As a leader within an organization, teamwork is such an important quality to possess. Teamwork allows the employees to operate together, forming a cohesive bond. In fact, with teamwork, tasks are done efficiently and in a timely manner. Teamwork is so important especially within the healthcare world because healthcare providers and employees have to work together in order to provide the patient with the highest amount of quality of care. Therefore, if I were a leader of an interprofessional healthcare team, I would decide to choose volunteers that were dedicated to this improvement project. According to McLeod (2010), “The secret of getting people more engaged in their work is for their leaders to become more engaged with them.” For example, if I show up to the meetings emotionally as well as intellectually, this will show the volunteers how much I care about this improvement project. Having human connection is a necessity to have when working together because it allows the group to form a special bond as well as relate to one another. In my opinion, it is much more meaningful to meet the individuals face-to-face instead of texting, emailing, or calling one another. According to Jacoby (2014), “You should communicate with the employees frequently, and actually speak with them face-to-face because every staff needs to know they are valued, and communicating in person with them is the best way to show your appreciation for their hard work.” For instance, it is important to have weekly meetings to see where the volunteers are with the amount of work that has been assigned to them. At these meetings, I can assess if the amount of work is too much or too challenging for the employees. I can also see if they are falling behind with their actual responsibilities within our organization. This would tell me if I should either recruit more volunteers, or possibly decrease the amount of tasks I assign each of the employees. Also, at these meetings I would ask the volunteers what their thoughts and opinions were on the improvement project. Here they would state if maybe the volunteer work is too much, too challenging, or it is extremely boring and they are uninterested. For example if you work in the Labor and Delivery Department, you get forms from the volunteer office to the actual labor and delivery halls where the mothers are with their newborns. There forms are filled with the name of the mother’s way of delivery her baby’s gender and date of delivery. Sometimes the in different departments the volunteers are asked to do different things. The volunteers sometimes may not be doing their work. Many volunteers “help improve the reputation of volunteers worldwide by doing what you say you'll do, whether it's honoring the volunteer role and schedule you'd agreed to, providing ample notice if you're unable to perform your tasks or responsibilities, saying no or stepping away from volunteering when necessary, or simply serving as a good representative of the organization in the community” (A Volunteer's Bill of Rights and Responsibilities). This is evidence that when the volunteers are getting away with things that shouldn’t be doing, are forgetting why there are spending their time at the hospital and why they shouldn’t be given more to do. Importance of teamwork is that when a team works well together they tend to understand their team members strengths and weaknesses. Strong teamwork can benefit from the team members and I say this because they become more capable at splitting up tasks so that they are accomplished by the members of the team that are more highly qualified. If businesses didn’t have strong teamwork within their business, it could make everything a lot harder for managers of the business to settle certain staff members, whom can fulfil tasks at their incomparable standard.
During the two and a half years of my pharmacy journey, I have been thinking what can a pharmacist do within the healthcare interprofessional team to better help the patients in order to achieve the best health outcome. I work in a clinic as well as inpatient pharmacy, additionally, I had my rotations at CVS and Regions Hospital. all these experiences shape my version of the pharmacists at different settings. Therefore, in various pharmacy settings, pharmacists can work differently with the whole healthcare team. The recent PED-Rx events inspired me how important pharmacists can play roles in when working in a team.
This aim of the assignment is to analyse the case study (Appendix 1) by integrating three main themes; Interprofessional teamwork, culture and diversity and social policy. Throughout, I will be developing a greater understanding of culture and diversity which is essential in order to provide culturally competence care to a diverse population. Furthermore, I will have a detailed knowledge on the value of Interprofessional team working within the health settings and its benefits on individual. Later, I will apply this knowledge on character ‘Amelia’ who is my main focus from case study. I will be using relevant literatures as an evidence and analyse current policies including legislations and guidance in relation to issues which Amelia and her family will be facing.
In the decision-making process related to patient care nurses are often perceived as having less authority than doctors. This can impact on how they behave and are treated within interprofessional teams. This essay will discuss interprofessional practice and the role of nurses within interprofessional teams. It will examine challenges faced by nurses in being accepted as equal partners within these teams, and explore solutions to this issue.
Health care organizations and the way care is delivered is rapidly changing. Being able to manage, promote, and, facilitate interprofessional team work is essential for health care organizations to be successful. Team synergy for successful interprofessional teams means there is cooperation, collaboration, and the coordination of patient-centered care (LeBlanc, 2014). Working together toward a common goal is a common theme for successful interprofessional teams (Hart, 2015).
The Institute of Medicine (2003) recommended incorporating core competencies into the education for all health professionals resulting in better quality education; therefore, ultimately improving patient care. One of the core competencies was to “work in interdisciplinary teams” in order to achieve the most favorable outcomes of patients. An interprofessional team is defined by Lakhani, Benzies, & Hayden (2012) as a group of people who have “complimentary skills and are committed to a common purpose for which they have shared responsibility.” According to Nancarrow et al.
During my time as a junior program coordinator at the Heart and Stroke foundation, I was able to influence my team of seventeen volunteers to successfully achieve the retention goal for the Heart Month Canvassing Campaign. I used a very open and collaborative approach in which I involved all the volunteers in the decision making process and encouraged them to take ownership of the work we were doing. I was open to their ideas and ensured that each volunteer had an opportunity to voice their own thoughts and opinions. I think this approach was successful because it encouraged a diversity of perspectives as well as the exchange of ideas among all the members. This approach also allowed the volunteers to have a sense of ownership and appreciation
This was particularly important since our group project was completely unstructured in the beginning with each of Healthier Initiative groups being unsure of where exactly we would fit in. As such, we invested a significant amount of time in figuring out each of our roles in establishing the project and learned to rely on each other’s specific skill sets to formulate our different projects. Further, we had frequent check-ins with feedback to ensure that we were meeting targets that we had set for ourselves. The cycle of feedback extended to our projects which were reworked multiple times to ensure that we were best addressing the needs of the community. This cycle though sometimes tedious helped to strengthen the team dynamic by encouraging individual growth whilst allowing for buy-in from all members involved in the
Teamwork is vital in healthcare. When all participants are engaged in a program, goals are successfully achieved. Being able to communicate and work collectively as a team requires an appreciation for each other’s area of practice. Every team member has an important role and being acknowledged provides a sense of responsibility and accountability. Essentially, inter-professional collaboration helps ensure that the patient is getting care that is not only accessible but also comprehensive. The plan of a patients’ care includes active participation by all health care professionals working interdependently in accordance to the patient’s preferences, values and beliefs. The health care team accomplishes the goal of meeting the patient’s medical needs by delivering evidence-based practice. To deliver quality care, the patient should always be involved.
I’m currently interested in internal medicine and orthopedic surgery. However, I’m still undecided, because I feel like I haven’t been exposed to all the fields to make a formal decision. Thus, I would like to keep an open mind coming in and pick a field that I truly love. As a member of the armed forces, I truly believe in teamwork and how working as a team would be beneficial to the patients in term of exploring an appropriate treatment plan tailoring specifically to the patient needs. I choose to devote most of my professional time in patient care because that is one of reasons I want to practice medicine. The role of teamwork in enhancing problem solving skills, cohesion, learning, and productivity can no longer be ignored. Proper teamwork plays an integral role in promoting the effective implementation and fulfillment of shared goals in a team project in a manner that is better and quicker. Team work also provides a solid platform on which team members can take on different responsibilities and contribute in ways that together makes the entire team an effective unit.
