"Management is the process of working with people and resources to accomplish organizational goals" (Bateman-Schnell, 2003, p. 14). The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Internal and external factors such as rapid change, technology, and diversity impact the four functions of management. This paper will focus on these three factors and their impact on Verizon. Organizing these meetings has gone from dependence on resource availability to selecting from a variety of meeting options such as teleconferencing, web share meetings, and conference calls. Technology has also impacted the means of leading a team. Projects are no longer initiated and supervised on site. Today, a manager has the ability to run a project remotely thanks to advances such as instant messaging, remote call forwarding, and wireless internet access. A project team leader can receive a call, go online for answers, and electronically forward documentation to the team from a remote location, or the comfort of his home. Perhaps the most effective impact technology has is how quickly results can be measured when monitoring the success of a project. Once a project is complete, tools such as shared databases allow each team member to monitor results real-time, and apply necessary changes. Technology also impacts Verizon externally. Advancements in communication delivery by a competitor often cause a planned project to be altered. The popularity of Nextel's walkie-talkie feature gave Verizon incentive to adjust focus its planned rollout of a similar service. Verizon supports a program to educate their executives and create a successful training program to attain their strategic business goals and business unit/functional-specific initiatives (Kinicki & Williams, 2013). This training program contributed to reaching their key business goals. These business goals are “to build a business and workforce as good as its networks, to lead in shareholder value creation, and to be recognized as an iconic technology company” (Kinicki & Williams, 2013, p. 257).

The corporation this research focuses on is Duke University Children’s Hospital, which is highlighted in the textbook. In my explanation of the four management functions, I will explore how they apply to my organization, my supervisor, and my position. The planning, organization, leading, and controlling aspects of management are what I will discuss in this paper.
The four functions of a manager are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. These are key elements that managers must understand to run a successful organization. I will view each concept as well as their roles to acknowledge how these functions have been related to my personal experience in the work environment. Behind the scenes of a manager, they spend an equal amount of time planning so that he or she can successfully achieve the leading and controlling functions. These functions are standard for any industry that is striving to maintain a strong organization. While reviewing this paper, try to think of the four functions as a method that is established to build on each other. The four functions must be performed efficiently, and when done correctly, an organization will reap the accomplishments from a well-defined plan. My own experiences of how the four functions operate illustrates that each role requires a manager to devote time and patience in order to ensure that the main principles are achieved.

The four functions of management can be a vital roadmap in developing a quality structure in which to succeed. Most of us are pursuing a greater interest, whether it be education, a trip or perhaps some other type of leadership role in their lives. Management functions are defined as “the ways that managers are grouped within an organisation to achieve specialist tasks” and refer to specific areas of practice that involve only a small group of managers who, usually, need particular training or experience and belong to relevant professional organisations. There are five major functions in most organisations known as “big five” (Smith, 2011): marketing, concerned with promoting and distributing products; operations, which involves the transformation of inputs into outputs; human resource management, which deals with people within the organisation in terms of recruitment, development and deployment; finance, responsible for managing money and lastly the 'recently ' introduced information management, which manages all the information technology resources used to collect, store and transmit data.
