In recent years, Airbnb has become one the most popular brand in the world. It offers the out-of-town visitor an authentically local experience. According to Goodwin (2015), Airbnb owns no real estate but is the world’s largest accommodation provider. It has also changed hotel design or redefined hospitality. Moreover, several big brands of the hotel such as Hilton, Marriot, Accor have been threatened directly to benefits from the rapid development of Airbnb. For the reader to have a better understanding of the topic, this essay will introduce to Airbnb, the services it offers, and my position on Airbnb’s effect on the commodification of hospitality. Secondly, the article will explore how Airbnb delivers or facilitates authentic experiences …show more content…
380). In hospitality’s today, commodification is frequent everywhere. Airbnb has changed how hospitality is commodified. It is transforming hospitality into a commodity. When you book a room or entire house, a cooking class or a restaurant on Airbnb, you are participating in commodification. Instead of looking for teammates or selling a full house, you can lease all or part of your home to travellers via Airbnb to increase income. Besides, tourists book a unique experience through Airbnb. For example, there is an experience called ‘First Responder 9/11 Memorial Visit’. When you book this experience, you will listen to a story of the fateful day that changed America and heroes. 9/11 – the dark day of the United States is commodified. In the one hand, these above will provide authentic experiences, reinforcement of cultural practices, reinvestment into the culture. In the other hand, the problem with commodification by Airbnb is that it introduces false culture into an indigenous one, loss of stable, resident population. However, we cannot deny that Airbnb has redefined
Hosts will also share their experiences. The company also has an “Experiences” initiative. Hosts offer their homes to guests in exchange for money. Visitors will document their experience online.
Trask is able to use logos to prove how tourism has affected the Hawaiian culture. Trask refers to Hawaii as a “She” who “Rubs off” on the visitor with her magical presence. The beauty of Hawaii is used as an escape from “Rawness and violence” for most Americans though, Trask mentions that the land has a “Western sexual sickness” (Trask 1993). “Of course, all this hype is necessary to hide the truth about tourism, the awful exploitative truth that the industry is the major cause of environmental degradation, low wages, land dispossession, and the highest cost of living in the United States” (Trask 1993). Trask says that the areas of Hawaii which were “sacred” to the Hawaiian’s have now been turned into top of the line hotels. The beaches that were once full of fishermen and their nets are used for recreational activities like surfing getting a tan and jet skiing. On most of the beaches owned by resorts, the beaches are reserved for hotel residences only. In the essay, Trask gives the readers logos as to how tourism is changing the land. For example, thirty years ago the ratio of Hawaiians outnumbered the tourist 2:1. Today,
Tourism is one of the most international industries. Globalisation is the gradual forging of links between groups and societies until they finally reach around the globe in several directions (Smith, D,2006). Globalization is one of the serious challenges facing managers today. It is critical to develop services that are able to satisfy a highly diverse customer base (Ueltschy et al., 2007) Now to keep up with the rising levels of globalization in the hotel industry, there’s a need to understand not only the positive, but also the negative impacts of globalisation. I’ll also talk about the growth and rise of one of the most respected brands in the hospitality industry - the Hilton Hotels. Throughout the evolution of this famous organization, the Hilton has
Sharing economy is a new trend, which has happened with the global advent of Social Media and the peer-to-peer network. It is affecting different aspects of the Hospitality Industry. It allows people to share their belonging or services with strangers, in an online trust-rated way. “The Sharing Economy is a socio-economic ecosystem built around the sharing of human and physical resources. It includes the shared creation, production, distribution, trade and consumption of goods and services by different people and organizations” (Matofska, 2015). The two main examples of shared economy that brought huge debates to the world’s media nowadays are Uber and AirBnb. These shared economies, which allow peer-to-peer exchanges throughout technology,
Airbnb is a short-term accommodation leasing and renting company which turns residential houses into tourist marketplace. Critics believe that this company is running illegal hotels that are against the health and safety regulations. Therefore, last year Airbnb was banned in certain areas and cities.
The progression of technology and its presence in society has strongly molded the way people live their lives today, and the way they will continue to live their lives years from now. But with this advancement of science and increased order, there is a consequence that seems to be a heavy price to pay: the loss of human emotion and freewill, and the submission to organization and commands. The tourist industry is one such manufactured machine, so to speak, that influences people's views in certain aspects. One of these aspects, culture, is a main focus of post-modernist writer Bryan Turner, who believes that "tourism invents and demands empathy...makes cultures
The Club Med (A) case examines the companies core values, innovative goals in providing a complete all-inclusive resort getaway experience for their customers, and competitive advantages and disadvantages the resort company had against others. They pride themselves on being innovators and on customer satisfaction, though they did begin to fall behind in some areas due to new competitors entering their category. Some of the Club Med issues were that they didn’t seem to actively take new threats very seriously, they were heavily catered towards the French/European culture, and how they didn’t have much flexibility in terms of adjusting their services to fit consumer needs better.
Tracey Lien is a contact reporter from Los Angeles Times, in where she wrote an article titled Think you have too many roommate’s? about co-living being a lifestyle option for many young people in this era, ranging from their mid-20’s and mid-30’s. The reason why many people opt for this option is because financially, people find it hard to solvent and buy their own home in locations such as; New York and Southern California due to the major reason that they would have to spend a great percentage of their monthly income. Therefore; Airbnb has been created along with the term of co-living; in which people get to share a residency, helping each other grow as adults.

Economic Impact studies, conducted by Airbnb themselves, have attempted to show the public that Airbnb is a good thing for communities and the world. And it’s working. In a study conducted in 2012 by Airbnb, it was shown that Airbnb generated 56 million dollars in added local spending and creates approximately 430 jobs in San Francisco alone. It was also noted that nearly 56 percent of Airbnb hosts claimed that they used the added income from hosting toward their mortgage. All of this information paints a picture in people’s minds that Airbnb is helpful to local communities.
targeted those people who would recognize and appreciate quality lodging and not those who were seeking “cheap sleep”. Slum tourism is becoming an emerging trend now, especially in developing countries. In fact, it has become one of the fastest growing market in the tourism industry. One of the reasons for that is due to the expansion of slum in developing countries. Frenzel et al., (2015) argue that as the number of locations has increased in the past 20 years, so has the number of tourists participating in slum tourism. They then presented a graph on the rise of slum tourism and the estimated numbers of tourists per year. It all begins in the 90s, where South Africa and Brazil had first developed slum tourism. It then moves to North America, where Mexico was involved in around 1995. During the early 20s, the expansion of countries arrived in Asia. The number of slum tourist destinations has continued increased and has later transformed into a type of tourism. This indeed could generate income especially with developing countries that are heavily rely on tourism. As Frenzel (2013) states that slum tourism could contribute to development by creating a variety sources of income and non-material benefits. These benefits are not actually benefiting the community but acts as a form of exploitation instead. As a result, this paper argues how slum tourism is being portrayed as a form of exploitation through poverty, the ethics in participating in slum tourism and how it does not lead to economic development.
With multiple hotels cost can be quite high due to expenses such as food and upkeep of the hotels.
These days, there have been a number of hotels in various cities, towns and countries. From when I was young to now, I have visited many inns since I loved to travel to somewhere. I had any feeling and impression about hotels where I have been before I became eighteen years old. Hotels were just hotels that I needed to stay for the night. No more than that I thought. Before I went to Canada to study English in 2011, my family had a plan to travel somewhere and stay in a hotel for my farewell in Korea. After we visited many attractions, we were heading to the hotel that we made a reservation. When I saw the entrance of the hotel, I was surprised at first, and when we went inside of the hotel, I was surprised again. For two days, I was very impressed and I thought a lot in positive ways. I always had a desire to visit again and I wanted to get a hotel like that inn. It was the first time for me to know what I want to become. The trip to the hotel was totally changed my life and my dream.
