What do you think of when you hear the word “genetically modified”? Do you think of how they are harmful and have no regulations or do you think of how they help improve our health and increase food produced. I’m betting it is the first one because the media has manipulated us into believing these horrible things about GMO’s without any real scientific evidence. The media right untrue articles because they desire money and will do no matter what to get, even lying.
I’m sure you heard of GMO’s, but do you really understand what they are. GMO’s, also known as genetically modified organisms, denotes organism’s with DNA has been altered and does not occur through mating or in nature (WHO). The media portrays GMO’s in this negative light

In fact, Dr. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, a highly educated astrophysicist, said that “practically every food you buy in a store for consumption, by humans, is genetically modified food” (Tyson).
In contrast to popular beliefs, there are in fact regulations and standards that a GMO must satisfy (FDA). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulates the food consumed and medicine prescribed for consumers (FDA). In order for a company to research, produce or market a drug or food they must first do extensive research and test the product on animals to ensure its safeness and effectiveness (FDA). If the product does not meet the health and safety standards, regardless of its manufacturing method, the item is not sold (FDA).
In addition, the media uses trickery to portray GMO’s as something dangerous and should be avoided at all cost which has influenced you to believe their dishonesty. The purpose of GMO’s is to enhance our life, not harm it. This may be through creating medicines for disease, increase crop yield, produce food with higher nutritional value and much more. Article titles such as “Why GMOs Can Never Be Safe scare the public into believing GMO’s are bad even though the media does not have sufficient evidence to support these claims (Mercola). In fact, when recombinant DNA technology, a types of genetic modification, was first developed in the 1970’s, scientists themselves
GMOs, (genetically modified organisms) have been a topic of interest in the social eyes for years. Since they’ve been created, many people have voiced and written about their opinions on GMOs, and whether they are dangerous or not. Created to expand the genetic diversity of crops and animals, many don’t know whether GMOs are good or bad, and neither do researchers. Though there hasn’t been any evidence claiming whether GMOs are good or bad, it has certainly not stopped the public from creating their own opinions. Since no one knows the truth behind GMO, it has opened a window of opportunities for companies including Monsanto to voice their support of GMO, while other companies like the Non-GMO Project voice their
With research showing that GMOs are bad for human consumption, there hasn’t been any policy restrictions made towards GMO foods. Here specifically it is up to the FDA and the government to pass the bill that would make these restrictions mandatory. Currently, this policy is being ignored and thought to not be necessary when factoring in human health. In other words, these large federal agencies are ignoring the facts and choosing to not make GMO restrictions
Relevance to the audience: Since most of the food humans eat is genetically modified, it is important to know what’s in our food and how it got to our tables.
“When you light a candle, you also cast a shadow.” – Ursula K. Le Guin. No matter what good some people believe they are doing, everything seems to come with a consequence, and the question is whether or not the good overpowers the bad. Many experts argue that Genetically Modified foods are actually beneficial to, not only people, but animals, plants, and the world overall. Some experts even state that, not only are they beneficial, but that they also protect the environment and aid food productivity. Most farmers actually recommend GMO’s because they are easier to grow, maintain, and tend to be more profitable; however, countless other experts have come to realize that GMO foods are untested, unsafe, and unhealthy. Studies indicate that
GMO’s are commonly misunderstood to be a negative way of producing food but contrary to popular belief they actually benefit americans and help america prosper. A GMO is a crop or livestock animal that has had its DNA altered and specific changes made to receive the desired result. Certain parts of DNA are either taken from or added to and organism to somehow better it. The use of GMOs in not as new as most citizens may think and can be very beneficial. GMOs are used quite often, they can
GMO: “Why is it legal?” “Is it considered safe amongst consumers?”. Those are the two frequently asked questions. If GMOs are used on farms, are consumers rights and health at stake? GMOs are bad because they can cause health problems, environmental damage, and violation of farmers and consumers rights. The lack of GMOs labels plays a major part. How will consumers know what they're putting in their bodies? GMOs are used in 80% of processed foods. Yet, consumers fail to begin living “healthy” lifestyle, the consumption of GMO will drastically affect them.
Genetically modified foods are safe and the government needs to allow more GM foods to be produced and sold. Pedro Sanchez is a director and senior research scholar at the Agriculture and Food Security Center at the Earth Institute; who wants to advance research and production of genetically
GMO’s are living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated or changed in a laboratory. GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism, most GMO’s are common in foods today. The process of creating a genetically modified organism is fairly new, but it is now commonly used, and becoming more frequent in America's everyday meals. When scientist create a GMO, they are creating a hybrid or a modified version of an organism that would not naturally occur in nature. The reasoning behind this is to create a new organism that can withstand diseases, have drought tolerance, or bring more benefits to the consumer. One major question most people have is; “Are GMO’s safe?” The answer to that is NO. Most developed nations consider
Imagine knowing what is really in the food on our dinner plates every night. Probably organic, naturally grown foods, right? That might be the case in some foods, but now a days, most crops are grow genetically modified (GM). GM foods are foods that have been altered with a gene or protein from another living organism to give it a quality or characteristic that it never had before. Some examples of GM foods are apples that do not brown and potatoes that do not bruise. These are made when the organisms are genetically modified to reduce the levels of enzymes that cause browning and bruising. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are unsafe. While they can be beneficial, GMOs are unhealthy for human consumption, cause environmental impacts, and have
Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, is a controversial topic that has come up in conversation and debate since it first appeared in grocery shelves as new tomatoes back in 1994 (Woolsey). GMOs have had an infamous reputation among the public since they first started being offered in the markets and continues with much controversy to this day. Up to 80% of processed foods in the U.S. are genetically modified (Paturel). Most people which one might come across will often debate against GMOs and why the practice should be ignored and instead how one should focus on organic foods as an alternative due to it being healthier and safer on the body. Are GMOs dangerous to the body? Do they pose a general risk to our health? Are the rumors about GMOs as true as people claim they are? Or is the fear behind GMOs overly exaggerated? On the other hand, there are arguments and debates on why the research of GMOs are important for the future as well as being quite safe. There are, of course, disadvantages to using GMO which up to now has only been proven to be quite minor in nature, but at the same time there are many benefits that comes with it as well. Most people will tell you how GMOs are bad and is not needed. But instead of taking that path, I will instead focus on why genetically modified organisms, although controversial, is needed in the world and why it is
In our day in age, there is a heated debate around whether GMO 's are good or bad. For all of you who are new to the issue like me, we all are seeking answers in order to make our own choices. According to health and safety executive (2014), Genetic Modified Organisms are organisms, such as animals, microorganisms and plants in which their genetic material has been altered to contain segment of DNA from another organism. The newly implemented segment of DNA contains genes that determine organism’s particular function and form. As you might know, life started when domestication of animals became our source of food for survival. As we evolved, there was a shift to a society based on agriculture. The breeders started to take specific traits of interest from plants and transfer it to another plant in a process known as true breeding. Now in this technological era, we can directly alter the genetic sequence of a species in an efficient way that reduces time and money. GMO 's have swept our industry and made the impossible become a possibility. For example, according to health and science executive (2014), insulin, blood factors and growth hormones used to be obtained from cows and humans that carried there own risks of transferring diseases. But now, we can use GMO 's to generate food and medicine in a way that is safe and valuable. GMO 's are a big part of our society, from eating rice, corn, and tomatoes to vaccinations and medications.
Our world wants the best of everything especially if it means to play around and mix genes. Science today has mixed many genes from an organism to another one. This process is known as GMO’s. In other words, genetically modified organisms are either plants and animals that are experimented on to level them up. Yet, scientists are too blinded by the fact that GMOs are causing problems to our society. Genetically modified organisms are not beneficial to modern society because they are causing health issues, allergies, and are messing with an organism’s life.
GMO’s are becoming an increasingly large topic in many places including the US. But first we need to understand what a GMO is, they stand for genetically modified organism, it can be any kind of organism but in this instant we are talking about GMO’s in our food supply. They weren’t discovered all at once it was more of a chain of discoveries that lead them to say “hey let’s use this to enhance our food.” The way it started was Andrei Nikolaevitch Belozersky a russian scientist isolated DNA. Then in 1973 Professor Herbert Boyer had the thought about man-made DNA and then in 1980 the first GMO patent is issued. There are many different reasons GMO’s are used a big one is for fighting against pests that eat crops. Instead of spraying a pesticide
This paper examines the latest evidence on whether genetically modified foods have been proven safe for consumption. Also explored are how people might benefit from genetically modified crops and whether or not food products made from Genetically Modified (GM) crops should be labeled. Another important topic is whether Genetically Modified crops could reduce world hunger. Finally, the effects of environmental effects of planting Genetically Modified crops will be examined.
The crazy thing is GMOs haven’t been around for that long, they were introduced in 1996. This may be the reason for a lack of knowledge on how GMOs can affect us in the long run. However, we are already noticing that there have been increased allergic reactions, antibiotic resistant bacteria, and other toxic hazards in those recent years (Smith, Safe Food). That may not seem like a lot right now, but that’s only the start of it. More children are having life-threatening allergies, which can be contributed to increased GMO intake. Already 37 people have died from side effects of GMOs, 1,500 partially paralyzed and 5,000 were temporarily handicapped by chemicals used in harvesting GMOs (Smith, “Genetic Roulette” 258). These numbers do not include the number of children that have been born with birth defects associated with the chemical, glyphosate. This chemical alone can cause infertility, stillbirths, miscarriages, and cancers (The Ecologist). Researchers found that glyphosate “caused malformations in frog and chicken embryos that were like human birth defects found in GM soy-producing areas. In particular, the researchers found malformations of the head and cyclopia (where a single eye is present in the center of the forehead)” (The Ecologist). Seeing that GMO’s have only been deemed “safe” for human consumption for a little over 20 years there are no long term evidence or studies that show it is no hurting us. Not to mention how inhumane genetic modification repercussions can be to animals. Take one look at the Documentary Food Inc. the images shown are horrific and immediately make you rethink your choices food wise. The chickens are being injected with genetically modifying serums. Those serums make chicks grow twice as large, twice as fast (Food inc.). Yeah, that may sound great for the corporation, however, those chicken’s bodies are not built for that.
