Gun Control Violence

According to a report by the Switzerland-based Small Arms Survey, the United States has about 35-50 percent of the world’s civilian-owned guns and has less than 5 percent of the world’s population. With no restriction and so much freedom, firearms can be distributed throughout the United States illegally and obtained as easy as buying it from a person, disregarding all gun laws. Implementing stricter background checks can help reduce the amount of crime relating to gun violence. It can also keep firearms away from those who shouldn’t have possession of them.

Although the laws of gun control are more and more strict, the rate of gun violence and gun crime in the United State are not going down. Many people think gun control is not the answer for gun violence. For example, the tragedy at Virginia Tech may tell us something about how a young man could be driven to commit terrible actions, but it does not teach us very much about gun control. So

Then in 1968 President Lyndon B. Johnson passed two gun-control acts; Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 and the Gun Control Act of 1968

Another thing these acts did was raise the age to purchase a handgun to 21. Also, the acts made it so gun dealers had to make detailed recordings of who purchased the guns. So far in history we can see the development of gun control, we can see that gun laws change from anyone can have a gun to I need the sane, safe, and responsible people can have a gun. To this point in history, there has been no school shooting.

The United States is one of the few countries were the right to bear arms is protected by the constitution. Unfortunately, it is also one of the most violent with incidents involving guns this year reaching an estimated 36,212 and an approximate 9,050 deaths (“Gun Violence Archive”). There are an estimated 310 million firearms in households across American, these are only estimates because current gun laws do not require them to be registered or tracked. A more staggering estimate is that most of the guns owned by private citizens are semi-automatic guns, the same type of gun used in almost all mass shootings. While these privately owned guns are legally purchased, many times, they land in the hands of criminals, and owners never report them stolen. Mass shootings and gun crimes are not the only issues with gun violence the one never talked about is suicide, more guns available equals more suicides. The United States is one of the easiest countries to own a gun legally or illegally, stricter gun control laws are necessary.

In 2015, 13,367 people lost their lives due to gun violence according to Gun Violence Archive. The Archive also states that out of that number, 693 were children from ages 0-11. We can all agree that there is indeed a problem that we have to address. The solution to that problem, however, has been debated by many. I believe the solution to this problem exists in three parts: Mandatory training and licensing along with more heavily secure gun storage, stricter regulations on the purchasing of a firearm—disabilities and criminal records should be more deeply looked into before transaction—and finally, equipping teachers at highs schools with the right kind of weaponry to prevent mass shootings.

Gun control should be enforced because it will help reduce crime rate. Alex Yablon states “The Stanford team found precisely the opposite: ‘Ten years after the adoption of RTC laws,’ they write, ‘violent crime is estimated to be 13-15 percent higher than it would have been without the RTC law”(Yablon). This proves that gun laws are way too lenient and need to be enforced more because the RTC law made it easier for people to get their hands on firearms which was supposed to decrease the crime rate but as stated in the evidence it instead had the opposite effect. So gun laws would have a beneficial impact, reducing the crime rate. Douglas Weil discusses “We know that well-tailored gun laws work. The Brady Law is working to prevent easy access to handguns by criminals. Since the law was first implemented, eighty-five felons a day have been denied access to a handgun that they tried to purchase from licensed gun dealers. Virginia 's law limiting handgun purchases to one gun a month has had an enormous impact on gun trafficking patterns along the east coast”(Weil). This shows that the Brady Law is help enforcing gun control by preventing easy access to guns which is reducing crimes such as felonies. Through these mass shootings and various other methods of gun violence, tens of thousands of people die every year. These gun-related deaths primarily originate from murder and children accidentally shooting themselves. Although those in favor of gun control tend to believe that guns should be terminated completely, the second amendment prevents lawmakers from being able to do so. It is now uncommon for a young adult to get a car as a gift ; they get the perfect gift, a Carbine rifle. Some states regulate that teenagers are allowed and able to own or possess a gun. Firearms were not all menacing as they are now. They evolved as crime became worse. Because of how dangerous the firearm itself has become, regulations were put in place. However, the current laws are not enough. It is safe to say that individuals are the reason why fully automatic firearms are now banned, because the problem is the people, holding the guns. Furthermore, the government should implement more gun control laws. The United States needs gun reforms because tragic events, such as accidental deaths, homicides, mass murders, and suicides could be prevented by implementing tougher punishments on negligent gun owners.

In order to reduce mass shootings, and unnecessary deaths, background checks must be preformed on potential gun owners. Although background checks are already an implemented from of gun control, many states do not conduct background checks at all. Other states conduct only the most minor background check. This is a very serious problem, “In states that require background checks for all handgun sales 47% fewer women are shot to death by their intimate partners, there are 47% fewer firearm suicides, and 53% fewer law enforcement officers are shot to death by handguns. Simply put, background checks save lives.”

In Chicago when turning on the news on a Friday night there is this special called Weekly Death Toll. Normally, every state has this program. However special Chicago news channels such as WGN- TV, ABC7 Chicago, and CBS Chicago, take the death toll to a whole new level. On a weekly basis, there are at least twelve-gun homicides and after averaging that up that settled to seven hundred and sixty-two murdered in Chicago yearly. However, those are only murders that is not counting the four thousand three hundred and thirty-one shootings in Chicago. Makes one think, “How are these murderers getting guns?”, or “Why are they even allowed to have a gun? What are the police doing?”. Although most gun lobbyist of the United States have argued that the current gun control laws are fixing the growing gun violence, closer examination reveals that a longer waiting period for gun ownership and higher taxes on bullets can properly restore the faith in American humanity by decreasing our appalling gun violence.
