Applied behavior analysis (ABA) can be applied to different settings, which may range from helping individuals with phobias to training a dog to sit. ABA is the process of scientifically applying interventions to complex or basic situations (Baer, Wolf, & Risley, 1968). ABA is founded on the values of learning theory in order to develop and comprehend specific target behaviors (Baer, Wolf, & Risley, 1968). Such work emphasizes the understanding of behavior. ABA aligns itself with natural sciences as opposed to the social sciences. ABA places its concentrations on observable behavior and its relationship to the environment (Baer, Wolf, & Risley, 1968). Disconnect: Researcher and Clinician
In ABA there are various stages in which application are taught and applied. For example, there is a transition from researcher to clinician. Such efforts to connect the two groups in an effective manner has been limited when it regards understanding the bridging between the two and applying research to see if such communication has been effective.

Within the field of ABA, practitioners and applied researchers put in effort to identify the many stimulations that are responsible for behavior change in the most simplest and effective manner (Reed, 2008). One salient aspect of behavioral research is the ability for researchers to have parsimony in their models when they are in the process of understanding behavior change (Reed, 2008). According to Reed (2008) and Iwata (1991), within the progression of experimentation, effort is put in to establishing successful outcomes when applying basic experimental research to real live settings.
Yet, within experimental research settings it may have too many constraints that are beyond a non-experimental applications. Reed (2008) points out that in a classroom environment there could be various confounds reinforcing the target behavior. In such environments understanding the associations between treatments outcomes becomes difficult to decipher (Reed, 2008; Iwata, 1991). Development of an intervention is the final step in the functional behavior assessment (FBA) process. In the completion of the FBA antecedent and reinforcing contingencies are identified which can be manipulated to prevent the behavior from occurring, remove reinforcement for engaging in the undesired behavior, or be utilized to reinforce alternate behaviors (Cooper, Heron, & Heward, 2007). My goals to complete the Graduate Certificate in Applied Behavior Analysis are both, personal and professional. On a professional level, I want to advance my graduate studies by becoming a certified Behavior Analyst. For this I must complete the courses required by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board. On a personal level, this certificate means several things: providing an example of improvement for my family, and providing my family with the adequate financial resources in the furure. I have been the first in my family to obtain a university degree. Being certified as a behavioral analyst would make me a specialist in this field. It is my hope that the completion of my professional career stimulates other family members to aspire higher educational goals and become productive professional citizens in society.

In order to improve their condition, ABA specialists focus on a system of reward, which encourages positive actions like speech, social activity and life skill improvements. This works mostly with children as they are more likely to absorb and accept new challenges; this is commonly referred to as "positive reinforcement" in the literature and has become one of the leading directions for treatment. Applied behavior analysis previously known as behavior modification is the application of behavior that modifies human behavior, especially as part of a learning or treatment process. Applied behaviour analysis can be defined as an approach that is based on scientific understanding aimed at bringing change to human behaviour. Problems involving behavioural changes affect people from a wide range of groups including individuals with autism spectrum, disabilities, dementia care, individuals in rehabilitation from brain injuries and childhood behavioural disorders. In this career there are some functions that will be ultimate for an analyst. For instance, I will be involved in conducting assessments based on behavioural changes to come up with answers to various patients’ challenges.
The publication “An Implicit Technology of Generalization” shined a spot light on generalization as an active process that needs to be studied by behavior analyst in order to help validate behavior programs. The study exhibits not only the immediate effects of our procedures but the lasting change that could be achieved in multiple environments of a client’s life. Since Skinner’s time there has been much research done and many new techniques made in ABA especially in regards of teaching people how to increase behaviors associated with learning and decreasing those that may inhibit learning. These new techniques have been used to help successfully treat or improve the lives of several people with various degrees and types of disabilities and learning disorders. These techniques have been adapted from being used exclusively on adults and modified for children. These techniques can be formally initiated, meaning that they are done in a classroom or a behavioral analysts’ office, or they can be taught to parents or caretakers and are often used to develop skills such as learning theory of mind, eye contact, social skills, and other necessary skills (Renna, 2004).
My initial thoughts towards behavioral research did not encompass a complete understanding of its significance. Thus, there was a feeling of ambiguity towards its relevance, especially in the scope of everyday life. However, after reading Chapters 1 and 2 of Methods in Behavioral Research, the necessity for behavioral research became more defined. Specifically, the findings accumulated through research can be applied in various aspects of life, such as aiding mental health professionals in patient care decisions, developing educational programs, and influencing Supreme Court decisions (Cozby & Bates, 2012).
They were able to control the curricula and everything about the entire learning experience along with conducting small scale complimentary experiments to better understand why the effects observed were happening. The hope was to determine which key skills children should acquire to prepare them for later success. Applied Behavior Analysis analysts are required to know the steps that are needed and necessary for behavior modification. This type of modification requires a clear definition of the behavior needing modification (target behavior), how this will benefit the individual in need of the modification, a clear plan of modification, and consistent data gathering to determine the effectiveness of the proposed behavior modification plan. In order to achieve a successful modification plan, the ABA professional first needs to gather information about the individual either by direct or indirect means. The modification must always been in the best interest of the individual, or those closest to the individual, and it must be a functional modification that can be carried out in the absence of the analyst. The ABA professional needs to understand the needs of each client. In order to do this, the professional will have to assess the behavior, gather data, identify a target behavior, propose a hypothesis about an intervention, implement the modification program, gather more data about the effectiveness of the program, and report about the outcome.
