1. What kind of a person should a sociologist be?
A sociologist should be able to observe and understand the realities of human behavior and the social settings in which it happens without being influenced emotionally or personally.
What does Berger mean when he refers to sociologists as "Professional
Peeping Toms?"
When Berger refers to sociologists as "Professional Peeping Toms", he means to "unmask the pretensions and the propaganda by which men cloak their actions with each other." An example would be: observing how a family really interacts with each other, responds to their environment, etc., behind closed doors without them knowing so that they cannot fake the way they really live, behave and act as a

3. How does a sociologist get new insights about the human condition, in other
words: how do they obtain their data?
A sociologist obtains their data by the scientific method as described above (utilizing the scientific method) observation, hypothesis testing, data analysis, and generalization. A sociologist would have to ask many questions. Knowledge of history, biological data, and environment are factors to be considered, therefore research would be important too. Seeing how all the facts are related, how the facts affect us, etc, would give new insights about the human condition.
4. Does a sociologist need a specific terminology (a special language)?
In paragraph six of Berger's article he states, "Sociological perspective can then be understood in terms of such phrases as "seeing through," "looking behind," very much as such phrases would be employed in common speech--"seeing through his game," "looking behind the scenes"--in other words, "being up on all the tricks."
Language is important in understanding from a sociological perspective, cultures, how we are linked to the past, and affords us the ability to communicate. Language gains wisdom. I would think using sociological terminology would give one the ability to use one word or a few words to describe a whole concept, idea, results of their particular research, etc.
5. What does it mean,
Sociology is and what do sociologists study. It is also vital to look at the three basic
The sociologist imagination takes general concepts and makes them connect to the bigger picture of reality and society. One of the ways in which I utilize these methods of thinking relates to the Conflict Theory: competing interests and ideas are what make the world go round due to the push and pull of communication. My mom likes to believe in the possibility of everyone believing the same thing and working towards the same goal,
Sociologists develop theories to explain and analyze society at different levels and from different perspectives. Sociologists study everything from the micro level of analysis of small social patterns to the “big picture” which is the macro level of analysis of large social patterns.
According to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary (2010), Sociology is referred to as “.the systematic study of the development, structure, interaction, and collective behavior of organized groups of human beings” (para. 1); however, the transformable qualities of this science are not represented by this definition, as they should be. To best understand these changes, we must first consider changes within people as study objects; for as previously stated, Sociology changes in ways which are commensurate to changes in the world around it.
In Peter Berger's "Invitation to Sociology", the sociological perspective was introduced. Berger asserts that it is important to examine new or emotionally or morally challenging situations from a sociological perspective in order to gain a clearer understanding of their true meanings. This perspective requires a person to observe a situation through objective eyes. It is important to "look beyond" the stereotypical establishments of a society and focus on their true, hidden meanings. Consideration of all the hidden meanings of social customs, norms, deviations and taboos, allow one to establish an objective image about the truth behind it. This method can also be applied to understanding people. This questioning, Berger says, is the
The job of sociologists is to uncover the social laws that govern human behaviour. When they collect information about the social world, they usually subscribe to a scientific model known as the hypothetico-deductive approach. This is the model that natural science employs in, for example, laboratory experiments.
Sociology is the study of the way groups of humans interact with one another and the way social institutions such as banks, hospitals and schools act within themselves. In order to understand sociology one must first understand that different societies have different traditions and cultural norms. What is normal in Canada may not be the same for places like Europe or Japan. In different cultures they eat different foods, have different laws and preform different rituals, methods of adornment as well as having different religious beliefs. In society there will always be outliers or people who deviate from the social norm. Through these outliers sociologists are able to help in solving crimes and change the world for the better. Through these
How can sociology help people be better citizens, workers, and family members? First and foremost is by understanding what sociology is and why people study it. Next people need to understand culture and how culture is one of the main reasons people grow up so differently and why there are so many different groups of people. The definition of culture is “the values, norms, and material goods characteristic of a given group”
They all have the same concept about sociologist and how it assists people with motivating them in the right direction. However, it takes the person to do the work. Anyone can tell you to go to work or get a job, but it takes determination to get the job
Sociology studies humans and the way they live and act with their surroundings. Sociologists, every day, try to examine the prejudices that are characterized with certain groups in the world. They do so in the hopes to learn more about them and find flaws to try to eliminate the stigma that comes with them that people constantly carry around toward certain groups or cultures. Sociologists look to give insight and put a spotlight on what is wrong or
Sociology is a science that studies the overall effects and results of a person or event. It is important to seek social connection behind our everyday lives because it brings clarification and a greater understanding to our reality. Sociology is a very helpful science that can benefit every member in a society because it uses reason and research to investigate an explanation or an effect. “Sociology is the study of social life, social change, and the
The first step a sociologist takes is selecting a topic. It can be any type of topic, most sociologist “come interested in a particular topic, and they pursue it.” It can also be a topic which is an issue to the community or the world, there are times in which sociologist simply choose a topic because the funds and the help from others are available to them. Selecting a topic the world is curious to learn more about can help others to better understand and solve it. The second step is to define the problem, defining the problem is finding out what one wants to learn about the certain topic. A sociologist needs to develop a question and focus on the specific area of the topic. One example given by James M. Henslin which relates to the topic of rape is, “you may want to determine the education and work experience of rapists, or the average age of their victims.” The question can elaborate more into the subject of rape and give more profound examples. The third step is to review
Sociologist on the other hand are determined to discover the truth to form accurate generalizations and not provide incite by shrewd views or stereotypes. This is important because if sociologist use biased opinions on research instead of facts they will not be able to provide accurate information to discover patterns. Patterns are discovered through generalizations not stereotypes to form facts as a result society as a whole is
Sociologists use many different designs and methods to study society and social behavior. Most sociological research involves ethnography, or “field work” designed to depict the characteristics of a population as fully as possible.
Sociology is the study of the behavior of people and groups within society. This helps out how society works and thinks, If people understand how society thinks we can improve it. With this in mind, you can apply sociology theories and ideas to any scenario of daily life dealing with person to person interaction or even to an individual in regards to the society.
