As a leader within an organization, teamwork is such an important quality to possess. Teamwork allows the employees to operate together, forming a cohesive bond. In fact, with teamwork, tasks are done efficiently and in a timely manner. Teamwork is so important especially within the healthcare world because healthcare providers and employees have to work together in order to provide the patient with the highest amount of quality of care. Therefore, if I were a leader of an interprofessional healthcare team, I would decide to choose volunteers that were dedicated to this improvement project. According to McLeod (2010), “The secret of getting people more engaged in their work is for their leaders to become more engaged with them.” For example, if I show up to the meetings emotionally as well as intellectually, this will show the volunteers how much I care about this improvement project. Having human connection is a necessity to have when working together because it allows the group to form a special bond as well as relate to one another. In other words, sitting down and connecting to my volunteers would show them how much I care about them as well as how important the project is to our organization. In my opinion, it is much more meaningful to meet the individuals face-to-face instead of texting, emailing, or calling one another. According to Jacoby (2014), “You should communicate with the employees frequently, and actually speak with them face-to-face because every staff needs to know they are valued, and communicating in person with them is the best way to show your appreciation for their hard work.” For instance, it is important to have weekly meetings to see where the volunteers are with the amount of work that has been assigned to them. At these meetings, I can assess if the amount of work is too much or too challenging for the employees. I can also see if they are falling behind with their actual responsibilities within our organization. This would tell me if I should either recruit more volunteers, or possibly decrease the amount of tasks I assign each of the employees. Also, at these meetings I would ask the volunteers what their thoughts and opinions were on the improvement project. Here they would state if maybe the volunteer work is too much, too challenging, or it is extremely boring and they are uninterested.
