Once viewed as taboo, it is not uncommon in today's society to see people with tattoos. From symbolic to decorative, tattoos have infiltrated the culture and have become normalized amongst commoners. Tattoos are no longer how people remember as a kid where they stick on and last for a while, and there is a lot of thought and value that go into it yet alone the pain aspect. With that being said why would one want to get a tattoo just to be told it doesn't meet the requirement of the work field and they most cover it up? When people get new cars and decorate them or even anything that holds value to them, they embrace and boost it so that others can see what they take such pride in and embrace it as well; tattoos are the same way. In recent times, the debate has been whether tattoos are appropriate for the workplace and if so, to what extent. I feel as if tattoos should never hold any negative connotation to any desired workplace as they do not deter away from the tools and performance skills one has to offer to a company. When asking employers about how they feel about the appearance of tattoos, many will reply with adjectives such as unprofessional, unethical, and improper but what they fail to realize is that professionalism lies in the treatment of people, not the appearance of one's skin. One could decide to just be strictly professional or entirely show one’s personality. In some workplaces one needs to show clients one is always professional. Certain workplaces have dress codes and policies of what one can or cannot wear. Trying to figure out can be hard and sometimes impossible. Sally Pearman once said, “I think that there is a different perception of people with alternative looks in the workplace.” There seems to be more behind tattoos that people do not see. Some specific jobs do not allow visible body art while doing business because it can affect their company in a negative way. These discussions can range between “Why did the person decide to get a tattoo or piercing?” or “Does the employee really think they are going to qualify for the job because of those things?” According to Andrea Johnstone and Laurel Buskirk, editors of an article called “Tattoo, body piercings rules can lead to discrimination claim,” the reason why companies have policies that ban tattoos, piercings and other body modification is to maintain a dress code and other appearance requirements (29A). A person with tattoos is just as knowledgeable and capable of working as a non-tattooed person. Tattoos, whether visible or covered, do not change a person’s individual work ethic or how educated they are.
