Genie showed many delays in her physical, social, and emotional development. She received little to no social stimulation, and was beaten for making noise. This resulted in her not trying to talk. She also had language delays which could have either been due to issues she was born with, or because of the fact that she received no schooling or support from her family. She suffered from neglect and malnutrition as well. Malnutrition could be related to why she did not develop on track physically. She also seemed to have some issues with mobility, possibly due to the fact that she was strapped to the chair for so long. She also did not receive love from her family, which is something that every child needs to thrive.
The men in the video had
Genies father, Clark and her mother Irene met at her work in Hollywood, California. After the couple married they had four children, despite the fact that Clark did not want to have children. Of the four only the second and the fourth child survived infancy, however both Genie and her brother experienced developmental delays while growing up. Shortly after, Clarks mother passed away leading Clark to become protective of the family. After Clark had found out about Genies apparent retardation he kept her isolation in order to protect her, during this time Genie was in complete isolation, she was left hungry and forgotten for years on end. Clarks Overbearing protectiveness over the family finally came to an end in November of 2014 when Irene, who had lost most of her eyesight, had accidentally stumbled into the Los Angeles County welfare office. One of the workers saw Genie and believed it was nothing more than an unreported case
* The girl was given the name Genie to protect her identity and privacy. "The case name is Genie. This is not the person's real name, but when we think about what a genie is, a genie is a creature that comes out of a bottle or whatever, but emerges into human society past childhood. We assume that it really isn't a creature that had a human childhood,” explained Susan Curtiss in a documentary called Secrets of the Wild Child (1997).
An intellectual disability, like the one had by Roland Johnson and about one percent to three percent of people, is defined as “a disability that is present at birth or occurs in the developmental period (before the age of 18) and is characterized by significant sub-average intellectual functioning, existing concurrently with related limitations in 2 or more areas of adaptive functioning” (Daul). Roland Johnson, though his life was hard, did not let his “limitations” limit him.
For example, Genie Wiley, whom is the child who was locked up and tied to a toileting chair in a room on her own for 13 years as her father believed she had a disability. This act of isolation has had a detrimental effect on her development. When Genie was found she was unable to walk properly, was unable to eat solid food and could not talk, this was believed to be because indications showed
“Genie” Wiley was born into a horrible home, receiving absolutely no love or nurture from her parents since they deemed her mentally challenged. Without being properly diagnosed, her parents simply decided to neglect Genie keeping her isolated and locked in her room with no social interaction. Tied to a child’s potty chair until the age of thirteen, she was eventually found by social services but clearly showed signs of severe abuse and developmental problems. Genie could not walk or talk and had to be taken into the custody of the state where Children’s Hospital began treatment and scientific studies on her.
Different disabilities may affect development in different ways. However, with support from teachers and parents, these affects can be minimalised. A learning disability such as Dyslexia (a common type of learning difficulty that can cause problems with reading, writing and spelling) could lead to a child becoming frustrated which could further lead to behavioural issues. Moreover, without assistance, Dyslexia will allow for the child to become unmotivated and prove to be a hindrance to them as they look to strive in later life. Physical disabilities such as Cerebral Palsy (a neurological condition that effects movement and coordination) will affect development as children will have difficulties communicating, eating and drinking and with their
Genie is a wild child who found in LA on 1970, she is a very extreme case of neglected the caretaking from adult. Her father believed she is retarder She spent her first thirteen years on tiding at the potty chair and still wearing diaper, she had never see, listen, being taught of anything in her life. While thirteen-year-old Genie’s behaviors may have been indicative of intellectual disability, her lifelong experience of severe isolation, neglect, and abuse raised a question for the scientists in Linda Garmon’s (1994) Secret of the Wild Child: Was Genie born intellectually disabled or were her abnormal behaviors and lack of language a result of brain damage caused by the extremely adverse environmental experiences Genie endured during development? To assist in reaching an appropriate diagnosis and subsequent treatment planning, I would choose to do a behavioral assessment, specifically, behavioral observation and recording to evaluate Genie. This method of evaluation involves direct observation of a child’s behavior within everyday settings
Already, thousands of genes have been identified, including those involved in hundreds of diseases, such as cystic fibrosis; Duchene muscular dystrophy; Huntington disease; Marfan syndrome; heart, digestive, blood, eye, and nervous system abnormalities; and many forms of cancer (Berk, 2014, p.57). However, if Olivia (3-1) is a disability child, it could be so hard to attend this preschool. First, there is no room for a wheelchair. There is no road for disability people, so it is impossible to go in to the classroom. All of the play that observed cannot be play by a disability child, because majority of the plays contains lots of body work. It is so cruelty and sad.

Special Needs: Serenity has an IEP and she is labeled developmentally delayed (DD) with speech delays. Speech means the sounds that come out of a person’s mouth. Children who have a speech delay may stutter or have trouble saying words the right way. Many delays aren’t serious, and most kids can catch up, especially when they get early treatment (“Spotting Developmental Delays,” 2015). Serenity is also delayed in her social development. She does not initiate play on her own with other
I agree with your argument; Genie’s case was actually very sad case. Still, I believe that if the authorities had not found her, her future would have been worse in the hands of her parents. Cases similar to this, are what have helped advances in science for generations to come be benefited. Despite all advances and developments in codes of ethics, its fundamental principle can be stated concisely: each particular scientist, in every research job, must make thoughtful judgments of how best to contribute to science and the human race. Each people’s lives in this society is affected by the objectives, successes, and quality of scientific research. However, it is essential for researchers to understand, respect, and carry their ethical obligations
Genie have problem in moving his body. She can’t properly move his body parts. But Amala and Kamala’s body movement is very fast even it would be hard to catch them.
Within the context of the proposed DNP project, several organizational barriers impact the design, implementation and the effectiveness of the project. By identifying and addressing each barrier the project can continue to positively impact the quality, safety and improved health of children with special healthcare needs. At the Duke Transition Clinic, the two main barriers to the design and implementation of the project are the diverse patient population combined with staff expectations and the culture and standards of clinic operations.
