Global warming is directly causing the rise in temperature of the Earth. The melting of the polar ice caps causes some of the most pressing issues including the endangerment of species indigenous to this region and the rise of ocean levels. Global Warming Global warming is the steady rise of temperature of the Earth’s surface. What exactly causes global warming? Numerous sources fuel global warming, such as deforestation, permafrost, and even sunspots. Obviously, many factors contribute to this cause, but something called the greenhouse effect is believed to be the leading component. The sun’s rays pass through our atmosphere and warm the surface of the Earth, and then the heat from these rays reflect back towards space. A majority of the radiating heat is absorbed by the greenhouse gases, hence the term greenhouse effect, and projected in a random direction thus heating the Earth’s surface even more. The temperature of our planet is gradually rising because of the burning of fossil fuels which releases carbon dioxide gas into the air. (1) (US Environmental Protection Agency. Global Emissions by Gas.) The graph proves that our recent dependency on fossil fuels is releasing massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the air. Over the last century, the growth of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has resulted in (2) increased concentrations of greenhouse gases. As the emission of carbon dioxide into the air continues, more and more heat will be trapped resulting in the
