Exercise 18.4 First, as the unit managers, we will listen to our employees’ concerns. Next, we will address the specific complaints about working with certain staff members and the lack of supplies available on the unit. We will investigate further to see which employees are not performing to hospital standards and then schedule a meeting to explore their reasons and work together to find a solution to the problems. This statement is passive aggressive. According to Marquis & Huston (2015), passive-aggressive communication is when an individual says yes to a question even though they really want to say no and may even complain about others to the person who asked the question (p. 446). An assertive way to say the statement would be “I would like the opportunity to be in charge of the shift.”

5. According to Marquis & Huston (2015), "passive communication occurs when a person suffers in silence although he or she may feel strongly about the issue" (p.446, para 5). This response is an example of passive communication, because even though the meetings cause conflict in the nurse’s schedule, she still timidly states that it is ok just to avoid conflict. An alternative assertive response would be "No, because the time makes it impossible for me to attend the meetings regularly."

6. The following response portrays effective communication in the form of assertiveness. The responder answers the question directly and in a way that is not aggressive or passive.
