Today, social media have become an integral part of people’s lives. People across the world with different cultures, beliefs, customs and lifestyles exchange information through social media. Facebook is a popular social media where people communicate with families and friends by sending messages and posting pictures or videos. Jolie, in her article on Mashable, assesses that children who make themselves busy with studying and using Facebook at the same time have 20% lower grades than those who are focused on their studies. Facebook not only causes children to have poor grades, but also it limits their ability to be creative and critical thinkers. Having not been able to identify whether they are harmful or not, children accept other people’s ideas on Facebook. They won’t develop their own ideas or create new things as they are too busy wasting their time appreciating others’ work and ideas. As Rosen et al. point out, in the book Are Social Networking Sites Harmful, a study by the Benesse Institute of Education in Japan have found that children who use Facebook and other social media are most likely to be late for school and class, and more than one-third of eight graders have confirmed that their use of Facebook affects their daily activities (54). Not being able to manage time properly could cause a huge problem in children’s future. Many people use this free internet application to read news, keep in touch with friends and so forth but it has some effects on the young generation. This has caused worries as to the effect of the time spent on these devices has on their growth and development. This study considers the use of communication information technologies and social media apps by 6th grade student’s. It observes the parent’s knowledge of the children’s use of these communication information technologies and social media apps and how many of the parents are friends with the children on the apps. This study was conducted from the use of online survey’s by more than 31,000 students. There have been several studies as to the effect that spending too much time online has on the students’ performance in school. These studies show a direct correlation between the amount of time students spent on Facebook and their deficient performance in academics and their GPA (Temsah, 2016).
