According to some scientists and academics, video games can actually make you smarter. The strategic thinking and problem solving involved in video games makes them good learning machines. While there's no substitute for classroom learning, video games challenge and workout the brain in different ways. Here's how: Like me most of you I would rather play a video game than do our homework. But what we don’t know is that we are giving our brain a decent workout while exercising our thumbs on the joystick. Researchers have also found that the subjects who played video games "were better able to keep track of objects appearing simultaneously and processed fast-changing visual information more efficiently" (USA Today). Video games have made it a long way from when they first started. Some games actually teach children how to read, write, and even count. Teenagers also state that a little gaming after school actually helps take some stress off from classes and the overload of homework.

Despite the multiple studies that have been conducted about the impact of video games on the brain. This will remain a long debated issue. There are some who argue that there is no impact on the brain from playing video games. Then there are others who argue that there is irreversible damage on the brain from video games. Some claim that video games can enhance performances, and hold beneficial value in training and even medical technology. On the other hand, there are studies that show video games can make a person anti- social and in some cases obese. The overall consensus is that there is some type of impact. Whether that impact is positive or negative, depends on who you ask.

A 2012 study took naive gamers that rarely or never played shooter games, and randomly assigned them to play either a shooter game or another type of video game. The gamers playing shooter games showed faster and more accurate attention allocation, high spatial resolution in visual processing, and enhanced mental rotation abilities. A meta-analysis concluded that these spatial skills improvements are comparable to formal (high-school and university-level) courses designed to improve these same skills. This same meta-analysis found that these spatial skills trained can be trained by video games in a relatively short amount of time and last for an extended period of time. Of course, these skills transfer to other spatial tasks outside of game. Preliminary research has also shown that these cognitive advantages manifest in neural processing and efficiency. An fMRI study found that the areas that control attention allocation were less active during a challenging pattern-finding puzzle in gamers than in non-gamers, leading the researchers to believe that shooter game players are more efficient in attention allocation and more effective at filtering out unneeded information. I’m here to argue that videogames can be beneficial to people rather than bad. A lot of people (mainly parents) say that videogames have a negative effect on children because they think it causes them to become greatly distracted, violent, socially isolated, addicted, and teaches them the wrong values such as vengeance and aggression. However, what a lot of people don’t know is that playing video games actually impacts your brain in many positive ways.
