When considering Organization Behavior, the learning styles assessment, and the TED Talk disputing the validity of individual learning styles as a real concept, there are several inherent themes evident throughout this thread. One such theme is that of self-reflection and awareness as means to understanding others better. Additionally, the themes of diversity and human behavior are explored equally. Organizational culture, structure and production are influenced and created by the individual members of any organization. Therefore, knowing your learning styles give ones an opportunity to maximize learning and highlight strengths and weaknesses. “Understanding your own learning styles and the styles of those around you will ensure that you are able to retain information and get the most out of each development opportunity” (Learning styles, 2017). Self-reflection as an assessment works to allow individuals to better understand their own actions, beliefs and preferences. As a visual learner, the assessment teaches that my style aligns best with learning by reading or seeing pictures. From a memory perspective, this assessment illustrates a heightened ability to remember things by sight, as oppose to auditory or tactile sensory. Before taking the Learning Style Inventory, I always felt I was mostly a tactile learner. I would be able to learn in a visual fashion if need be, but I would rather learn and by doing and making mistakes. After taking the Learning Style Inventory, the results definitely supported my initial thoughts. My tactile preference was 14 points higher than my auditory score, but only 2 points higher than my visual. Although I believe I will always will be a stronger tactile learner, my visual learner skills have been improving throughout my college learning experience. Plus, it’s important to note that many tactile learning situations are dependent on visual learning. This means that tactilely learning has been strengthening my visual learning skills.
Whether you believe learning styles are a myth or fact they still can help you learn the material for class. Just because you take this test online and it says that you are one hundred percent auditory learner doesn’t mean you can’t learn other ways. Learning styles can help you discover more creative ways for you to remember a topic or specific details. How Amy made a poster it helped her present her topic but also helped her learn and remember her topic. By writing it down and being creative you will remember the topic a lot better. I’m not a firm believer in learning styles but I do think that they can help. I am an auditory learner so listening helps me learn although it isn’t the only way I can learn. After taking the learning styles assessment it was found that I am a visual learner most of all followed by tactile and auditory. This meaning that I like to see what I am learning, I am able to understand things and later recall what I have seen. I honestly have to say that I do not agree with these results; I say that because after reading and just knowing how I am, I believe my best type of learning is through tactile, I have been this way since elementary school. When you are a tactile person you like to learn and pick up the information best through touching and doing things, you are very hands-on. Versus someone who is a visual learner just needs to see it or read it. Some of the characteristics a tactile person has is completely me; such as I am always doing something, I like to be hands on, when I talk I move my hands sort of like I am trying to act out what I am saying, I always have my legs going or am swaying side to side, like flashcards to study with, and am always chewing gum.
In the learning styles test, it resulted that I am a visual learner. I believe that this is true because I would rather to see a demonstration of what I am supposed to do so I can be able to do it by myself later on. It is effective for me when I am studying because I can remember what I saw as opposed to what I heard. Also, I get distracted easily therefore if a class session tends to be long and only involves discussions and talking, I tend to space out a lot. The results says that visual learners should always be sure to look at the study materials and make use of flash cards, which I tend to do all the time. People live their lives with many transitions, good or bad they provide us with experiences and knowledge. The life experiences we endure provide insight and wisdom to share with others. In life we are continuously looking for fulfilling experiences such as happiness, success, love or contentment. Reflection is a major factor in "developing self-awareness" to improve services provided to everyone around me, this is to develop my own understanding in realising the good and bad made previously. Moving forward with a better understanding, as well as rectifying the mistake whilst recognizing the good points, (Horton-Deutsch and Sherwood, 2008).
After completing the assessment, the inventory concludes that my learning style is predominantly feeling and concrete experiences. For concrete experience, my score of 43 reveals my passion to learn information that I believe is relevant for myself. Subsequently, scoring 34 for active experimentation indicates my preference for applying and testing ideas to understand a concept. Additionally, scoring 25 for reflective observation reveals how I learn concepts through observing others complete a task. Scoring 18 for abstract conceptualization indicates how my learning style does not depend on facts and figure. With all of these learning styles, my graph illustrates strong areas in mode 4 and 1, however, it is immensely low in mode 2 and 1. Overall, my results showcase that I belong in mode 4 learning. Your child/student took a “Learning Styles Inventory” last week to determine how they learn best. They discovered that they were a visual, an auditory, or a kinesthetic learner.
Most everyone has the general knowledge that critical self reflection is an important tool for self actualization. But just what is critical self reflection and how can we apply it to our lives? It is this need for knowledge that Kath Fisher addresses in her article “Critical Self-Reflection”. Throughout the article, Fisher highlights several main points, the definition of critical reflection and its distinguishing features, the difference between values, beliefs, and assumptions, and strategies and techniques on how critical reflection can be improved.
VARK Learning Styles refer to a learning theory that differentiates individuals into learning groups. This theory became well known in the 1970s. It is used in identifying individual students learning capabilities. Each learning styles depends on cognitive, emotional, environmental factors and previous experience. Educators use the different learning style in classroom activities, curriculum, and assessments. The acronym for VARK stands for the following learning style: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic/tactile. Each variable represents a distinctive preferred way of learning for an individual. Visual learners prefer the use of images, maps, and graphic organizers to access and understand new information. Auditory learners use listening, speaking such as lectures and class discussions to process data. On the other hand, some students favor the reading and writing method utilizing note taking and translating concepts. Finally, the kinesthetic or tactile style of learning depends on hands-on and the use of qualities such as gestures, body movements, and positioning in learning (Peyman et al., 2014).
My primary learning style is by visual and hands on methods since I scored the highest in those two areas. The scores in these areas were very close to each other with the visual score being an 8 and the hands on score being a 7, while my listening score being the lowest; a number 4. I believe that it is important for me to know this information about myself because it gives me insights on what my strengths, habits, and weaknesses are while at the same time, enabling me to find learning styles and strategies that are best effective for me. Without knowing this information, I could study for an endless amount of hours on a subject and still fail the exam because there is no point in learning or studying if you don’t absorb and retain the information
Personal learning styles are highly complex and unique to specific individuals. It is often difficult to pinpoint an exact learning style. Though there are different categories, we often fine tune them to our own abilities. By examining our traits and tendencies we create a clearer understanding of how we process and learn information. With careful review, I have developed a specific analysis of my learning characteristics, including an evaluation of skill levels. Based on what I have recently learned and know from experience, I have also devised a structured plan for improvement of time management and study skills.
The true purpose of self-reflection is to correct our mistaken thoughts and actions, and learn from them, thereby creating a more constructive life. Self-reflection is not just the simple act of discovering past mistakes and making up for these mistakes, like resetting a negative to zero. The ultimate objective of self-reflection is the development of a more positive self and the realization of a utopia on earth as the fulfilment of God’s will."
Reflection helps one to improve especially when they can draw lessons from the positive and negative experiences of the past. It is an active process that enables individuals to understand how historical, social, cultural, as well as personal experiences contribute to how we study or learn. In any aspect of life, reflection can be applied to help individuals focus their efforts in getting the most out of different situations, and, therefore, improving self-performance and becoming lifelong learners.
