Information Technology In The 21st Century

The 21st century has been described as the “Information Age”, a period in human history characterized by the shift in traditional industry implemented through the industrial revolution to an economy based on information computerization.

(Pernia, 2008) describes ICT as a technology used for communication that can help to create, manage and shared information. The researcher explain that the broad definition of ICT includes, computers, the internet, telephone, television, radio and audio-visual tools also further that any device and application that has been used as access, manage, integrate, evaluate, create and communicate information and knowledge is also an ICT. According to (ETS, 2002), the International Literacy Panel regards ICT as combining Information Technology (IT) and telecommunications. The panel further explains that IT is the electronic display, processing and storage of information, but not necessarily the transmission of the information. (Onunga and Shah, 2005)

“The 21st Century” we approach in an accelerated way to the new millennium, some changes are already visual and some others we don’t even imagine what they are. We all have to be prepare for those changes full of opportunities but of uncertainties as well. Many changes in technology, and communications just to mention a few. The whole environment will be very different, the big challenge will be to prepare and learn to live in this new environment due to the fact that not all of us are prepare for the big step.

Information technology is defined as shared technology resources that provide the platform for an organization's specific information system applications. IT deals with the technology involved in the systems themselves. According to our book, it consists of all the hardware and software that a company would need to use in order to achieve its business objectives. This includes not only computer machines, storage devices, and handheld mobile devices, but also software, such as the Windows or Linux operating systems, the Microsoft Office desktop productivity suite, and the many thousands of computer programs that can be found in a typical large firm.

As I write this paper, I notice how my life is entirely dependent on the internet. I am writing this paper on Google Docs, on a chromebook, while I stream music online, check facebook every ten minutes, and even pay my bills online. Internet has taken the world by storm. The internet, which celebrated its 25th century in 2014, started as an idea in 1961. However, the internet as we know it, started with the development of HTML by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990.

Information Technology is the study or use of systems (especially computers and telecommunications) for storing, retrieving, and sending information. The word Information Technology was first coined by authors Harold J. Leavitt and Thomas L. Whisler in an article for Harvard Business Review in 1958, quoting “The new technology does not yet have a single established name; we shall call it Information Technology”. Their definition consists of three categories - techniques for processing, the application of statistical and mathematical methods for decision making, and the simulation of higher order thinking through computer programs.

Second, it gave platform build with information to the business to create competitive advantage in their product and services. And lastly, new gathered information gave rise to new business and industry, which gave push to increase the economy of every country.

Information technology is the technology used to store, manipulate, distribute or create information. The type of information or data is not important to this definition. The technology is any mechanism capable of processing this data.
