Food Drive Essay
Did you know that 1 in 9 people in the world doesn't have food security? That means about 795 million struggling people in this world; families, elderly, and young adolescents without proper meals.
795 million people hungry, and starving for days after days.
795 million people malnourished, frail and constantly facing sickness because they simply cannot afford food.
In the United States, there are approximately 50 million people food insecure. And amongst that 50 million Americans, 17 million are children, hungry and weak from the lack of a meal. While many Americans handily complain and waste food on a daily basis; being picky with their vegetables, whether if their greens are organic or not,

Considering our accessible resources and copious amount of volunteer and charity programs devoted to helping people, food security shouldn’t be a significant concern. However, there are still families on low income that have difficulty affording groceries, therefore unable to feed themselves and their children. As the result of this, both adults and children have to get through as much as days without food. Food, being the fuel and a source of nutrition the human body acquires upon consumption, produces energy and alertness. Picture having all of that taken from you; energy, alertness, focus and distracted, incapable to concentrate. This problem is even more serious amongst children because of their yet to be developed bodies and brains. The absence of food and nutrition can stunt the child’s growth, and most likely carry that burden into their adult lives. The lack of energy and the feeling of an empty stomach is eminently distracting, causing many kids without food security to have unacceptable conductivity in school, and also poor educational outcomes.Furthermore, some children without food security had to be hospitalized, due to the weakening of the immune system, fainting, and illness. These obstacles some children have to face are due to lack of food …show more content…
Food donation Charities which are in Malden, for example , ‘The Bread of Life’ and our ‘Beebe School food drive’, we all try our best to help as many people as possible . This year, for the Beebe Food drive, the school committee asks the parents and guardians of Beebe school to donate any food to gather for donations. Things like boxes of cereal, dried or powdered milk, canned vegetables, and even marketplace gift cards can be a great help. This food drive will be conducted by the school committee, which includes students and staff who want to make a difference. Like any other food drives, the donated material gets transported to a charity to be rationed. Conducting the food drive will also bring the Malden community together, as we will be working together to help many people. Although there are some disadvantages to a food drive, for example; donated food not always getting in the hands of the needy. These things are unfortunate, but we have to keep in mind not everything is going to be the way we intended. Nevertheless, It’s important to know that we are all helping someone, no matter how small the donation we make. Even the smallest difference can mean a lot and make someone else’s day, even though it may not seem like a lot. As Shakespeare once said,”How far that little candle throws its beams! So shines a good deed in a naughty world”,no matter
What may be hard to see is that hunger is everywhere. Yes, hunger is in Africa and third-world countries, but also in the United States. Childhood hunger is nearly a bigger issue than overall hunger in the United States. Studies show that hunger among children has a higher percentage than hunger as a whole (Feeding America 28). It is found that children suffer from food insecurity in every county in the United States (Feeding America 30). It is easy to sit back and think that everyone has the financial and physical means to find food, but they do not. Over thirty percent of all children (under the age of eighteen) in New Mexico live in food insecure households; this state has the highest percent in the entire United States (Feeding America
A. How many of you are worried about where your next meal will come from? Are you unsure of how you’re going to purchase next week’s groceries or what you will be feeding your children for dinner tonight? This probably isn’t something most of you think about from day to day. When you are hungry, you eat. It’s easy for you to grab a sandwich, order a pizza, or run through the drive thru when you are on the go. However, there are many families, not just in other countries, but here in the United States as well, that are going hungry every day. According to kidshealth.org, a child dies from malnutrition and related causes every 6 seconds.
After reading the extensive “The New Face of Hunger” (Tracie McMillan), my eyes became more open to the overall issue of hunger, faced by many people today. In a few words, I was absolutely shocked by the true meaning and examples provided of what exactly food insecurity is. Honestly speaking, when I hear the word “hunger” I think of a human who has no food, living on the streets. “The New Face of hunger” brought to my attention that food insecurity is much more than simply having no food. In fact, “In 2006 the U.S. government replaced “hunger” with the term “food insecure” to describe any household where, sometime during the previous year, people didn’t have enough food to eat” (The New Face of Hunger). Not only was I able to see the harsh
It was difficult to read that countless millions of federal dollars and many of our country's most successful efforts to halt the spread of childhood hunger and starvation have recently been withdrawn. And as a result, this problem of childhood hunger is not getting better but is actually getting worse. The most recent estimates compiled by the USDA in 1999 indicate that 36.2 million Americans live in food-insecure households, which means that their access to adequate and safe food is limited or uncertain. This too is very disturbing information.
Johnny gets home from school and makes his way straight to the kitchen. He is hungry and wants a quick, yummy snack, but when he opens up the fridge, there is nothing there. Now he has to wait until his mom brings home dinner at six o'clock. Can you imagine what it would be like to experience this every day? Unbelievable, right? Well, for many children and families, this is their reality. What could possibly cause this, what are the effects, and what are people doing to help these poor families? A large number of children do not have access to fresh and nutritious food, due to lack of supermarkets or living on food stamps. This lack of healthy food can affect childhood development immensely and can lead to obesity and other diseases. Many people are doing what they can to help, like opening community gardens, connecting farms, restaurants, and hotels with food banks, and organizing food drives.
Hunger is considered huge issue in the United States. When it comes to managing food sources, it is easy to get predications from children based on their immediate experiences of food rather than parental reports that rely mostly on the economic value such as mother, households etc.… because such predications for instance, cannot be more accurate as children express their felling just in daily basis. In the published article at San Diego State University on February 20.2017, "Children Are Aware of Food Insecurity and Take Responsibility for Managing Food Resources’’. Farm et al made extensive research about this important topic, and wrote surveys addressing their reports after the information they collected from the
Imagine your stomach growling, a feeling of emptiness, fatigue, and an inability to concentrate. Most people would associate these feelings with hunger and eat. Unfortunately, many Americans do not have the luxury of eating because of living in poverty. According to the Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of people living in poverty rose from 31.6 million in 2000 to 36.5 million in 2006. The number of people living in households facing food insecurity rose from 31 million in 1999 to 35.5 million in 2006. More than 12 million of the people living in food insecure households were children (Labue, 2009). Food America (2017) reports:
Hunger is a big social issue facing America today. According to (“Do Something.com”) 1 out of 6 people face hunger in the US. Also 49 Million Americans Struggle to put food on the table. America is the best country in world, we shouldn’t have so many people hungry. Many people have thought of fixing this problem but one company has found a way to help fix this problem, this company is Feeding America. They have been giving people food since 1979. They’ve helped out 46 million Americans. ( feedingamerica.org )
The second part of the book focused on the various organizations and institutions aimed at improving food security for those in need. There are “thirty-seven million Americans and fourteen million children who rely on food assistance” (Carney 2015:135). This represents an increase from previous years. The book criticizes the
805 million people in the world do not have enough to eat, that’s one in every nine people.
All living things need to consume some type of food to survive. Just like all animals, humans need food. With the population estimated around 7.4 billion, according to World Food Programme, only 795 million people do not have the necessary access to healthy foods to live a healthy life. The vast amounts of products being sold with large amounts of sugar and other unhealthy ingredients has been affecting the human population for years. As the result of low income families in “food deserts” undernourished families are becoming more and more frequent. Undernourished women and children are affected everyday because of “food deserts.” Low income areas have supermarkets, drug stores, food markets, etc, but the distribution of healthy foods are
For most us Americans, knowing when we’re going to eat next is something we very rarely think of, and when we do think about being hungry we still know where our food is coming from. Three big meals a day, and a few snacks in between, is how most of us live. It’s hard for us to imagine what its like for those who go days eating very little or nothing at all. But unfortunately that’s how it is for most of the world and surprisingly it happens in the United Sates as well. There are many reasons malnutrition can happen, and it happens to every age group. Even though there are many ways to treat it, in the
Food insecurity is one of the leading public health challenges in the United States today, since millions of people (children and adults) are food insecure because of insufficient money income and other socioeconomic and demographic factors. (Seligman, Kushel, & Laraia, 2010)
When students are involved they get the nutrition and food they need along with the skill sets needed to become employed in the future. The help the children organization adds into this by using a donation program through their website. With the donations they purchase mass amounts of food to deliver to churches, senior citizen faculties, woman shelters, recovery programs, and more. Help the children delivers on average 1.7 million pounds of bulk food each month, making that 35 tons each work day.
Food is one of the basic needs of a human being to survive. All of us depend on food for having a good health, therefore with the lack of food many people will be starving and malnourished.
