Flipping Pages While Drinking Coffee
I never really got into the world of coffee shops – especially a coffee shop/bookstore all in one. When I used to think of Barnes and Noble, I thought of people like my cousin who is somewhat snobbish and would spend her evenings there reading and drinking her coffee. The other type of person that seemed like they would fit there is, I guess what one would call, a “bookworm” or “nerd.” I know that seems a bit harsh, but one tends to get stereotypes of things that are unfamiliar to them.
Through visiting Barnes and Noble I realized that my assumptions were entirely wrong. There were very few snobbish-looking people there. A gentleman who works at Barnes and Noble said that one of the main

After I left that area, I continued to walk around. I noticed many people sitting on plush couches and I wished that I could find one to sit on. I had no luck in that area. They seemed to be everyone else’s favorites too. So I kept on going. On the opposite side of the store was an area that was quite open, compared to the rest of the store. This area contained larger tables with more chairs around them. There was a group of ladies there who seemed to be having a meeting. After my tour of the store I went back to my friend and we sat at one of the few tables left. It was quite small and right next to the coffee shop.
After we sat down I tried to look around to see what “type” of person was there. It seemed as though there were many students there. Some of them were studying, while others were socializing. I had pictured that it would have a quiet atmosphere like that of a library. On the contrary, it was actually quite noisy around the coffee shop area. As you got farther away from this area though, it tended to become quieter as people settled down into the comfy couches to read. But as for the area that we were in, there seemed to be many conversations going on all at once. As we were sitting there I heard one girl say to another, “May I ask you a personal question.” My ears perked up as I waited for the next part and then she talked quieter and I did not get to hear it. I was so disappointed, because I thought I might have something juicy
Drinking Coffee Elsewhere is a very interesting story that brings up a number of thought-provoking issues in a relatively short format. Among these are questions of race, identity, and stereotyping. The narrator of the story is a young woman named Dina who feels lonely and confused in her new surroundings. As a poor, African American female at Yale (which the narrator portrays as a rich, male, and subtlety racist institution) she has difficulty adapting to the expectations of the university. From the very beginning, her differences set her apart from her classmates, until, from her point of view, she becomes a pariah, invisible and despised by the community. Of course, one must view
All customers (mostly students) had headphones on and where on their phones the whole time, so there were no interactions among the customers. Each staying in will sit in separate tables, of 2 or more chairs. I noticed two men with suits on, assuming they were businessmen, buy coffee and sit to discuss business and current issues. I also noticed students who sat to probably get some work done for class that day. There was a big menu at the top of the counter, which each customer would look at before buying something and a big see-through glass with different kinds of baked food. The line started getting smaller and smaller, as it came down to only two customers in line. The coffee, tea, etc are freshly made courteously on every order. I saw a smile on every customer’s face when their order is given to them, and a taste of freshness with pleasure.
An article in world.edu, titled "Is Coffee Good for Studying?", written by Edna Francis, discusses the effects from drinking coffee while studying for students. Francis states that drinking coffee helps us to stay alert and makes our concentration better. The author also tells us the three main benefits of coffee for students: enhances short term memory, increases focus and concentration, and improves mood, and Francis also declare that on different people the effect from coffee is also different. I agree with the Francis's statement that coffee has some benefits to student for studying. However, some claim in this article is not presented with a researches/studies or a specific researcher, so it will makes the information given could not be trusted.
The six customers who entered were repeat purchasers, meaning they purchased from this café before. This assumption was made because these customers knew what they wanted before they ordered and they knew where they wanted to sit. Two of the customers brought reading material and one student had a lap top. All customers appeared comfortable in this social setting and changed their behaviours to suit the calm, relaxing environment. My observation has led me to group the customers as follows: 1) Exuberant Students – young, fashionable and energetic students who perhaps think of coffee as a fashion statement or who enjoy sugar rushes, 2) Working Class Drinkers – employees who drink coffee to escape the world of work and 3) Indulgers – individuals who drink coffee because of the pleasure derived or those who seek caffeine fixes.
People’s interaction with others depended greatly on whether or not they were with other people. If someone was alone they did not sit at a table that had four or more chairs, instead they would opt for a table that was made for two people. Pairs of people meeting each other at the location hugged, but when saying goodbye, they simply walked away, not stopping to give a farewell. Groups tended to consist of younger students, while individuals were more likely to be older students. While waiting to order their drink groups would talk loudly, but upon sitting each individual would pull out something to occupy them and all talking ceased. The talking amongst others in line gained the attention of people sitting down, especially those that were sitting alone. If a group looked up at people talking in line there
Waking up to a hot cup of coffee, relishing the cool tingling sensation of a cola with your lunch, or relaxing in the afternoon over a cup of tea, all have similar ingredient caffeine. Caffeine has been consumed ever since the 2700 BC, with its conjunction in tea, for the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung. In 575 AD, the first use of coffee beans where in Africa where it was used as currency and food. Even more today, caffeine consumption has become an integral part of millions of people's daily lives. According to David Weaver, "Caffeine and theophylline are among the most widely consumed neuroactive substances. These drugs are consumed most frequently in beverages, but also are present in certain over-the-counter diet aids, 'alertness
The main topic of this article is coffee shops in this day of technology. Faris gives an example of when a man approached him to tell him that the point of coffee shops was to have face to face conversations with others. Faris argues that coffee shops are places where people go to do what they like, if they enjoy
Caffeine is one of man’s most successful discoveries dating back to the 13th century. Although its origins are not completely clear, we see the impacts of its use down to the 21st century. From local cafes and restaurants to school and fast food chains, the evidence is relative that coffee is truly everywhere in our society. One of coffees many uses was that it had the ability to make its consumers feel more ready to start the day. However, does caffeine really affect our moods and emotions? The aim of the following investigation is to discover how our emotional state changes when we have had a certain amount of caffeine, compared to when we are caffeine-free. The participants chosen for this experiment were South
One stop was at Macy’s. I went in Macy’s downstairs first where the makeup and purses are. I walked to the Coach purses, it was much traffic right there until I walked to the clearance purses. It looked like it was Black Friday, those women was on a treasure hunt. The women seem excited about the sale the purse. I was getting ready to leave until a perfume sample was handed to me. The lady was very loud and excited about the new fragrance. My last stops where Victoria Secret and Journey’s. Victoria Secret was crowed just like all the other stores. I saw two men waiting outside the store holding shopping bags. The store lines were extremely long, and it was kind of warm inside the store. My last stop of the day was Journey’s the shoe store. It wasn’t so busy, but it was some teenage boys already in the store taking picture of some boots. I looked around for a few minutes and
the downside to being addicted to caffeine or consuming too much of it. When one is going through withdrawals of not having caffeine, they can get headaches, feel fatigued,
For the purpose of this assignment, I decided to go to make an observation at Starbucks at the Indiana Memorial Union (IMU), Indiana University. I decided to sit alone at one of the tables there, facing the Starbucks counter. The weather outside the IMU was so hot but it was chilly inside the IMU. From where I was sitting, I was able to see people at the counter, people near the stage and on the tables clearly. I went to the Starbucks around 5pm in the evening and at that time it was really noisy. I could hear people laughing, chatting and I could clearly hear music playing in the background. I think most of the students just finished their class that is why there are lots of students there.
I sat in my chair twiddling my thumbs wishing I had something to drink. This place was so goddamn depressing. When I said that this guy seemed different, boy I was wrong. He was the same as the others. He was killing me. He took notes vigorously while I talked and he asked the same old boring questions.
There is a long row with two small sized black sofa’s sitting across from each other in the middle, there is a glass table set with a flower arrangement long enough to reach from one end of the couch to the other. With my laptop bag in one hand waiting at the hostess stand, I feel relieved, when I see that there is seating all the way at the end away from the loud laughing crowd for me to choose. The hostess has been viewing the arrangement of seating for the restaurant for what seems like forever to decide where to seat me. I repeatedly look at my watch having reached such a high level of frustration with waiting for the hostess to pick where she would like to have me seated. Everyone waiting to enter the restaurant behind me jumps and directs their attention to me as a loud BOOM! Is heard, my hand slams down on top of the hostess seating chart that she has been studying for the past decade to decide where I should be seated. Loose papers and pens fly like confetti. Looking her in the eyes and fiercely grabbing a blue dry
Most cafes are set up in a similar fashion. Upon arrival, you hear the sound of soft jazz music or introspective instrumental songs playing out over a P.A. You go to the counter and meet a “hip”, “young”, and “cool”, barista and receive coffee that (if judged in an objective nature) tastes like any other coffee. At least it should, but because on the way to the counter, you passed by several different types of arm rest chairs (each from different decades), and felt the soothing glow of the soft lighting ornamenting each fixture, the thought of this coffee grows increasingly stylistic, and upon the first sip of Java you say to yourself, “Man this place really knows how to make a cup of Joe!” Sadly, it is all a façade, a beautiful euphoric facade. In case you doubt my assessment, be sure to know that all cafes are generally known by this atmosphere. Maybe the chairs are of different sorts and styles, but the concept will remain. Maybe the music is the sweet musical stylings of Norah Jones instead of the composition of Louie Armstrong, but the idea is still there. Let us not forget one of the greatest sensations aroused while in a café: the desire to study. Is it not marvelous?
Coffee shops are well known as a place where you can get any types of coffee and related coffee beverages any time you want and need. Many coffee houses nowadays are serving also some food, snacks and desserts. Some of coffee shops turned into huge business and large companies like Starbucks.
