People are motivated by a variety of things and often have different motivating factors. Employers should be mindful of individual motivating factors when attempting to motivate staff to increase performance. While some people may be motivated by money, many are motivated by things like: recognition, promotion, and increased responsibility. Once an employer has identified motivating factors they are able to analyze a variety of motivational theories to design and implement a program that will motivate employees to go above and beyond what is expected of them.

Recognizing employees for accomplishments such as finishing a major project, reaching sales targets or providing excellent customer service can be an important motivating factor. Set goals for workers to strive for and offer rewards for reaching them. This could be in the form of an employee of the month scheme, a bonus, or a promotion. Some companies conduct meetings where employees are recognised for good work in front of their colleagues. This can help motivate all the workers in the business to strive for success.

With this being said, motivation is very complex and is continuously fluctuating over time (Maslow, 1954). Getting employees optimally motivated is very difficult, due to the various components that go into motivation. However, when an employee is positively motivated, they will be able to accomplish any task set in front of them.

Everybody has their own individual needs in regards to motivation. Depending on how motivated a person is, determines the effort that individual puts into the work and therefore, how productive they are.

Employees should always be motivated; this attracts talent, opens up new channels for innovation and creativity and brings in a sense of satisfaction among them which helps the growth and development of the organization.

Motivation is the key to why team players try so viciously. A team player motivates the people around him/her by always having a positive attitude. Being recognized as a leader, he/she must set forth a good example. There are two ways a team player can show motivation. They are always striving for mission accomplishment and constantly wanting the team to be successful. A team player strives for mission accomplishment by showing no concern for his/her own individual needs. This will make the team want to work together as one until a particular task is accomplished. Recently sales have been high, but a new report was just released that exposed some defects with our product. For this final paper of the course we will discuss the importance of teams within organization, and the importance of motivation within the workplace. These two facets of today’s workplace are incredibly important to an organizations success. In my opinion motivation is the most important area to cultivate in an organization, after all without an organization is only as good as its workforce. If they lack motivation the organization will never see its full potential, since the employees would not be giving 100%. The use of teams within organizations is just as important. In fact, 90% of corporate leaders believe teams are the solution to the complex problems presented to organizations (Meyer. N.D.). What is motivation? Motivation is defined as “an individual’s willingness to respond to the organization’s requirements in short run.” (P.71 Dixon, 1998) For the purposes of this research paper, I find the most fitting definition of motivation is to define it as “the force that Energizes, Directs, and Sustains behavior.” (uri.com, 2014) Motivation is imperative to productivity. A highly motivated staff often leads to high productivity from the workforce.

There are a host of motivation factors to consider for the leaders and managers of teams due to the complexity of people. This complexity means similar actions taken in familiar situations can have varied outcomes from different people. This is often due to the underlying foundations of values and beliefs formed over people’s lives. At the heart of the individual is the core beliefs that become deeply engrained once adulthood is achieved, some of them are derived from culture and society mixed with other personal and singular values. Surrounding our beliefs and values are our attitudes and feelings towards our experiences, these are often fluid to change depending on events and experiences. Finally, how we behave is the outward manifestation of these underpinning values and attitudes and this behaviour will have direct correlation with whether or not any tasks carried out are effective. Consequently to change anyone’s behaviour it is necessary to alter the attitudes or values of a person to have a long lasting effect.
