Fascism: A Political Ideology: War I In Germany

While both Italian and German fascism in the interwar years were very similar, they were ultimately more different due to their political ideologies, foreign policies and the structure of their respective parties. Fascism, while not having a concrete definition can be defined by multiple attributes. Fascism usually consist of a ultra right wing, oppressive and authoritarian government that places a heavy emphasis on national identity. As such, fascist governments promote violence and the expansion through wars with the intent of imperialism.

By definition fascism is a form of government that is ruled by one person as a dictator often times a violent and aggressive one.  Fascists dictators are against democratic governments, where the people are free and rule.  Examples of a famous fascist leaders are Benito Mussolini, ruler of Italy from nineteen twenty-two to nineteen forty-three and Adolf Hitler, possibly one of if not the most infamous dictators in all of history. Hitler was a violent dictator of Nazi Germany from nineteen thirty-four to nineteen thirty-five.  These two men exemplify everything that fascism stands for, ruling with fear, aggression, and zero freedom for the people.

This essay will explore the various social, economic and political events and circumstances that arose in the early 20th century and together contributed to the emergence of fascism with reference to Germany specifically. The analysis will explore the impact of WW1, a change in social structures with ideologies and beliefs, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression. The continual crisis year after year in all aspects pushed German society to turn to fascism as a way off counteracting everything that had carried the state down.

The primary ideology of fascism, founded by Benito Mussolini, is nationalism: They believe that their nation (of which fascism is incorporated) is above all, and is the most worthy thing one could fight for. In terms of foreign affairs, the fascist nation should always be put first. Within a fascist country, the people are obligated to be obedient to the state and that the state should have complete power, as the good of the nation is held above the good of individuals. Militarism is also valued by the fascist ideology as a strong military represents strength within rule and enforcement. Furthermore, fascism is openly anti-democratic as it equates a nation to the majority, thus lowering totalitarian control and power. In addition, fascism believes all classes within a country should collaborate for the good of the nation, therefore opposing the ideology of communism. However, as fascism was enforced by both Italian and German governments, the differences between the two remain existent. As Italian fascism deems true to traditional values of nationalism (in terms of acquiring Rome), it is not valued as radical if compared to Nationalism Socialism (Nazism), a profound form of fascism. Unlike Italian fascism and emphasis on the nation, Nazism comprehends the nation and race as inseparable, stressing white supremacy and the philosophy of the Aryan Race. When Adolph Hitler came into power he brought with him his Nazi party and their ideas which align with Fascism. Fascist believes fascism is a “third Way” in economic policy. It is superior to uncontrolled capitalism that only benefits the few rich who hold the capital. It is also suppose to be superior to state controlled communism. Fascism and its racist offshoot, Nazism, were obvious causes of many of the actions of Germany and Italy during World War II. The primary facets of Fascism which affected German and Italian actions the hatred of the Jews, specifically blaming them as the reason for losing WWI, along with their glorification of the government and belief in social darwinism.

The Doctrine of Fascism by Benito Mussolini is a very influential document to many, which has also changed the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It’s my believe that this document is largely responsible for the deaths and mess fortunes of millions of innocent people. Having read the doctrine, to explain bits and pieces on here, it worries me to think a man could be so driven and ruthless to write this and go through with it and most of all to think that someone could actually reassemble this again. An example of a Fascism situation is when Hitler came into power in 1933. He rose to power promising jobs for unemployed citizens in the war-torn country. He blamed Jews for Germany's economic issues. This lead to his slaughter of 6 million Jews in concentration camps. After World War 1 many of the evolved countries went into a depression. It started in Europe, and then made its way to the rest of the world. The war ended with the treaty of Versailles and put Germany in dept. The German rise to power would begin in September 1919, when Adolf Hitler would join the political party known as the Deutsche Arbeiterpartei.
