Ever since the legalization of abortion in 1973, the conservatives and the liberals have been in a feud for many years, even decades. I however, believe that the topic and the actions and consequences of abortion are quite iniquitous. If you have performed an abortion, or even desire to have an abortion, I will not victimize you for it, and I will respect your decisions as to you being an individual. Abortion in my eyes shows that it is killing life, both in the mother’s point of view and killing the life of an unborn child who is still going through the embryonic stages. Abortion rights are one of the most heatedly debates in society. There are many arguments for and against abortion. Each woman has the right to an abortion and the right to have a child. Women have the resources, rights, and respect to make reproductive health decisions that are best for themselves. (“Women’s”) We live in a free country and women should continue to have the choice to do whatever with their body, concerning women’s rights, health issues, and religious reasons.

In the modern world, most of the countries have democratic government, which means that decisions are made by the people, who rule and govern the state. However, there is not a single state that practices perfect democracy due to different reasons. Governments are too big, which makes it very complex for every citizen to have a voice in decisions. Or, governments are claimed to be democratic, but in practice they can be close to authoritarian or even totalitarian regimes where one person has a power to make and enforce laws. Political power is not allocated evenly among all members of society, so, in this or that way, governments tend to fall in the hands of the few, whom we can call the elite or the power elite.

Abortion has been one of the hottest topics concerning women’s health care and reproductive rights. Tune into any presidential debate and you’ll notice candidates spending as much time discussing the topic as immigration, foreign policy, climate change, and gun control. There are a lot of misconceptions about the pro-choice movement but it can be explained in very simple terms. Being pro-choice does not mean pro-abortion, it simply means accepting that women have the choice to choose what they do with their bodies, not the government or anyone else. I believe strongly in this issue and believe that we should look at our past and not go back to a time where women did not have the same rights as men over their bodies. We are trying to become equal, not return to an era of submission. No man or government should have the power to control a women’s body; every person has a right to his/her own body. Abortion should be kept an easy, accessible, safe, and legal option for all women regardless of beliefs. We should be taking strides forward toward equality, not steps back. In the mid-twentieth century, second wave feminists saw major struggles of women and sought to radically improve and change the security of women and reproductive rights. We have fought hard for many of the rights we have today, but everyday we are challenged by those who want to oppose and erase our efforts.

There are two sides to the abortion argument. Some say that the entire concept is immoral, while others argue that ethically there is nothing wrong with abortion. Mary Meehan, the author of “Why Liberals Should Defend the Unborn,” believes that abortion is immoral; she argues that the liberals willing to allow abortion will not make a stance on when a life of the fetus actually begins. Then, she backs up her argument with scientific evidence and points out that race has an effect of abortion. She also brings up that abortion can lead to discrimination against children with disabilities; after all, if a mother finds out her child is disabled and would rather not deal with it, she can simply abort the child. Amy Borovoy, the author of “Beyond Choice: A New Framework for Abortion?”, does not think abortion is immoral. She argues that women have the right to choose whether they want to terminate their pregnancy or not. In regards to the responsibility of delivering a baby, Borovoy backs up her argument by examining Japanese culture. The person that defends her argument better is Mary Meehan because she argues that liberals are unsure of their ethical stance, and pro-choice advocates discriminate the unborn but are for civil rights.
