the Kennedy Institute of Ethics Journal. The reflex actions present before this period do not indicate any ability to feel pain. Abortions are almost always performed before 24 weeks.
Whereas Abortion is defined as the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often preformed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy; Whereas Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of reproductive, “health,” services, receives approximately a half-billion dollars of federal funding (Valencia)(Kurtzleben); Whereas, the murder of innocent babies can fall under the category of first-degree murder; Whereas, Exodus 20:13 clearly states,”thou shalt not kill,”(Exodus 20:13); Whereas, as of May 20015, 44% of Americans identify as Pro-life (Valencia); Whereas, life begins at conception; Whereas the 1980 film titled, “The Silent Scream,” depicts the abortion of an 11 week old fetus appearing to shake and, “cry out,” in pain (Kawas); Whereas,
Nevertheless the new techniques cannot solely be used to bring to focus issues surrounding maternal foetal abortions. The mother or woman is always solely responsible for the life of the fetus. Involuntary and voluntary movements made by the mother directly affect the fetus in place. This is the main reason that most foetal advocates argue that when a woman chooses to become pregnant, they assume the responsibility of taking care of the unborn fetus. They argue that they should protect the fetus even if it comes to a point in which they have to choose between themselves and the fetus life. The responsibility has always been the main area of conflict between the different parties. It is important to note that this relationship is not just custodial.
The pro-life and pro-choice argument is ongoing, but perhaps one of the most common mistakes when looking at the abortion question is to assume that all abortions are the same. Not only that, the argument that abortions should not be allowed under any circumstances asserts claims on the immorality of abortion as it emphasizes that abortion is wrong. On the other hand, to allow abortion does not imply that it is right, it merely says that it is, so if a person who is pregnant feels it is wrong, then they should also have the choice to give the child up for adoption or keep it. In this essay, I will argue for the position that abortion should be allowed under some circumstances, and that is to say that there are numerous legitimate reasons
“Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being,” (Genesis 2:7). This biblical moral became lost in the twenty century due to abortion, the ending of a life before the actual birth of a child. Controversial issues that a woman’s right to make her own decision on whether her child lives or not varies between the cases on how the baby was conceived and the ability of the mother to provide for the child, but as we see in Genesis 2:7, God formed us all and put his own image into us, so no matter awful reason she may have to make that decision to end the life, God has put his work into all of us and will always be there to provide and love for us.
However, conservatives argue that unborn babies are human beings and that abortion is taking their lives, which is murder. This person has unalienable rights the same as everyone else. Abortion is deliberately ignoring the sacredness of life.
Women need to realize that there are many other options for them besides abortion. There are millions of families who wish to adopt. Abortion takes a toll on woman mentally and physically. Before making the decision to end the life of a human being look at your options very carefully. My words to them are: don’t do it. It is not worth it, and you are murdering an innocent
In my opinion abortion should be allowed depending on the trimester of the pregnancy and level of safety for the mother. This is neither a religious or legal issue but a personal choice that must be regulated by the laws that govern the body of medical professionals who perform the abortion.
The idea of abortion has been a world wide phenomenon for many years; sequently, the stance on whether or not it should be legally permitted varies. Many believe that it’s ridiculous to even consider taking the life away from someone who has done no damage to anyone, nor it is to put their life at stakes for unnecessary reasons. All human beings have the right to be given the chance of a prosper life, but taking it away for a selfish causes such unplanned parenthood isn't enough of a reason. The other half believe that its their right to have the power to chose if someone dies or not, that life been one of an innocent human being. What not many understand is that this problem can be easily stopped.
The important ways of looking at the issue of abortion are most easily categorized into five major points, legal precedence, birth control issues, human rights, religion and when life begins.
Within the 21st century, abortion is one of the most controversial and debated topics consuming both ethical and moral issues within the United States today. As times and morals change, this issue is constantly being mentioned when advancements within science are made concerning conception and pregnancy in general. In retrospect, abortion is a very sensitive and personal issue. The debate surrounding the legality of abortion still has the ability to stir a debate among Americans, even after the Supreme Court’s 7-2 decision in the Roe V. Wade case that found the procedure a fundamental right on January 22nd 1973. Furthermore, groups that identify as “pro-choice” contend that deciding to have an abortion is a women’s given right, despite the
abortion the end of pregnancy has been a debating topic for decades Is abortion moral or immoral? People all over the role have different opinions woman believe that woman caring the fetus should have the right to abort because I want to choose for their own body but women should not abort a human life because it will result in
A topic that is still under much debate is whether or not women should have the right to an abortion. This is a constitutional right that all women must have in order for everyone to have true equal rights. The two sides of this debate argue whether or not the fetus is “alive,” whether abortion is ever necessary, and whether or not the procedure has negative consequences. While the “pro-life” side focuses mostly on the interpretation of the definition of life, “pro-choice” advocates stress the importance of women’s rights. A woman should always have control over her body without having to give a reason.
The issue of abortion has always been a controversial one for citizens of the United States. Abortion is the “termination of a pregnancy after, accompanied by, resulting in, or closely followed by the death of the embryo or fetus” (Merriam Webster, 2015). A citizen’s stance on the largely debated issue categorizes them into one of two very different groups. On one side of the debate are individuals known as pro-life supporters who feel that a woman should not have an abortion. Coincidently, those who feel that a woman should have the right to choose abortion are known as pro-choice supporters. Pro-life supporters point to the practice of abortion as an immoral one. Supporters state abortion is immoral because it takes away the rights of the unborn fetus, since activists consider human life to begin at conception. Advocates for pro-choice believe that reproductive health care decisions should be made by a woman, not by politicians. The issue of abortion has been a long-standing social issue that has ardent support and opposition that has affected American society historically, socially, and legally.
Abortion in today’s society is a controversial issue. With detailed and complicated arguments on both sides of this significant topic, it ultimately comes down to a person’s morals and whether or not they believe in pro-choice or pro-life. Abortion is very common. In America, 1 out of 3 women will have an abortion in their life, but the deep emotions ignited by this matter leave it little room to accurately and thoughtfully debate between the choices of whether abortion should be banned or accepted. Someone who is pro-choice believe that individuals have unrestricted control over their body, in regards to their own reproductive system. Those who claim pro-life advocate for full legal protection of their fetus and embryo, regardless of intent or other concerns. In this specific debate, my opinion guided me to believe in pro-life and the protection and preservation of it. I realized this choice is completely compatible with my morals.
