Sleep is a trait that the majority of all life forms on this earth share. However, there are many who are uniformed on just how important it truly is and how much it differs between each individual. There are many researchers who have spent copious amounts of time trying to determine what healthy sleeping is, allowing people who feel they might have sleep complications to check in and see whether or not they need to consult their doctor. The National Sleep Foundation wrote a paper in 2012, which defines healthy sleep as “Falling asleep within 15-20 minutes of lying down to sleep, regularly sleeping a total of seven to nine hours in a 24-hour period, sleeping continuously-not having long periods of lying awake, and waking up feeling refreshed.” …show more content…

There are three main ways in which insomnia can manifest itself. The first form is labeled as acute insomnia, and is categorized by lasting less than one month. This means that the disturbances in one’s sleep will only persist for less than the one-month period. If it continues to display longer than that time, then it is no longer acute insomnia and has become the next style. Chronic insomnia is classified as lasting for over one month, and in some cases it has the ability to consume the majority of a person’s life. The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine (JCSM) published an article in 2008, which discussed the effects that chronic insomnia has on patients who are suffering from it and the steps that they can take to get help. “By definition, patients with chronic insomnia have daytime impairment of cognition, mood, or performance that impacts on the patient and potentially on family, friends, coworkers and caretakers.” (Pg.494). Finally, there is the shortest duration, which is known as transient or temporary insomnia. With this variety, patients are only experiences the effects for 1 week or less. Additionally, the symptoms are much less serious than the other forms with the most noticeable being a difficulty to fall asleep and a decline in performance ability. Patients who are diagnosed with FFI are commonly between the ages of 30 and 60 years old. The onset of the disease is noted, at first, by an ongoing chronic like state of insomnia and often patients will experience additional mental disturbances such as panic attacks and irrational fears. In 2012, Advance Healthcare Network compiled research completed on FFI from multiple sources into a publication. In the paper, they discuss the stages patients go through with FFI. “In the second stage (which typically lasts about five months), the patient develops hallucinations, agitation, and severe sweating. The next three months are marked by significant weight loss. During the final stage, the patient develops dementia, complete insomnia, muteness, ataxia, dysarthria, dysphagia, pyrexia, and myoclonus.
