Orientation to My Internship at the Bibb County Sherriff Department
I am honored to the opportunity to internship at the Bibb County Sheriff Department supervised by Cindy Gresham, the executive assistant of this agencies. Historically, there were two agencies ensuring public safety in Bibb County, The Bibb County Sheriff Department and the Macon Police Department. There were five attempts to consolidate the two agencies, but consolidation was unsuccessful. However in 2003, the two agencies were consolidated into one unified government formally known as the “The Bibb County Sheriff Department.” This consolidations prompted a complete reconstruction of the unified agencies. There were new policies and rankings implemented and the creation of a newly organized board. This paper will explain the mission of the agency, the types of services provided, sources of revenue, the administration and organization structure, and community resources utilized.
Mission and Purpose of the Bibb County Sheriff Department
The mission of the Bibb County Sheriff Department is visible through the actions of the department under the leadership of Sheriff David Davis. Similar to Sir Robert Peel and the Bobbies, the mission of the Bibb County Sheriff Department is to maintain order and ensure public safety through formal social control. This year the department launched a new initiative known as “PRIDE” implemented by Sheriff Davis. PRIDE is an acronym that represents presence, reaction,
There is no doubt that being in the profession of corrections is an exceedingly stressful and dangerous profession. Corrections officers are one of the highest rated for non-fatal on-the-job injuries, which usually result from confrontations with inmates. These confrontations are anything from riots, fights, and even having excrement being throw at them by inmates. When being confronted with these challenges on a daily basis, fraternity and brotherhood are crucial. It is vital for your fellow corrections officer to “have your 6”. Being a corrections officer is more than guarding inmates, it is protecting your fellow officers and protecting the inmates from themselves, even though at times the inmates wish harm upon you. We all must remember, corrections officers are cops without guns and a lot more criminals. To civilians, that it a nightmare that we could never imagine. It is of the utmost importance that the PSCOA operate as a “fraternal organization,” because it is impossible to trust and depend on one another. The ultimate goal for each officer is to maintain order and to get home every night in one piece.
Not only will there be shifts in Sheriffs that are elected and Mayors that are elected, there will also be economy shifts that will happen. It will be important to the Sheriff’s office to cover the economic and market needs of the department. The ever changing economy can present challenges in the

The current chief law enforcement in charge is Sheriff David Gee, who elected into office in 2004. After he had been elected to his position, subsequently, in “2007, he was awarded “Sheriff of the Year” by the National Crisis Intervention Team. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is a place I walked afterschool to meet my mom or dad growing up, and where I have sat at wee hours of the morning waiting for my dad to finish a report so we could get back in his patrol car and cruise around on a ride along night. It is still a place where I am stopped and asked about plans for my future, and where I smile as people comment on how tall I have gotten. Here is where the parents of my peers, and my dad work together to protect us and strangers, while us ‘cop kids’ are at school. This is where my dad works during most holidays, and where he comes from in uniform, to games, birthdays, and even church on occasion. All my life I have been around and in the Sheriff’s Office, and it means a lot to
The Los Angeles County Sheriff 's Department is tasked with providing health care services to all incarcerated prisoners within a jail system which at present exceeds 18,500 inmates. Correctional Treatment Center (CTC) provides care and treatment for inmates requiring inpatient medical and or psychiatric care in this 196-bed rated medical unit located in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in downtown Los Angeles. The inmate population is in poor health, largely due to the lifestyle choices of the inmates which often include substance abuse, violence, and living on the streets of Los Angeles. They require the same basic medical care that all residents of Los Angeles County require, including routine illness to advanced medical issues such as tuberculosis (TB), AIDS/HIV+, heart disease, diabetes, dialysis, paraplegics, and acute mental health problems. Additionally, problems associated with aging are becoming common as the jail population increasingly includes older inmates. In the wake of chronic overcrowding in the county lockups, the Sheriff 's Department has been struggling to provide adequate care for thousands of inmates, many of whom have never been treated, with illnesses ranging from tuberculosis to AIDS to schizophrenia. Reported rates of tuberculosis in jails and prisons are more than six times higher than those for the general population. Jails and prisons concentrate individuals at high risk for TB or noncompliance with therapy, including those who are

United States Law Enforcement officers are constantly under pressure. Their job requires them to serve and protect mankind, under any circumstances, at all times. Because of this, officers run the risk of putting themselves in harmful situation. This may include apprehending a violent assailant, or entering harmful locations. In this study, I used books and articles such as, Criminal Justice Today, to get an understanding of the dangers Law Enforcement Officer face in the line of duty. When performing task outside the prescient, office4rs are put into dangerous situations because of their surroundings, offender’s actions, and officer mistakes. Due to the high stress of this job, it not only affects their performance, but their health as well.
In this day and age society is evolving in many different and unique ways. One major way is through our technology, which is improving every day. The new advancements can help make communicating easier, education smoother, and our country a safer place to live. This summer The Dallas Texas police force used a new and equipped robot to kill a criminal who refused to surrender. This has caused a very controversial subject in our country. The people who think it is morally wrong. Then there are people who think it is a great way to help and keep our low enforcement safer. I agree that it will help. Using a robot, it is safer, more efficient, and more American.
I chose to explore the Abington, Hatboro and Whitpain townships police departments’ websites for this assignment. Each department included on their website where they were located and how they could be contacted. They also included some frequently asked questions and general information about the department and how to go about reporting crime or paying tickets. Abington and Whitpain both included a “mission statement” while I was unable to find one for Hatboro. The one feature I liked about the Hatboro website is that although there wasn’t very much information, it did give the exact number of working officers and how they broke down into specific roles.
When formed by legislation in 1935, the Colorado State Patrol was created to “…promote safety, protect human life and preserve the highways of this state by the courteous and strict enforcement of the laws and regulations of this state relating to highways and the traffic on such highways” (CRS 24-33.5-201). Originally named the “Courtesy Patrol,” over the last 76 years the Colorado State Patrol has evolved into a comprehensive and complex law enforcement agency, without forgetting its original mission. Through the dedication to its members, both past and present, distinguished professional standards, and industry-leading technical competence, the Colorado State Patrol has stayed true to its traditions while taking on changing law
Police brutality in the U.S. has been a phenomenon that has caught international attention in the last few years. As defined in thelawdictionary.org, police brutality is “the use of excessive and/or unnecessary force by police when dealing with civilians.” In many cases, civilians that were law-abiding and even unarmed were victims of police using unjustifiable force upon them. While independent organizations and activists have tried to eradicate this unacceptable behavior and phenomenon through protests and demonstrations, their efforts have not been enough. If law enforcement agencies, such as local police departments, educate their employees on the right and wrong ways to behave on the streets with civilians, the root cause of the problem will be addressed.
County sheriffs are extremely crucial. Sheriffs are largely responsible for overlooking law enforcement officials, operating jails and detention centers, and keeping courts safe. Sheriffs are given the ability to make arrests anywhere within the county, make routine traffic stops, complete accident reports, and perform criminal investigations. As if that in itself wasn’t enough, a sheriff maintains the court’s reputation for being a safe and secure environment, acting as a bailiff if needed, serving court papers, etc. Jails and detention centers are often run and controlled by sheriff’s departments as well, which results in a sheriff being held accountable for supervising inmates, protecting their rights and providing necessities for
During my internship experience I was able to learn how the Sheriff Department division has their own methods on how they perform their services such as their job duties, policies, and operations and how they differ from other agencies. The police is charge of the city limits and the sheriff is in control of the county roads which are outside the city limits but there jurisdiction only covers public county roads not private roads for example, during my ride along there was a complaint that was complaining about four wheelers making a lot of noise down the road due to the road being private the deputy advise her that the road has to be own by the county and he couldn’t do anything. During my ride along I was able to make observations on how
The law enforcement officers who protect and serve the local communities have and live stressful lives. How stressful is the occupation of a law enforcement officer in their job and in their personal lives than other occupations? How hard would it be to be a spouse or loved one of a law enforcement officer? Does the public know what goes on in a law enforcement officer's job life and the life of their family? Could the average person handle the daily stress that takes place in the lives of law enforcement officers? These are several questions that individuals could ask themselves on any given day. What are the answers to these questions? I know firsthand, because I am a wife of a law
