Joseph Rudyard Kipling, a British writer and poet, was born on December 30, 1865, in Bombay, India. He died on January 18, 1936, in London, England. He is considered one of the most dominant literary figures in Victorian literature. Kipling was the eldest of two children, son of John Lockwood Kipling, principal of the Jeejeebyhoy School of Art, and Alice Macdonald, friends of followers of the Pre-Raphaelite movement. Although Kipling's first five years of life were borderline perfect, in 1871 his happy world took a nosedive. To begin schooling, his parents sent him and his younger sister, Trix, to England; when they arrived, they were placed at Lorne Lodge, a boarding house in Southsea.
