Gun Control Violence

The two articles that I have read were “Connecticut School Shooting ‘An Attack on America’” by Ted Anthony and “The Price of Gun Control by Dan Baum. All around I believe these articles were both very interesting and both took different perspectives on the issues of guns in America. Both Anthony and Baum illustrated the different problems that we have in America and our communities with gun control and gun violence. But, they both brought the text together to relate it on a personal level. I enjoyed reading both texts and connecting to each one on a different level.

The United States is home to approximately 5% of the world’s population and 31% of all mass shootings. Through these mass shootings and various other methods of gun violence, tens of thousands of people die every year. These gun-related deaths primarily originate from murder and children accidentally shooting themselves. Although those in favor of gun control tend to believe that guns should be terminated completely, the second amendment prevents lawmakers from being able to do so. Therefore, in order to combat these causes, alternative gun control solutions must be made for each one. Gun-related murders can be decreased through the use of universal background checks. Many laws, regulations, and government programs directly impact the issue of gun control as well. The Federal Government is in charge of the gun control laws and pass the majority of them. However, sometimes the laws they create do not succeed as they expect them to. For example, gun buy-back programs were created to reduce the number of firearms owned by civilians and to provide a process where people can sell firearms without the risk of prosecution. Phillips et al. stated, “Cities in the USA continue to use the programme in response to high-profile incidents, such as the shooting in Newtown, CT, despite a lack of evidence that the programme will succeed in reducing violent crime”(249). As firearm ownership and firearm manufacturing have been increasing over the past twenty years, gun murders have been decreasing (“Gun Rhetoric” 2). Although, many mass shootings have taken place over the past twenty years and have inflamed the gun control debate. The major problem with enacting more gun control laws is most mass shootings have happened with illegally obtained guns.

A lot of firearm shooting in the public cases happened for the court to reform the law. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords got shot in the head by a gunman in grocery store parking lot in Arizona. “The gunman killed six people, including a nine-year-old girl” (Opposing viewpoints….). There was a school shooting in Newton, Connecticut on December 14, 2002. A gunman, about twenty years old. Entered the school’s main entrance and shot five people including teachers and students. After that he went into a classroom and shot twenty first graders and six teachers before he killed himself. After this case, President Barack Obama tried to change the gun control laws to prevent innocent people from getting killed by firearms. “Obama’s act did not pass the Senate. But many supporters continue the fight to change gun control laws to prevent murders in the United States” (Opposing viewpoints….). The background check system needs to be fixed by creating a stricter system to keep firearms away from dangerous people. Although the laws of gun control are more and more strict, the rate of gun violence and gun crime in the United State are not going down. Many people think gun control is not the answer for gun violence. For example, the tragedy at Virginia Tech may tell us something about how a young man could be driven to commit terrible actions, but it does not teach us very much about gun control. So

Next, we have the gun laws of 1968, “ President Lyndon B. Johnson renews the fight for gun control. He wins passage of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 and the Gun Control Act of 1968.” these laws in Acts prevented persons who were convicted felons, drug user, and mentally ill from buying any type of firearm. Another thing these acts did was raise the age to purchase a handgun to 21. Also, the acts made it so gun dealers had to make detailed recordings of who purchased the guns. So far in history we can see the development of gun control, we can see that gun laws change from anyone can have a gun to I need the sane, safe, and responsible people can have a gun. To this point in history, there has been no school shooting.

In 2015, 13,367 people lost their lives due to gun violence according to Gun Violence Archive. The Archive also states that out of that number, 693 were children from ages 0-11. We can all agree that there is indeed a problem that we have to address. The solution to that problem, however, has been debated by many. I believe the solution to this problem exists in three parts: Mandatory training and licensing along with more heavily secure gun storage, stricter regulations on the purchasing of a firearm—disabilities and criminal records should be more deeply looked into before transaction—and finally, equipping teachers at highs schools with the right kind of weaponry to prevent mass shootings.

Kennedy was assassinated; it raised public awareness to the lack of control on sales and also possession of guns in America. Gun control should be enforced because it will help reduce crime rate. Alex Yablon states “The Stanford team found precisely the opposite: ‘Ten years after the adoption of RTC laws,’ they write, ‘violent crime is estimated to be 13-15 percent higher than it would have been without the RTC law”(Yablon). This proves that gun laws are way too lenient and need to be enforced more because the RTC law made it easier for people to get their hands on firearms which was supposed to decrease the crime rate but as stated in the evidence it instead had the opposite effect. So gun laws would have a beneficial impact, reducing the crime rate. Douglas Weil discusses “We know that well-tailored gun laws work. The Brady Law is working to prevent easy access to handguns by criminals. Since the law was first implemented, eighty-five felons a day have been denied access to a handgun that they tried to purchase from licensed gun dealers. Virginia 's law limiting handgun purchases to one gun a month has had an enormous impact on gun trafficking patterns along the east coast”(Weil). This shows that the Brady Law is help enforcing gun control by preventing easy access to guns which is reducing crimes such as felonies. It also proves how gun laws were not strict enough because after the Brady law was put into action, a great amount of people trying purchase handguns were not legible to do so and before this law,

It is now uncommon for a young adult to get a car as a gift ; they get the perfect gift, a Carbine rifle. Some states regulate that teenagers are allowed and able to own or possess a gun. Firearms were not all menacing as they are now. They evolved as crime became worse. Because of how dangerous the firearm itself has become, regulations were put in place. However, the current laws are not enough. It is safe to say that individuals are the reason why fully automatic firearms are now banned, because the problem is the people, holding the guns. Furthermore, the government should implement more gun control laws. The United States needs gun reforms because tragic events, such as accidental deaths, homicides, mass murders, and suicides could be prevented by implementing tougher punishments on negligent gun owners.
