Mission and Vision of the Institute
Janelia Farm Research Campus (JFRC) is a research campus of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) opened in October 2006. The campus is located in Loudoun County, Virginia, near the town of Ashburn. For years, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute has employed scientists at host institutions across the United States so they can pursue basic research (Janelia.org). This prototype has worked well to accelerate new lines of discoveries. The need for JFRC is due in part, to force collaborative science; which can be counter to the discipline. As scientific research evolves as do opportunities to further innovation. In 1999, Cech, Rubin, and other HHMI leaders knew that some of science’s most deep-seated inquiries were best pursued in a collaborative environment – and collaboration connecting different science disciplines --- paramount. They felt a shortage of scientists engaged in building new tools required for researchers to make progress in many research areas, as well as a shortage of places for scientists could continue to do, rather than simply manage, experimental work. They set out to build the campus that would become Janelia. Dr. Gerald Rubin, an internationally recognized geneticist, took planning responsibility in 2002, becoming the Institute’s first director.

The volunteer activity is career coaching for emerging scientist and researchers. There was 18 total hours, provided in two-hour increments. During my tour to the organization’s main office in Rockville, Maryland, there was a mini briefing on the organization’s history by the Chief Administrative Officer. I was invited to tour the corporate office in Rockville, Maryland by the Human Resources Business
I believe that The Helix Summer Science Institute is not solely an enriching academic experience, but also a social engagement opportunity. I believe that I would make an excellent student at the Helix Summer Science Institute 2016 because, by enhancing my understanding of the practical and theoretical aspects of science, I would be able to integrate this knowledge into my life. This academically rigorous program presents me with the opportunity to acquire methodical, logical and practical skills that are applicable to the real world. I am a very studious, motivated and passionate student, who perseveres in the face of adversity, while always respecting my peers. I embrace diversity, and believe that success is achieved through collaboration. I have a passion for science and public outreach, and I believe that these interests are connected.
The article uses informational quotes from respected individuals, like the dean of the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences and principal investigator of STEM BUILD at UMBC, which gives the opinion of the individuals who have more experience in the field than the actual author of the article.
Working at the Orlando Science Center has introduced ideas and taught me more than I could have wished for a few months ago. I am interning in the Early Childhood Development program. This program used to be associated with Public Programing, but recently has expanded so much so that it has become its own division. The science center is a non-profit organization so it is quite interesting learning how the company works internally to produce a professional and distinctive science center. Even in this short span of time, I believe the science center has helped primarily develop my interpersonal and problem solving skills.
Following college, I moved to Portland, Oregon and looked for ways to continue developing my skills and fostering my passion for social responsibility. I started at Impact NW as an AmeriCorps member, where I served two terms helping run the AKA Science program. In my role, I managed hundreds of volunteers, wrote curriculum, and trained instructors; but above all, I learned how to work with corporate partners. Aided by corporate volunteers, our program served thousands of students each year. I quickly realized the importance of establishing meaningful, long-term relationships. Companies gave back to our community and in return we provided them a chance to hold an engaging experience for their employees. Every committed corporate team we cultivated helped us build capacity and redirect vital resources back into our program. We also encouraged volunteers to share their skills and as a result they would provide us with amazing insights. For example, one group of volunteers from Nike world headquarters helped streamline our processes by sharing ideas from their work in lean manufacturing. These experiences sparked something for me and I realized that my strengths as a creative thinker and a leader and my passion for giving back unite.
Stanford Hospitals and Clinics (SHC) is a world renowned academic health system that is comprised of 386 primary and specialty care clinics and the 476 bed Stanford Hospital (US News & World, 2015). The hospital and most clinics are situated in Stanford, California or the surrounding cities. The mission of SHC is “to care, to educate, and to discover for the benefit of patients and the larger community” (Denend, Mendelson & Zenios, 2010). They exemplify this mission by being nationally ranked in 13 adult specialties, including: #9 in ear, nose, and throat; #10 in cancer; #13 in diabetes; and #18 in cardiology (US News and World Report, 2015). Their excellent across multiple disciplines has helped SHC gain worldwide recognition for
Over the past two years (2014-2016) I have participated in the National Junior Honors Society. As a member, I commit to completing community service and to learning among my peers in order to develop into a superior leader. I have taken part in activities such as fundraisers, team building activities, and several forms of community services such as working in a soup kitchen, daycares and organizing social events. Recently, I volunteered for a week as a vendor at a temple in Tacoma, raising money for the establishment during the Cambodian New Year festival.
After doing my research on JFK medical center, they are a part of a non-profit organization who is known for the purpose of educating the public, patients, media and policy makers promoting greater understanding and awareness of clinical research and the role it plays in public
Currently, the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center utilizes a poorly implemented and poorly designed incentive program. The current inventive program rewards the majority of employees solely based on a yearly evaluation. The terms of the evaluation are set by human resources employees including the criteria for what constitutes an adequate performance level. Ideally, this evaluation rating system should be developed by individual supervisors so that departmental and unit goals can be effectively achieved. After all, the purpose of an organization exists to reach the organizations goals (Nassar, 2007). There are some general incentives that appear to be effective incentives for acute care nurses. These general incentives include providing adequate
I have recorded 161 service learning hours from volunteering at the Swedish Covenant Hospital, the Chicago Public Library, the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, and
I knew my transition from an ordinary visitor to a volunteer would be a new and exciting experience. My task in the Summer Reading Program was to register patrons, explain how the program works, and give out prizes at the end of each week. The number of children who registered for the program impressed me. I enjoyed working with these children, since I knew exactly where they got their excitement from. I would look forward to seeing the smiling faces of the children as they received their prizes. Their faces made me reminisce about the joyful moments I had as a child when I couldn't wait for the grand prize week of the Summer Reading Program.
When deciding on a place for my science trip, I knew the perfect place would be the Liberty Science Center, located in Jersey City, New Jersey. I went there often as a child, so I already knew that there was a great deal to learn there. What I didn?t realize was how much it had been updated since I was there last. There are so many advances going on in science and technology, it?s all so amazing. What surprised me most, is that even at age 19, I still had as much fun there as I did when I was 9.
Along with this, he volunteers at a local hospital in the city, helping to improve the Calgary community. Science and biology have been an integral part of his entire life and have served as a source of inspiration. Over this past year, iGEM has provided him with the chance to further explore the field of synthetic biology along with connecting him with like minded people and peers.
For the volunteering assignment, I chose two volunteering events: the “Norcal Community College Counselor Breakfast” and the “CSUEB Education Summit.” Both of these events are being held on the California State East Bay Campus. They are both classified as special events, and they are both hosted by the Prospective Student Services Department. Although each of these events has a specific focus, they are both directly related to addressing the needs of prospective CSUEB students.
Spending my summer at the Student Science Training Program (SSTP) at The University of Florida, I worked with under Dr. Fanucci to continue the research done by Yale University on RNA riboswitches. Although the focus of the study was so small that the task seemed almost
