Upon the first session with a new client, it is detrimental to go through certain expectations regarding confidentiality and privacy. According to the American Counseling Association, “at initiation and throughout the counseling process, counselors must inform clients of the limitations of confidentiality and seek to identify situations in which confidentiality must be breached” (ACA Code of Ethics, 2014). By disclosing expectations and policies held within the institution, allows the client to
The AASECT ethical code that I can relate to the most is competence and integrity. Competence and integrity relates to a counselor’s responsibility for the consequences of their acts, by commission or omission, and making reasonable efforts for provision of all professional services in an adequate and appropriate manner (Long, Burnett, & Thomas, 2006). As human sexuality counselors, I believe that it is critical for us to maintain client’s confidentiality by ensuring the information obtained from clients is used for counseling purposes only and is kept private and confidential. This can only be done through competent practice and maintenance of professional integrity.

When it comes to counselors and psychologists, there's a code of ethics that influences whether they can reveal private information during a session. Patients also have the added protection provided by HIPAA. During the first visit to a new counselor, the person will be provided with papers that explain that your sessions are private except in certain circumstances. The HIPAA guidelines are actually the minimum level provided. In many states, there are stricter guidelines in place for those in the mental health fields. Patients have to feel safe during their sessions, or they won't share details with their counselor.
This paper begins with a general idea of self-disclosure by therapists and the importance of keeping the client’s needs first. It covers many aspects of self-disclosure including ethically what to look for in the motives of using self-disclosure with a client. There are other aspects of self-disclosure which include transference and countertransference which are issues which need to be attended to immediately for the therapist to remain objective and not react to a client. Therapists must be cautious in disclosing information and make sure it is relevant to treatment. Beneficence and nonmaleficence are important things to consider when self-disclosing and the therapist must be educated, well trained, and have experience before considering self-disclosure. Also included in this paper are different orientations in relation to self-disclosure. Those orientations include Adlerian therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, feminist therapy, and relational therapy. Although these are only a few orientations,

The reading entitled “The Treatment Plan” focuses on developing treatment plans, particularly for those in substance abuse rehabilitation programs. First, the interdisciplinary team, which consists of a variety of professionals such as doctors, nurses, and therapists, writes a summary of the client at intake to determine the problems, how they came about, and the potential solutions. Next, a problem list is created. The problem statement is one sentence explaining the problem, which is abstract and not tangible. Therefore, signs and symptoms are also listed underneath, such as history of DUI and the blood alcohol level. These are used as evidence to back-up the problem statement. After, for each problem statement, several goals are listed that
The practice that assist a therapist in determining a client diagnosis and the proper treatment plan that would resolve the issue surrounding the clinet’s diagnosis is Case Conceptualization and Treatment Planning. The clinet’s treatment plan must be appropriate and relational and this will alow any type of medication and adaptions to be adjusted if needed so that modifications and adaptations can be adjusted as needed (Altman, Briggs, Frankel, Gensler, and Pantone, 2002). The ultimate goal of case conceptualization and treatment planning is to discover complete findings in relation to the client. One approach is Existential Therapy. The human
Breaking confidentiality is a serious ethical component in counseling and must be considered very carefully before doing so. Each state has laws regarding the disclosure of confidentiality whether it to the courts, the clients, relatives, lawyers, schools, or other unbiased parties (Corey et al., 2015). It is very important that the therapist is aware of the laws in regards to disclosure of confidentiality in the state in which they practice to ensure that they are practicing in an ethical manner and to avoid any legal
In the third and fourth part of the video the issues that arise at the beginnings and endings of treatment is discussed. A few questions that answer are, “When and how does the professional relationship actually begin? When and how can it end? What should you be aware of ethically and legally at the start and finish of treatment?” The first part is to understand how to terminate therapy in a proper way. It’s important to focus on how treatment is terminated and not the why it’s terminated. It’s important to make sure that if appropriateness of termination is every question that a clinician keep good records that show you handle termination issue, did proper referrals, treatment records were made available and finally follow-up consultations was offered. It’s also discussed the importance of understanding HIPAA and your state laws when it comes to client records. It was also made important that you have professional will that in event of your death that you should not leave your clients abandon. The professional will needs to name a professional executor and the expectation you have for him or
In this essay I am going to look at the importance and purpose of the initial consultation between the client and the therapist and what happens during this preliminary session. Residential treatment (RT), which is currently recommended, actually places the substance abuser in a facility where care staff and experts who oversee their treatment monitor them. For Levi, this is a combination of medication, psychotherapy, physical activities, social activities, and counseling. The target is to support, guide, and monitor the client in completing this treatment plan, wherein the target is for the client to be rid of said addiction through the course of the plan. The continuum of care for addictive and compulsive behavior will be an important element in the plan. Additionally, the plan will take consideration of the particulars of the client to fit the plan to the client 's needs, situation, and personality. Wenzel, Brown and Beck (2009) suggest that "in the first session of counseling with suicidal patients, the following strategies should be used: (1) discuss structure and process of treatment, (2) emphasize compliance by the
Ethical issues in a counseling practice lay the foundation of a therapist in practice. Ethics are at the center of how the counseling process functions and operates in a successful manner for the clients who seek help in such a setting. In order for the counseling profession to be ethical and hold professional recognition, there are many facets that need to be examined and outlined to make sure all counselors and practitioners are functioning at the highest level and withholding their duties required by the counseling profession. The first introduction so to speak of the area of ethics also happens to be one of the first steps in counseling, which is the informed consent. The informed consent provides the basis of what happens or will be
