Hope is something that takes many forms and is described differently and that is seen in these two very different poems. The first poem is "Hope is the thing with feathers" by Emily Dickinson which is has hope symbolized by a bird. The second poem is "Hope is a tattered flag" by Carl Sandburg why shows how the flag is the spirit of the United States. In both of these poems hope is shown through something that isn't seen but is in away felt. In both of these poems they both have either the bird of the flag symbolizing hope preserving. In the Poem Hope is the thing with feathers, the author wrote "that perches in the soul/ And the sweetest-in the Gale-- is heard/ And sore must be the storm" (2,5-6) Here the author shows how a heard through the hard times and brings hope. It also means that hope is planted in the soul never to be moved. In the second poem Hope is a tattered flag it says "Hope is a heartspun word, the rainbow, the shadblow in white/ And the hands of strong men groping for handholds" (1, 19). Here the author shows that the flag symbolizes the spirt of the people giving them hope of a tomorrow. It also shows that the enduring hope that people had even during times like the Great Depression.Even though these poems use different symbolism they both carry the …show more content…
In the poem it says "that perches in the soul" (2). No bird can perch on the soul so this shows that the bird is not a a physical bird but a imaginary bird. Also from the quote we can see that hope is always with us. In the sentence our soul is like a branch and the bird is hope. "And sweetest—in the Gale—is heard" (5). In that quote when it talks about the sweetest-is heard, it is referring to the birds song of hope. When it talks about the gale it is referring to the storms that we experience. In this poem in talks about how hope having the qualities of a bird that can't be
What is hope? I think hope is a feeling of wanting something to happen. According to Lisel Mueller, written in 1976, her poem “Hope” is about how hope could be found everywhere and is part of everything, even in the roughest situations. I think the theme of this poem is that hope is present, even if it is extremely hard to find. Mueller uses many metaphors to describe hope as if it were something else.
Hope is a very powerful thing and the way you handle it can affect you in different ways. Everyone sees and feels hope differently but it is overall a beautiful thing. Throughout the novel Copper Sun by Sharon M. Draper, Amari tends to lose hope very often from herself and others but mostly regains it. The novel Copper Sun has a very similar theme to the poem, “Hope is the thing with feathers” because it captures the thought of losing all hope but being able to regain it and never letting go of it just like Copper Sun portrays. Amari is a hopeless soul when she is reminded that her life is not well, she has lost all contact of Besa, her family is all dead, and through her struggle to freedom.
Hope alone is a life-changing emotion or feeling, it alone can decide someone's fate in a life or death situation in which they have s main say in what happens. For example, in the book we read the Odyssey, there are multiple areas where hopes play a pretty big factor in the story. The Odyssey is a story where a man named Ulysses had to go to war for ten years and had a rough ten-year journey to get back home to his wife, son, family, and friends. He never gave up his hope that he would see his family again and that is the main thing in this essay is to never give up hope.
Carl Sandburg wrote many poems, but this is a simpler text than he is use to writing. “Hope Is a Tattered Flag” was written in 1936, when America was coming out of the Great Depression. The poem gave several people hope and inspiration!
The second stanza of the poem explores the concept of communication, as many methods are stated. For example, “birds to carry messages/taped to their feet/there are letters to be written.” (25-27). This gives the reader the images of trying to desperately communicate with someone. Birds are seen as a sign of freedom and this gives a sense of being able to communicate freely.
“Hope is the thing with feathers” describes birds and their songs as the ultimate source of hope, imperturbable in the face of adversity. “[S]ore must be the storm / That could abash the little Bird”, meaning it can withstand any situation of any difficulty level (“Hope” 6-7). For the speaker, “[they’ve] heard [the bird] in the chillest land… / Yet, never, in Extremity / It asked a crumb - of [them]” (“Hope” 8, 10-11).
In contrast, instead of showing hope is important with a theme, the poem Hope koIs The Thing With Feathers explains to us what hope is and and how it can keep you pulling in the toughest fights in your life. In the poem, the author
Sandburg refers to hope all throughout the poem. When he says “Hope is a tattered flag and a dream of time” (1), he is referring to the variety of life that he appreciates so much even after all that has happened (Knight). He is showing the reader and all Americans that we should not lose faith or hope. America has suffered and endured a lot of hard times recently, but as Sandburg shows in his poem “Hope is a Tattered Flag,” good times are just around the corner. Nature will balance out the bad with good as it is “guaranteed by the laws of the universe.”
Dickinson uses the word hope to be portrayed as a symbol to be free, and that its supposed to be found within yourself. It expresses that that the pain is represented to be a storm, that kills the bird within it bringing tranquility. Some literary devices found in the text are, for example, “The bird singing that never stops,” is an example metaphor because it symbolizes the hope. Throughout the text Dickinson uses hints of difficult vocabulary that requires you to look it up to understand the meaning of the word in the context its being used in. Imagery in this text is used to show that when all odds are against you, and things get rough the storm is the symbol to showcase
Compare of these two poem, they both bring out the same thesis, the hope of freedom. In Caged bird, caged bird cannot fly and walk freely because his wings are clipped and feet are tied. So the bird choose sign to bring out that he desired for freedom. However, he still feel afraid, fear of unknown. The poet wanted to told someone lost their freedom of speech and opportunity climbing up in the society. In Sympathy, “ I know
In the first two lines, the speaker introduces a metaphorical description of hope. The speaker says, “Hope is the thing with feathers-/that perches in the soul-”(1-2). This personification of hope conveys a mood of hopefulness and optimism. Because hope is described as a bird, it shows how delicate and free one’s hopes are. This bird “sings the tune without words-/And never stops-at all-,” says the speaker in the third and fourth lines.
The bird is symobilizing hope, freedom and joy. The interpretation I received from the author was if one gives up on their dreams they would no longer be happy, fulfilled or feel accomplished. In the second stanza, the author states, "Life is a barren field frozen with snow, "Which
Dickinson and Whitman also use similar poetic devices in "Hope is a Thing with Feathers” and “O Captain! My Captain!” Each poem contains an extended metaphor. In Dickinson’s poem, a bird clearly symbolizes hope. The first stanza introduces the bird metaphor: ‘Hope is the thing with feathers--/That perches in the soul.’ The next lines ‘And sings the tune without the words--/And never stops—at all—’ illustrate the interminable nature of the bird and hope. The second stanza expands the metaphor by saying ‘And sweetest—in the Gale—is heard—.’ The bird’s song, or hope, is the sweetest during a Gale, or troubled times. The first lines in the final stanza ‘I’ve heard it in the chillest land--/ And on the strangest Sea’ describe the bird, or hope, as being
In “Hope is the thing with feathers” the author characterizes hope as being caring and always being there when it's needed, which helps develop the theme of hope and perseverance. The following line, “And never stops at all”, helps characterize the bird in the poem as persevering. This piece of evidence shows that hope will always be there which characterization of caring. The line “That perches in soul”, gives the characterization of perseverance. This line is portraying the idea of hope always being with you, hence the line perching within you, or in your soul. The line “And sour must be the storm that could abash the little bird” characterizes hope as persevering. The line illustrates the bird as always being there even when times are tough. Even when one might think that there is no hope, hope will always be there. The quote “Yet never in extremity it asked a crumb-of me” characterize hope as being giving. The line shows how hope will never ask for anything in return and instead gives without expecting anything in return.
She uses a number of literary devices in the poem. One primary example of the figurative language that she uses is a the personifications do symbolism of hope. A symbol is an image that represents an abstraction. For example, a red rose may represent love, or a stone may represent hardheartedness. In “’Hope Is The Thing With Feathers,” the poet assigns hope the symbol of a ‘thing with feathers,’ more specifically a bird. Even though that, by the end of the poem, readers can definitely conclude that Dickinson used a metaphor by saying ‘hope is a bird,’ she does not make that clear until the very end. The metaphor began as only a “partial one: a ‘thing with feathers’ is not yet a bird, but some sort of object, not easily envisioned and defined only by the fact that it is feathered, that is, winged, capable of flight. It is a transient human experience, one that ‘perches’ in the soul but does not live there. It ‘sings the tune without the words,’ that is, a song in which rational, lexical meaning plays no role, while melody is all. Finally it ‘never stops at all’” (Leiter). The symbolism of saying that hope is a bird assists the reader in having a better understanding of how the virtue of human desire exists in side one’s soul, and is always singing – always alive – even when times get drastic. A bird is used to represent hope since “birds are often viewed as free and self-reliant, or as symbols of spirituality” (Rose and Ruby). The feathered fowl in this poem is “courageous and persevering, for it continues to share its song under even the most difficult conditions” (Rose and Ruby). Providing imagery of a bird also helps one to form connections as to what hope would act like if it were personified as said
