My craziest High Adventure Camp
Have you ever has hypothermia in New Mexico? Well stay tuned and you will find out how I did. You will read about all the crazy things that happened to me in Philmont in New Mexico. Now let’s begin the journey to Philmont Scout Ranch.
With the rest of my Boy Scout Troop we had decided to go to another high adventure camp, that year we had decided on Philmont. We had fundraised and earned money to be able to go pay for the train and have extra money to spend. After all, that was done, we were at the train station, I forgot my uniform which was embarrassing, but I was able to borrow one from a friend’s grandpa. We got on the first train it was a four hour ride to the next train station. After we got off that train we got some pizza thinking we had some time, but we didn’t have as much time as we thought as we were eating we heard our group being called. So we all scrambled up our stuff and hurried to get on the train. We got on the train and then we were on our last train to Philmont. After a long train ride we got off and put our stuff on a bus and stopped to get something to eat, then we got settled and slept in base camp for a night. Then after that we headed to the trail with our ranger Tanner, and that is where the craziness began.
So we hiked with Tanner for the first two days of our two week trek, we had been at the sites we needed to be and on time for the most part. Well after those two days he left and we were on our own, we had
This all started with my parent’s brilliant idea to take me to Disney World. As any 8-year-old would have reacted to such amazing news, I completely lost it. To my memory, I think I might have just turned the house upside down, literally making the clean family room into a war zone. And of course, I had to brag to all my friends at school of this amazing trip I had the opportunity to go on. I was so ecstatic that every night I crossed off the days left until the trip. After what had felt like an eternity, we headed to the airport to fly to Orlando.
During the summer before my Freshman year I went to hell and back, and by hell I mean Philmont scout ranch. Just a little background, Philmont scout ranch is 140,117 thousand acres of big rugged, dry, mountainous terrain. I knew what I was getting into, Ever since I joined boy scouts Philmont was regarded as the ultimate scouting experience, so of course i was pressured into that. Eventually summer rolled around and before I knew it I was on a train to New Mexico.
We were dumping tea off the boat and I saw the soldiers. Then I said run and we all were jumping into boats and running on the docks. Luckily no one was caught. They looked for us and the days went by before we could leave our
When I applied for C.R. England I was not sure that I would be accepted to go through the program. Three days later I received a phone call from a Recruiter at C.R. England and while on the phone we went over all the information before setting a time and a date for leaving for Salt Lake City, Utah. When the day came to leave for Salt Lake City, Utah my parents took me to the Greyhound terminal to prepare to leave. Thirty minutes later we boarded the bus to leave our first stop was in Missouri I stayed on the same bus and from there I went to Kansas where I had to switch buses but I had to wait one hour before the other bus got there after boarding the bus for going to the next stop I was in Colorado where I had to wait two hours and thirty minutes before boarding my next bus to Wyoming once I got to Wyoming the next bus was ready and it had no air conditioner that I remember so the last bit of traveling was so warm that everyone on it was hot even a eight month old baby everyone tried their best to help the mother out to make
It was Friday, December 19th, 2003, in Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, South Carolina. Just six short days before my 19th birthday. A recruit screams, "Lights! Lights! Lights!". The overhang lights flashes to life, I look outside and see that was still dark outside. All 80 of my fellow recruits jumped up and began the preparation for our big moment. Racks were stripped of sheets and blankets, folded, and then set on top of the footlockers. As we did the last bits of field day, I imagined that we were somewhere between well oiled machines and ants. Time seemed to slow down to a crawl. As we got dressed in our pickle suits I was shaking. To this day I don 't if I was from the sheer excitement or from nervous. The process of getting dressed was beyond tedious and deliberate. Socks, corframs, white shirt, long sleeve khaki shirt, shirt-stays attached from the bottom of the shirt to the top of the socks, tie, standing on top of a foot locker to step into our trousers, getting the help of your rackmate to help put on your blouse, and lastly putting on your cover.
We were stationed in Camp Taylor, Kentucky until the call came in that we were being shipped over to France to help hold the lines. They had lost a great number of soldiers after the battle of Verdun. The last few months it had been raining relentlessly and no one had seen the sun in days. The sun finally showed itself. We were glad. I thought that day would be the day everyone could finally get everything right “GAS! Gas! Quickly men!” I screamed at everyone in the showers. They all ran outside wearing nothing but skin and put on their gas masks. They still didn’t meet the time
One day in 7th grade at 6th block it was almost time for Eogs to begin actually they were the following monday and i was talking to natalie.Mr.Clark was talking about something that really bored me ,so talking to natalie was pretty much my only option.I really should of payed attention but you know it was almost the end of the year and no one really payed attention. He wanted us to take notes so i pulled out a bunch of paper.Everybody kept asking me for paper so i got very annoyed.
We were at Hawaii for a week, on Friday we went zip lining. We got there, but no one was there except for the workers, we got there early. My parents started to chat with the workers and a couple minutes later everyone came and we all put our gear and helmets on.
After a very long day of packing and loading things into our trailer, me, my brother, and my parents decided to hit the road and get to our campsite out in the desert. The trip was only about an hour drive and as soon as we arrived, we set up camp immediately. My dad is very dexterous and set up our fancy house tent in no time. The tent was a weird beige and orange color that had fake windows and everything, which means that it was pretty ostentatious because my family didn’t need a tent of that size. By that time it was getting dark so we just all piled our things in the tent and dozed off. In the morning, we all got breakfast and played around until about noon, when we decided to take our two ATV’s for a spin. I put on my little red
A few days on a stinky old train that rattled and rolled like it was about to just plumb lay down and die, all the good trains were being used by the military, and then a couple days of eating dust aboard a stagecoach that bounced up and down and just made my leg hurt something fierce and I wound up in a dusty bump in the road,a town called Rock Springs.
I was in a group called Beta Club. We were all at a camp called Sound To Sea. It was time for the camp fire. Fourth and fifth graders surrounded the growing fire in the pit. My friends and I were standing up on the benches screaming “You can’t ride in my little red wagon”, with everybody repeating that chant back to us. I was so excited to spend time with all my best friends. And trust me you could tell I was excited by the smile on my face. As the chants grew
Breakfast didn't have to many mosquitoes in them, and rounding up the oxen, chicken, and cows were quite easier than normal. Today is going to be a good day I thought to myself. We were all traveling behind the leader, when he stopped at this bubbling pool of water. He screamed, We're here! I had no clue what here was but I just followed what everyone else was doing. They said we could wash our clothes here and clean up everything, so I did. It was very warm water, and I thought it was boiling but it was just from ancient volcanic activity. All of our clothes were washed and I was right about the good day I was going to have. For some reason I wasn't sore or tired when I woke up, so that led me to believe that I was going to have a good day. We left Soda Spring around lunch time and our next stop was Fort Hall. I heard Fort Hall you can trade things for hats and other types of clothing. When we get there I'm going to buy a hat to keep the sun out of my eyes. I heard you can also buy other things like repair kits and that stuff. We reached Fort Hall at about 6 o'clock at night. We decided to rest for the rest of the day, because there's no point to go out for 2 hours to move on the journey. In the morning we left at 6 because we forgot to wake up, and we left Fort Hall. About a week and a half later we came upon the Three Island Crossing. Now we had to cross the snake river. Our choices were to ride a ferry along the shallow looking river, or float along the river with the wagon and making our animals swim. I talked to Mr. Swanson about this because I didn't want to try and guide my oxen and cow along the river, that just seems outrageous. I finally convinced him to make us take the ferry, because it would be a lot easier and the cost is only $20. We made it across easy with nothing bad happening, and now we are on the other side. I'm afraid one of these days I will accidentally drop
I had just finished 7th grade and was going into my last year of middle school and was getting too old for camp. I had been going to the school camps for awhile and knew that this was going to be my last year. Because next summer was going to be in high school. I was 13 turning 14 and was one of the older kids at my camp.
Spring break of my junior year, I attended a leadership camp called RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards). My dad was the president of rotary at the time so I pretty much didn’t have an option in going. I wasn’t too excited about spending my spring break at a leadership camp with weirdos I didn’t know. The camp site was up in the mountains of Ojai so we had to leave my house pretty early. My dad had to stop and pick up some kids from my school that were also going. When they got in the car, I was annoyed and tired. Everyone said hi to me and I just looked at them and put my head phones back in and went to sleep.
In 2007 me and my brother argued with our mom we didn't want too go to boy scouts. I was in 2nd grade my brother hunter was in 4th grade. Mom wanted us to do something productive instead of just watching TV all the time. We sort’ve agreed to going yet i felt anxious about it. Couple days later hunter and i packed our equipment and stuff. We hopped in the car as my mom was excited for us to go. One early afternoon we arrived there I felt a bit of nervousness and uncertainty. We grouped around the teacher including the other scouts. He introduced himself and explained the activities and stuff we were going do. Soon after, We tied knots, played soccer and explored around the place. Later on, Hunter and i set up the tent for the night at a
