Managers and leaders are frequently used terms and they are interchangeably. However, it is not necessary for them to be the same; they do have quite discrete meanings. In norm there are managers who are excellent leader and leaders who also an excellent manager’s. Healthcare organization requires great amount of employees with highly professional and operational employees as well. It is crucial to identify the managers and leaders because of necessitate for both of them (Buchbinder & Shanks, 2012).
Managers and leaders do have similarities but at the same time they also have important differences. In healthcare organizations managers and leaders strive hard to change employees’ attitudes from an ‘agrarian or craft-tradition’ mindset to high performance organization mindset. A manager is a person who is responsible for carrying out the managements functions such as planning, organizing, leading and controlling. One of the key functions is leadership, managers are leaders. Managers do carry out their leadership responsibilities to communicate, motivate, inspire and encourage employees towards high performance. A manager becomes a manger by virtue of their position and subordinates will follow the manager because of their job description and title (Mark & Nancy, 2006).
Leaders had been described as a person directing the activities towards a shared goal. The leaders’ key role is involving group activities and coping with change. In healthcare most of the leadership was developed within a healthcare context but were usually developed for the business setting and then applied to healthcare. Researchers had provided little evidence that such leadership initiatives are associated with improvements in patients care or even the organizational outcomes.
