What would you do if you were convicted of a crime you did not commit? On January 13, 1999 a young high school senior, Hae Min Lee went missing after school. She was confirmed dead by 2:36 PM, 21 minutes after school had been let out. Six weeks after the incident they arrested her ex boyfriend, Adnan Syed for her murder. Adnan claims he is innocent but everyone is struggling to believe him. In the podcast Serial, by Sarah Koenig, Adnan is innocent because Adnan’s alibi checks out, he had no real motive, and jays testimony is flawed. Adnan does have a solid alibi that is able to prove his innocence. On January 13, 1999 the day of Hae Min Lee’s murder, a student at Woodlawn High School, Asia McClain had said that she was with Adnan in …show more content…
Sarah Koenig had interviewed a friend of Adnan’s, Saad Chaudry, to get information about Adnan’s reaction to the breakup. Saad explains the way Adnan reacted “ And I was like, “Adnan's dating multiple girls!” I was like “I can tell you some of the girls that he's dating.” I was like “he is not upset about him and Hae breaking up.””. When Saad reveals what he had said about how Adnan felt and how he reacted it is easy to tell that Adnan clearly was not hurt at all because he was already talking to other girls. Saad explains how Adnan was already seeing a girl who was from philly. Considering Adnan was a player and dated multiple girls, it does not seem like he was motivated enough to murder Hae. Adnan explains what it was like when him and Hae broke up “Each time that we broke up or each time-- let me just say this, each time that she ended the relationship or took a break, it was never a thing where I was like pestering her or, like, going to her house and knocking on the door or chasing her down”. Every time Hae thought it was good for them to take a break or breakup Adnan never really cared because he didn’t go around and beg her back all the time. He just moved on and kept being the player he was. Although, Adnan and Hae still remained friends and she would always talk about this guy she met named Don and she would tell him that she really liked Don. When Jay is describing Adnan’s reaction to the
Physical evidence was extremely lacking, and all DNA tests conducted were clear of Syed’s DNA. Therefore, it is more than likely that Syed is innocent. The evidence, or lack thereof, presented in the case of Adnan Syed v. State of Maryland proves that Adnan Syed is not guilty of the murder of Hae Min Lee.
One piece of evidence that supports this theory is the fact that Jay had Adnan’s phone. During the timeframe of the murder a number of calls were made from Adnan’s phone to different people. All these calls made were only to people that Jay knew himself. Jay was in possession of Adnan’s phone before, during and after the 21 minutes in which Hae was murdered. These calls were all in the area of the murder clearly shown by the cell phone tower map. Phone records show calls to and from Jen, one of Jays best friends from high school, who Adnan had only met once or twice whilst with Jay. It doesn’t add up that Adnan would call Jen more than once, before and after the murder if he didn’t know her.
Adnan Syed was a golden boy to people; he was smart and loved by everyone. He never thought he’d be convicted of his ex-girlfriend’s murder, neither did anyone else. In fact, when he first received a call from the cops regarding Hae’s disappearance he brushed it off, more scared at that fact that he was high on marijuana and talking to a police officer. He thought Hae had just ran off to California, just like everyone else. However, when they found her body in a park notorious for being a body dump his whole world turned upside down. Soon after this a friend of his, Jay, confessed to the police into helping Adnan with Hae’s murder which then put Adnan behind bars. However, was Jay’s testimony true? Unfortunately Adnan’s case has many flaws and lies to it, and the true answer still remains; is Adnan Syed actually innocent or guilty all along?
A lot of people wonder if Adnan Syed is guilty or innocent, today as a legal assistant I'm going to tell you one important reason why he is innocent. Adnan is not guilty because there is another potential suspect like Jay. Jay's story that "proves" Adnan's guilt, has changed every interview and testimony. Jay had intimate knowledge of the crime he knew things, like if he knew every single thing that Adnan was thinking about which makes everything looked suspicious. Also Jay's stories don't quite match Adnan's cell records.
There has been a lot of speculation and internal conflict as to who committed Hae’s murder. At some points, I thought that surely Adnan had done it. However at other points, there was no way that he had killed her. Based on the lack of physical evidence against him, I do not believe that Adnan committed the murder.
I believe that Adnan killed Hea with an aim of revenging after the break up. Adnan seems to have killed her to ensure that she had felt the pain that he had. I arrived at this conclusion because after they broke up, the phone call details that Adnan was bitter after Hea
A slight time after the arrest, Asia composed and sent a few letters to Adnan. These letters revealed that Asia claimed to see Adnan in the library on January 13th. However, a short period later she declared that “She’d only written it because she was getting pressure from the family” (Koenig, “The Alibi”). Adnan was again left without an alibi because it is clear that Asia did not see him in the library that specific day. Hae was just a typical teenager before she was murdered, meaning she had a diary. The diary was “entered into evidence at the trial”, so Sarah Koenig had the opportunity to grasp a copy(Koenig, “The Breakup”). Several of the entries were complaints about Adnan. The couple seemed to posses many issues. Hae mentions that Adnan constantly reminds her that she “is against his religion.” He even goes the distance to call her “a devil a few times”(Koenig, “The Breakup”). Messages Hae left behind in her diary prove that Adnan had a rational for murdering her. Every student is guilty of passing notes in the course of their school years. Adnan and Aisha were no different. They decided to have a conversation where “they were joking, making fun of Hae, making fun of themselves” (Koenig, “The Case Against Adnan Syed”). Upon reviewing the note, the words “I’m going to kill” were found on top of the page in Adnan’s handwriting. Aisha doesn’t recall those frightening words being written during the original time of the note. She stated that while reading the note at the trial, it was her first time seeing that part. Adnan obviously made plans to murder Hae Min Lee on his own because the note was found while searching his house (Koenig, “The Case Against Adnan Syed”). Because of the written proof of tension between Hae and Adnan, there was obvious frustration, which was a motive for Adnan Syed to commit the
“Yes, and all my folks told me at the time you couldn’t do no less than marry me after-” (83). Zeena is controlling Ethan through guilt, but knows that he is unlikely to do anything about it anyway. “She’s a paper that’s hung on to us all after her father’d done his best to ruin us” (86). The suffering those people had endured from Zeena was not over, but Ethan wasn’t helping that much, since he was just letting it happen. “You can’t go Matt!
"He was sending her love letters and cute notes and professing his love for her," says source.
To begin, Adnan had a terrible lawyer. One year after Adnan’s trial, his attorney Cristina Gutierrez was disbarred, and $282,000 dollars were awarded to past clients she’d wronged with her shoddy legal skills. Not only did Gutierrez never challenge the state’s sketchy phone records, she never even contacted Asia McClain, a potential alibi witness for Adnan. Later, Gutierrez’s associate William Kanwisher signed an affidavit stating that she didn’t necessarily make a “strategic decision not to interview and/or call as a witness Asia McClain”. In other words, someone who knew Gutierrez extremely well at the time is admitting that she didn’t have a master plan formulated, she simply forgot about a potentially essential part of her client’s defense.
Ethan is getting less careful of showing his feelings towards Mattie. He is willing to do a maid’s work, and this is especially unnatural in the time period that the story took place. Zeena noticed this anomaly in Ethan. She even gave him a ‘look,’ and this conflict could stir up some trouble in the future. Zeena is holding her feelings in while “turning away silently,’’ which makes it appear that Ethan is upsetting her. Once Ethan advances to more than just kind gestures and thoughts of love, his and Mattie’s affair will drive Zeena away.
What would you do if a convicted criminal’s guilt was being questioned? Would you have the urge to let your inner detective shine? If you are one of those people, the perplexity of this murder would be right up your alley. On January 13, 1999, in Baltimore, Maryland, 18-year old high school senior Hae Min Lee mysteriously disappeared after school, leaving her family and friends worried. Weeks later, on February 9, 1999, the innocent young woman’s body was found buried in Leakin Park. Many people, including the whole state of Maryland, pointed fingers at Adnan Syed. Syed comes from a traditional Muslim family, yet he did “American teen-like” things, such as dating and going to
Can I remember something that happened six weeks ago from today? Nope, I’m sure do not remember what I did, but I can only guess what I did on that day. In the first episode, the serial shows the amount of knowledge and evidence that has shown by Sarah Koenig’s questioning and collecting information from different people convoluted in the murder case of Hae Min Lee. The three main characters were Rabia, Jay, and Asia in this episode that Sarah Koenig talked to in the first episode of Serial. These three people who are a lawyer, witnesses and being involved in the case of Hae Min Lee’s Death could be the answers of if Adnan killed Hae Min Lee, his ex-girlfriend or not part of the murder
“Please treat me and even Marinette normally. I’m very excited to have my first high school experience at a real school, and to share it with a girl who’s amazing.” Marinette was not oblivious to some of the girl's heated glares at her. Was Adrien trying to get her killed by his insane fan club?
Meaning he told her that he was not interested in her
