We have learned about this and got to practice this in class. To be in the flow together is important because it allows both client and counselor to engage with each other. Since both parties become engaged, this lets the client know they are not alone, and they are being heard. Conducting assessment can be presented to seem intrusive and inhumane. The individual being assessed could detect this and feel disrespected or feel come to feel less worthy. So the individual conducting the assessment should make sure to treat the individual with dignity and worth. Counselors are expected to know the information on the DSM and know how to use it. I think it is good to know this information, because even if they do not formally right diagnosis, they
a) Direct observation is the best way to evaluate the assessor’s ability to carry out a fair and valid assessment. The observation should ideally take place in the work environment and involve the learner carrying out specific tasks as required for inclusion in the learner’s portfolio of evidence. The IQA can quickly establish the effect of the assessment on the learner and can get a good impression of the rapport that the assessor has with the learner and the
Explain legal issues, policies and procedures relevant to assessment, including those for confidentiality, health, safety and welfare
The assessor should record their assessment decision with the criteria met clearly identified. The assessor should follow procedure with regards to making this information available to authorised colleagues and should maintain confidentiality.
Unit 401 – Understanding the Principles and Practice of Internally Assuring the Quality of Assessment
To ensure a fair and objective assessment it is important that you plan well in advance and that all parties are kept informed.
The assessor can elicit further information and check that the candidate has understood the assessment fully, particularly if they have not given full answers
I used an empathetic approach during the chronological information gathering part of the assessment which stemmed from my values of dignity and respect but skills were required to do this e.g. active listening. The gathering of personal information from somebodies life experiences can be emotive and difficult for people. I anticipate that sometimes there may be circumstances that shock you in an assessment and then it could be difficult not to
4.1 Critically compare the types of feedback, support and advice that internal assessment and quality assurance staff may need to maintain and improve the quality of assessment
Clinical assessments have their place in almost every facet of the psychological and educational realms. I have been tracking down and examining what the most important aspects of assessment are that come into play in regard to drug and substance abuse, custody battles, as well as the importance the role of adhering to the ethical standards of utilizing culturally informed assessments. Clinical assessments within mental health centers are carry great importance in the identifying underlying behavioral problems, diagnosis, and treatment of patients. Behind every assessment is a clinician who
1.1 Assessment is about judging if, how and what level of learning has taken place. An assessor's function is to decide if a learner has developed skills, knowledge, understanding and competence in a particular field as well as if the learner is showing the attitude required for the application of the learning within that field. Assessing is not the same as evaluating. Rather than the focus being on the programme or course the learner is on (evaluation), the focus is instead on the learner and their development.
Some of these considerations include whether or whether not the patient should be put into the questioning/assessment at that specific moment in time. Another consideration includes being able to have an idea of what test the client will need based on what they have told you before the assessment starts. By doing this you will lower the number of assessments that you would have to choose from. Another consideration would be taking more than one test to see if you get the same result as you did in the pervious test. “Several factors should be considered before choosing an assessment instrument, including the purpose of the assessment, type of assessment outcomes, methodology, resource availability, and audience expectations (Bresciani, Zelna, & Anderson, 2004; Palomba & Banta, 1999; Schuh & Upcraft, 2001).” You must know the best outcome to suit the client and the client’s problems. With doing this it will help the patient be more comfortable in the environment in which, will help with the answers you may get from the individual during the assessment. If you do this it may help with the overall performance of the client and also give you an accurate
There are also online assessments e.g. VTCT which is an online resource and record system.
It is important that the examiner ask the correct questions for its effectiveness based on the assessment needs to make proper decisions (Royse, Thyer, & Padgett, 2010).
Assessments is a very broad term that is being used by many professions in our world today. An assessment is a way to obtain information about a client or another person to come to a conclusion about who the person is academically, mentally and so on. Assessments often get referred to as tests. But in the counseling world assessments are more than tests, we also can use interviews such as the screening process when we are fist evaluating a client. Assessments can also be obtained from other family members not just the client. So, we can have questions for their spouses, friends and so on. We must perform multiple assessments on a client because we should never rely on just one assessment for evaluating that client, this would show validity
Assessment has experienced resurgence in recent years both in the United States and abroad. Some continue to use the terms assessment and testing interchangeably. Both are vitally important to the counseling process (Juhnke, 1995). Corroborating data from a number of sources helps create a more thorough understanding of the client and his or her presenting concerns (Juhnke, 1995). Looking back the beginning of conducting assessments has come a long way. We are now using computers for faster and easier way to compute information about our clients in a timely fashion. Also with the way we diagnose the clients is constantly changing due to the changes of the mental diagnoses in the DSM-V. Therefore, competency in conducting assessments appropriately is very important in this field.
