With the assertion that glycemic control is a primary concern in diabetes management every provider should consider Imogene King's Theory of Goal Attainment as a base in patient-client interaction. As a name of that theory indicates, this approach emphasizes the way for a patient to achieve the target through interactions of a personal, interpersonal and social system. Therefore, let me define each system first starting with a personal system which revolves around the concept of perception, self, growth, development, body image, space and time. Furthermore, this system explains how the individual absorbs and processes information necessary to understand self and others ( Shanta & Connelly, 2017). On the other hand, the interpersonal system "concentrates on interaction, communication, transaction, role and stress" (Shanta & Connelly, 2017, p. 175) reflecting patient-client exchange through verbal and non-verbal communication. Thus, the last interacting system is the social one involving a group of people who share common goals, interests, and values bound by concepts of organization, authority, power, status, decision making, control. Subsequently, theorist King established The Goal Attainment Theory based on elements derived from a personal and interpersonal system where the essence lies in a patient-client relationship through which the goals are set and achieved ("Goal Attainment Theory," n.d.).
