Emotional intelligence is the ability for an individual to control their own emotions, as well as the emotions of others when communicating. This is essential for leadership and leads to higher performance for all parties involved. A very good example of emotional intelligence being demonstrated is when we are at times of despair. In 2001 the World Trade Centers were struck by two commercial airlines. This was devastating not only for the surrounding area, but all of the United States, and the world. Last year the National Football League dealt with a bullying scandal relating to Jonathon Martin and Richie Incognito. When the details and instances of rookie hazing or bullying took place there was a widespread negative light spread about the situation, as well as professional environments having scrutiny in light of it. From phone calls, tabs at bars, even Martin being forced to buy jet skis for his fellow veteran teammate, the whole scandal was a huge issue. The public relations department of the Miami Dolphins and the National Football League was called to action and needed to respond. Emotional Intelligence of both the players involved, organization, and league as a whole was needed to calm the situation. First, denouncing the actions of Richie Incognito, launching a full investigation, and creating a positive response from it. They started an anti-bullying campaign.
