Inhumane and cruel testing is performed upon untold numbers of animals, who then become routinely discarded. Given that they ever warrant legitimate results benefit to humans. What is missing? Their voice. Jeremy Bentham, a philosopher from the 1700s, stated "The question is not, Can they reason? nor, Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?" Certainly, this philosopher would be appalled if he knew that in this day in age research methods have only worsened, in the number of animals used and the way the procedures are applied. For instance, certain cosmetic companies use eye tests on rabbits which requires their eyes held open by metal clips for days while applying irritating products. For decades, people have been using animals as the go-to method for testing scientific breakthroughs, but not only is this concept outdated, it is a cruel punishment inflicted on harmless creatures. Animal cruelty is a well-known problem around the United States that is a growing issue for debate. A study has shown that less than 2% of human illnesses are found in animals and over 98% are ineffective on animals (Peta2). “The Food and Drug Administration reports that 92 out of every 100 drugs that pass animal tests fail in humans” (PETA). Not only does animal testing hurt the animals, it is a waste of time. These are just some of the reasons why animal testing is pointless and should be banned. It is time that the United States recognizes animal testing as unacceptable because of its negative effects on both humans and animals: it is inhumane for many reasons, it proves to be very expensive and costly, and it’s pointless on many accounts.
The testing of animals in the cosmetic industry is purely inhumane, due to the fact that the benefit of testing does not prove to be as useful to offset the negative impact it has on animals, or offset the value of alternatives testing. “The thinking, feeling animals who are used in experiments are treated like nothing more than disposable laboratory equipment.” The scientist testing on animals should not treat animals like they are not living, conscious beings. The amount of suffering inflicted upon animals is inessential and repugnant for the selfish purpose of humans to increase their physical appearance; it is not a necessity for people to change their appearance through cosmetics. A law should be passed to outlaw the testing being done on animals for cosmetic purposes because there are alternatives that are more effective, cheaper, and humane then testing on animals.
On the more sensitive side of the issue, animal testing has been noticeably recognized as inhuman. As an article in ProCon.org states, “…animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to…pain during experiments while be given no anesthesia for relief…” (“Animal Testing- ProCon.org”). Shannon Keith, the President of Beagle Freedom Project, shares her experience as a rescue leader. She sadly informs me, “…these animals have undergone numerous tests and have been deprived of the proper care, nourishment, environment, and basic rights.” The Beagle Freedom Project dedicates their time to rescue beagles and other animals from the inhuman and cruel living conditions (Keith). There have been arguments made by the “Understanding Animal Research”
Many animals die each year from animal cruelty. Caring for some animals can be very expensive ,abusing animals is a felony and against the law. Animal abuse or animal cruelty is unintentional animal neglect and the intentional infliction by humans of suffering or harm upon any non-human animal, regardless of whether the act is against the law. Using animals for testing is against the law,and not right.
Being away at college makes you realize all the little things that you miss. Something’s that you did not even know you liked, loved, or would even miss when you are away from home for weeks at a time. My favorite part about coming home is the second I walk through the door, I am greeted by my dog. I always thought she was the biggest pain in the butt that liked to eat my favorite pieces of clothing. But seeing how happy she is when I come home makes me grateful for her. So my love for my dog has made me realize that animal testing is wrong and cruel to animals. I will be going over some of the history of animal testing, giving examples of some of the tests that are being performed, and mentioning some of the laws and acts created. While reading through this think is this test necessary when the animals will be put through cruel procedures. This is why I think that animal testing should be reevaluated to see if it is really worthwhile.
Animal testing is a hotly debated topic among many people. It is the use of animals for research purposes, or to test various new medicines or products. The goal is to see how the animals will react before the products are used for human consumption. The problems arise with the issue of ethics and whether or not the results will actually translate to humans. Those in favor of animal testing will say that animal testing is beneficial, and that the life of a human should be prioritized before other animals. Also, testing on animals will prevent any damage to humans that would arise from human testing. Those against animal testing believe that humans and all other animals should be treated as equals. They also believe that it is inhumane to test
Jeremy Bentham, a great philosopher, once said, “The question is not, ‘can they reason?’ nor, ‘can they talk?’ but ‘can they suffer?’” In this quote, Bentham is trying to tell us that the way we use animals is inhumane and that they are more than just ‘subjects’ or ‘experiments.’ Animal testing negatively affects nature and humans because it is unreliable, too many animals die in the process of it, and the government wastes a lot of money funding for it.
Animal testing is cruel and inhumane. Every year, more than a hundred million animals- including mice, dogs, cats, rabbits, monkeys, and many more- are killed in the U.S. They are killed for laboratories in biology lessons, training, curiosity experiments, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing. Experimenting on animals is a cruel way of testing products. Alternative testing methods now exist that can replace the need for animals. Most experiments involving animals are flawed, which wastes the lives of the animals. Also, animals suffer just like humans, so it is speciesism to experiment on animals while refraining from experimenting on humans.
Animal testing is cruel and unnecessary. Many believe that the use of animal testing for products such as medicines and cosmetics is cruel and unnecessary. with advancements in modern technology there is absolutely no need for animal testing
Animal abuse is a big issue in society. Most animal cruelty is caused by humans. Almost ten million animals die from animal abuse each year just in the U.S. 60% of those animals are dogs, 18% involve cats, and 22% involve other animals. Over 250,000 animals fall victim to neglect or abandonment a year and the person responsible rarely ever gets caught or arrested for what they've done.
There is so much animal abuse/cruelty happening in the world today. There are so many types of abuse. For example, one type of abuse is neglect. Neglect is not taking care of a pet, like not feeding them or giving them water. Another type of abuse is physical abuse. Physical abuse is when someone hitting them, physically hurting them."
For many years companies have tested their products on animals. Testing on animals does hurt them. Anything from, keeping them in cages to completely killing them. Petitioners have tried to end animal cruelty, and recently the numbers have decreased dramatically. That does not mean that it has been completely cut out of the manufacturing process. There is other means of testing a product then on innocent animals that have no say in their life.
All beings, “things”, and properties of life have a sole function and reason to be in existence. Everything must have an ends to itself rather than a means to another ends (Aristotle, 617-636). Aristotle examines the idea of function and purposefulness within the ten books of Nicomachean Ethics. Finding this ends to itself is how one can achieve the ultimate happiness. Aristotle discovers that if everything has an ends to itself, man too, must have an end. What does being a “person” really mean, and who is eligible to classify themselves as a “person”? How can one distinctively be told apart from an intellectual animal? Aristotle’s pinpointing the function and purpose of man, can directly relate to Mary Midgley’s article Persons and Non-Persons. Midgley’s article speaks about the issue of animal cruelty. The case of harming a dolphin and eventually becoming self-destructing is the main focus of the article. The researcher decided to set the dolphins free into the water, creating an even more dangerous environment for a lethargic, self-destructing dolphin. Both sources focus on the idea of the defining feature of man, and questions what is it that makes us human? Society is constantly abusing the idea of human superiority. Although humans have a distinctive feature, what gives one the right to be cruel to the other beings of the world, no matter what their function or their purpose in the world is? One must be careful not to abuse their power. One must use their practical and
A lot of philosophers consider sentience to be the key to understanding the ethical status of animals.
In a world where one hundred fifty billion animals are killed yearly, the same question of these animal’s rights are debated relentlessly. Whether for religion or moral values, activists banded together to form anti-cruelty groups to stop these murders. As time passed, groups emerged and started to campaign against animal testing for research. With the goal of abolishing these tests in mind, orginizations looked to the public in order to convince legislatures to abolish using animals in biomedical labs. Thus, activists exercised their rights given by the first amendment; Using the press, assembly, and freedom to gain support and help the movement go viral.
