I Want to Be Part of the Future
I believe that education is the hope of the future, and as an educator I will be an important part of that future. Behind every president, doctor, lawyer, and parent there was a teacher. I believe that all children can learn and should be provided with the opportunity to do so. Education should be equal and without prejudice. Education should be provided to all children in accordance with their ability. Education should foster each child’s feelings of community, success, and self-esteem. The more our students know and understand about each of these areas, the better able they will be to make valid decisions and judgments concerning their personal well-being and community and world prosperity. This is an example of Theodore Brameld’s philosophy of education that is best known as the founder of Social Reconstructionism.
Next, I believe in parts of the Essentialism philosophy. I believe that all students should be provided with the same opportunities in education, but modified to meet the individual needs of each student. I feel that as an educator, I need to encourage individuality and creativity in each student. I believe that each child is naturally curious and creative, and it is my job to nurture the creativity and direct the curiosity to enhance learning. I believe that each child has a certain capacity for learning, and it is my responsibility to recognize that capacity in each student and teach on a level to which each child is able to understand and grasp what is being taught. I believe that children learn at different speeds and in different ways, and it is my responsibility to consider these differences and provide each child with continuous and progressive emotional and mental growth.

My strongest belief is that education is the foundation for success. Knowledge opens so many doors and opportunities that would not exist without it. The American education system should be no exception to the notion that we live in the “Land of Opportunity,” and each child should have the opportunity to receive a quality education equivalent to their peers regardless of who or where they come from. Through the ED 105 course at Clemson University, the readings from that course, and my field experience working with middle school students I have solidified my views toward the field of education and established personal goals for the type of educator I would like to become in the future.
An educational philosophy is a personal statement of a teacher’s goals or belief. A teacher comes to the classroom with a distinctive set of principles and ideals that affect how a student learns and expand the child’s potential in his or her venture into knowledge. I believe that all students should be given the opportunity to excel to their greatest possible potential. I also feel that there is no one hundred percent correct philosophy on education. However I do agree with many of the ideas of the six primary philosophical views. The child as and individual is the basis of my teaching philosophy. I believe that with motivation and guidance, children of all backgrounds can harbor success in the educational world and receive the skills they need to have a successful and prosperous life. It is a teacher’s duty to encourage lifelong learning, consider individual learning styles and aptitudes, and self-reflect on how to improve. Education entails individual human development in the cognitive, emotional, creative and social areas. All children are entitled to a free education regardless of race, cultural background or handicaps. For education to be an effective part of the students life, the student and teacher must be actively and enthusiastically involved in learning. A teacher needs to be well prepared and organized. They need to know the perspective goals for each student and ways to achieve these goals. Teachers need to work with students to help them grow and develop ways to use their knowledge.
Education is a very important part of society. I feel that it should teach children how to function in a society, and learn the basics they will need to expand on for the rest of their life. I feel that it is used to teach moral, and ethical standards of living. The schools are used to help the children learn to function in life, and achieve the goals of their choosing. Education is important because without it I firmly believe that society would be a very savage institution. With the things that we teach in today’s schools we give the power to know the basics such as reading, writing, and math but we also give them the ability to function in a society. As a teacher I hope to set my student of fire. I want to see them come alive with a desire to want everything that is out there for them. Ever since I was a little girl, I knew that in my future I wanted to become a teacher. I always looked up to my teachers, especially the ones I had in elementary school. I even played 'school' with my friends and pretended I had my own classroom. I loved being in charge. During a summer, I was given the opportunity to work as an Energy Express mentor and work with a group of eight children. This was one of the most wonderful experiences I have ever been through. I was a mentor to help guide the children, and by the end of the summer I felt as if I had really accomplished something. I am planning to pursue a career in elementary education. First, essentialism focuses in teaching through core courses, using the essentials of knowledge and development. Essentialism is a traditional teacher-centered philosophy. It emphasizes the great importance of transferring knowledge from the older being to the younger generation. The teacher is the expert on the subject, and students listen and learn what is being taught. The teacher is also the role model to his or her students. School is the institution students come to learn.
I believe that education extends far beyond the classroom walls, and involves many more people than students and teachers. People should be learning wherever they go, and should continue learning long after they’ve graduated from high school or college. Education isn’t something that can be quantified with tests or report cards, but is instead something that people carry with them. It’s a survival pack for life, and some people are better equipped in certain areas than in others. People with a solid education are prepared for nearly anything, as they will be able to provide for their own physical, emotional, and aesthetic needs.
