Humanistic Perspective:
Introduction:
This essay discusses how the humanistic psychological perspective is reflected in Andy Andrews Common Reader, The Noticer. 2009. This psychological approach focuses on the positive aspects of what it means to be ‘human’ in a holistic and contextual manner. The humanistic approach adopts a subjective view of people and endorses the ides of self-uniqueness, free will, positive growth and fulfillment. Andrew uses facts, fiction and allegory to communicate Jones’ perspective and observations on history, destiny, love, crises, wisdom, life’s purpose, relationships and so forth. Jones, or the Noticer for that matter, observes the small things that other people do not usually notice. On pp 66-75; Jones converses with Caroline, Amelia and Ritchie on love and relationships and “how to keep a marriage from ending in divorce.” Jones, the ‘wise’ old man engages the young students in an intense and intelligent discussion in which he shares his wisdom/perspective on right and wrong, good and evil, discerning future consequences of present action and how this relates to marriage. During this discussion Jones defines wisdom to the students as “the ability to see into the future the consequences of your choices in the present.”73. As such, he advises the students that commitment in marriage “is a whole heck of a lot easier if you’ve made a wise choice to begin with,” - in choosing a life partner.65. Humanistic psychology recognizes the transformation of the modern society and some of its most pressing social issues including the “disintegration of the capacity to love in modern consumerist society.”2For instance on page 68-9, Jones gives the example of a young couple whose ‘relationship’ was the most important thing in their lives that they make compromises that end up tearing apart their marriage when the physical attractions fades away and other things are more important. As such, it is fair to argue that Andrews applies modernist humanist approach in this case as according to Jones advice, the focus is on the individuals and the choices we make in regards to a stimulant environment, such as a marriage in the 21st
