Implementing ISO 9000
ISO 9000 has both proponents and critics. Some argue that ISO 9000 would significantly improve organizations while others argue that it does nothing but take a lot of time and money to implement and run ISO in an organization. ISO is and independent certification that is responsible for creating and publishing international standards (Dedhia, p.1). Many business people have heard of ISO but don’t know the requirements. ISO isn’t an acronym, it’s derived from the Greek word isos, which means equal (Dedhia, p.1). ISO 9000 could be a benefit to an organization’s control function of management if you have the right people in the organization. People who are committed and involved in running a business the correct way. However, aspects of the control function of management that will most benefit by the implementation of ISO 9000, requirements helped most and least by ISO 9000 implementation, and my opinion on if the benefit outweigh the cost of implementing ISO 9000 into an organization will be addressed throughout the entirety of this essay.
The pressure for organizations to become ISO 9000 certified is absolutely increasing, to the fact the corporate customers are requesting ISO 9000 certification to ensure that suppliers are paying adequate attention to quality (“ISO 9000”, p.1). Aspects of the control function of management that mostly benefit from ISO 9000 are plentiful. In my opinion, being that the ISO 9000 requires a management that is committed, involved, focused and responsive benefits the control functions of management in many categories (Dedhia, p.1). With a management that is involved in everyday operations, setting standards is a must, standards of what should be done and the efficiency of the organization. Management who is committed and responsive in an organization measure performances and corrects deviations to continue the success of the organization,
Management must ensure control over each objective by maintaining and ensuring that performance does not veer away from standard. “Controlling consists of three steps, which include (1) establishing performance standards, (2) comparing actual performance against standards, and (3) taking corrective action when necessary” (Web Books Publishing, 2010, para. 17). Performance measurement can be done in several different ways. There may be the use of financial statements, performance appraisals, customer satisfaction reports, or sales and production results. The various methods of certification such as ISO, TQM, etc. are of great value to many industries. I have personal experience with the ISO product and have received certification for ISO Leadership for the company. It was very effective in gaining efficiencies and profitability.
Second, This Standard is consistent with the key concepts and principles of International Standard ISO 15489 (2016) Records Management (National Archives of Australia, 2017). ISO 15489 is an Australian Standard which establishes the core concepts and principles for creation, capture and management of records. It also assists the records to meet the requirements and business activities (ISO 15489, 2017)

“ISO is commonly known as ‘International Organization for Standardization’, the ISO 9001:2000 standard is used for quality systems audited by outside auditors. This standard is applicable for manufacturing companies not only for software. This standard is given based on the documentation, design, production, testing, servicing and other processes.” (Testing Excellence.com, 2009).
A lack of focus on innovation, quality and continual improvement has caused many companies to falter. As forward thinking companies strive to maintain their competitiveness in the marketplace, various tools are available to assist in meeting customer needs. The focus of this paper is on two of these tools, the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence and the International Standards Organization’s (ISO) 9001:2015 set of quality standards. Each are deployed with somewhat different goals in mind, yet they are not contradictory to each other. In fact, they can even be used in conjunction with one another. In the following passages, readers will get a brief overview of both the Baldridge Criteria and the ISO 9001:2015 standards, the overall goals of each, and a description of the similarities and differences between the two. Although incorporating similar elements, the differences between the Baldrige Performance Criteria and the ISO 9001:2015 standards create the potential for greater satisfaction and continual improvement in organizations when they’re used in combination with each other.
Companies are perpetually affected by compliance. If a company is to meet compliance standards, they must maintain this if they wish to continue operating. If they are unable to meet them, then the business is likely doomed for failure. It is a tough battle on either front. To make matters harder, some compliances are not actually a legal requirement, but not meeting them would spell certain doom for the company. This idea is no different for Organization A. Organization A’s reputation and maintained business continuity are contingent upon specific regulations and compliance. Without this compliance, the organization will no longer hold the respect and credibility they currently have. This paper focuses on Organization A’s attitude and handling of the ISO 27001 certification as well as organizational auditing concerns.
For the third and fourth tools, Yell used and achieved standard regulation from ISO 9000 and ISO 14000. Description of ISO 9000 is an internationally recognized quality standard to create and maintain quality assurance system in design, development, production, installation, and servicing for all types of organization, in many industries. In addition, it contains rules and regulations about practicing in good management, where it can recognize the basic discipline and give criteria to make sure that services and products meet customer needs and requirements. As a conclusion, it can help the company to deal with customer orders, stock control, purchasing, service provision and service delivery. Whether ISO 14000 is an internationally recognized act for create and maintain environmental management system which is suitable for all types of organization as well. The purpose of the standard is to reduce the pollution and waste of production from the company. As a conclusion, it can avoid the company being sued in the future because of negatively effect to the environment.
On the other hand, ISO 13485 is similar to ISO 9001 but they are slightly different. ISO 9001 is focused on ensuring that an organization must continually improve the quality system and provide products that satisfy customer requirements. Whereas ISO 13485 ensures that an organization maintains the quality system and provide
ISO 9001 however requires top management to establish responsibilities and authorities within the company, including establishment of an ISO 9000 management representative from within the company.
Control - the last of the five functions of management, includes establishing performance standards, which are aligned to the company 's objectives. It also involves evaluation and reporting of actual job performance. When these points are studied by the management, it is necessary to compare both these things. Global competitiveness had increased the need to invest more into the efficiency of management and importance of having and understanding globalized standards (Aba and Badar 42). The ISO 9000 was created in 1987 and is a series of quality management standards. The ISO 9000 standards is so malleable that they are updated and changed roughly every three years since their endorsement (Aba and Badar 42). Because the ISO is versatile, certified companies are guaranteed exemplar standards being implemented regularly. Quazi and Padibjo (1998) stated that certified companies saw an improvement in their quality and an increase in their sales and market share (as cited in Aba and Badar 45). A benefit of ISO 9000 is that it highlights an effective system of quality that is an abetment in eliminating errors which in turn saves money (Aba and Badar 43-44). On reviews of a financial and scale efficiency, it was revealed that ISO certified businesses are more efficient than businesses that are not certified (Aba and Badar 45). The ISO set the foundation for company standards and established fundamental properties for further research in developing prosperous quality assurance programs.
ISO/IEC 27002 standard aligned with ISO/IEC 9001 (the Quality Management System) aims to meet the needs of non-Government agencies. An organizations management system needs to meet a basic best-practices management system. The organization is required to have an appropriately defined risk management process and assessment
If a firm wishes to increase quality or overcome operational problems they may undertake this strategy using ISO documents, as they will layout the standards that are required, and can include technical requirements and guidance on the optimising of operational efficiency. The process of working towards an ISO will involve choosing the relevant standard and then assessing the current performance against that standard to identify shortfalls. This is one of the first stages in almost all quality improvement processes (Mintzberg et al., 2008).
This paper I have written contains a lot of information about ISO 9000 and Quality Management Systems. I will first talk about some of the history and origins of the ISO phenomenon. I will also mention some of the changes and elements of the Quality Management Systems, financial issues, pros and cons of being certified, and the relationship ISO 9000 has with ISO 14000.
