1. What insights have I gained about my role as an educational leader from these chapters? A. These chapters enlightened me on three areas about education. The first area, is the thin line that educators must walk with regards to religion. This is because as educators we have to protect the religious tolerance of every student within the public school system. For instance, the United States Supreme Court has ruled in several cases about religious freedom versus secular teachings (Koppelman, 2015, p. 153). Likewise, these chapters also shined light onto the struggle between males and females, and the fact that within our society we do not give equal support to the genders. This means that males are often giving leeway to do things that females are not. With that notion in mind, these chapters also revealed the struggle that goes on between students of different sexual orientations, and the fact that too often LGBTQ issues are not discussed or these students feel left out. For example, schools often engage in heterosexual assumption, and depict homosexuality as disgusting and devious (Koppelman, 2015, p. 264). 2. I plan on encouraging religious freedom by exposing my students to different religious ideas; for example bring in members of clergy from different religious sects to simply just speak about their religion. Additionally, I would like to begin an interfaith student group that allows students of different faiths to come together, and share and reaffirm positive attitudes about different religions. Above all, I would allow students to understand that religious faith is a personal preference, and not compel students to choose a particular faith (Koppelman, 2015, p. 164). Self leadership through personal learning and reflection “provides a foundation for effective leadership skills” (Watson, 2004). The Canadian College of Health Leaders (CCHL) includes self leadership as one of it’s five core leadership competencies, which is defined as “The Lead Self” domain. As part of Leading Self, effective leaders must demonstrate: self awareness, managing self, developing self and demonstrating character. (CCHL, 2010).
One of the challenges facing nurses today is learning how to be an effective leader. Assessing and analyzing the style of leadership the nurse possesses is the first step in facing the challenge. The purpose of this paper is to analyze and understand the characteristics of my style of leadership from an assessment performed by Gallup Strength Finders and DiSC and compare the strengths I have in common with Eleanor Roosevelt.
As an officer in the United States Army, it has been imperative for me to understand every facet of leadership and why it remains important to be an effective leader. During this course, I have learned some valuable lessons about myself as a leader and how I can improve on my leadership ability in the future. In the changing business environment, leaders of all organisations may face unprecedented uncertainty, especially the technology advancement and changes among the employees. To survive and succeed, leaders should have some necessary attributes. Meanwhile, some changes for leadership skills have to be made to confront the challenges.
When I began this course I was very nervous because I had no idea of the scope of the course. I was unfamiliar with the Canadian education system and other students. After receiving instructions from my professor, I introduced myself to the person beside me and this process helped to break the ice. I developed a good friendship with the student and this technique used by the professor helped me develop better communication and relationship skills. After few classes, I felt very comfortable and the nervousness and anxiety faded away. I learned about leadership, power relationships in the profession, personal, cultural, professional and organizational, each of which is very important in the nurse’s career. I also gained knowledge regarding client centred care.
After watching this interview, I feel that a well defined leadership purpose statement is the distinction between a good leader and a great leader. Carolyn McKnight’s interview on leadership purpose statements really opened my eyes to the power of these statements, and the time and energy one needs to put into creating a leadership purpose statement. At first it seemed that completing a statement this powerful would be a very daunting task. After watching Mrs. McKnight’s interview, I am confident in my ability to come up with a statement, and that I will have the courage to follow through with it.
It would appear that my original theory regarding the applicability and practicality of this capstone was accurate. This course has managed to successfully supplement the knowledge I had previously acquired in other courses. For example, I was familiar with and understood the basic principles of leadership. However, this course has taught me that the ability to lead is not an exact science, but an art and determining how to proceed when faced with uncertainty or a highly volatile situation is an exceptional challenge.
My leadership philosophy is founded on trust, integrity, open communication, proactivity, and purpose. This view will enable you to understand my values and expectations as your leader. Trust and integrity: Integrity is paramount in building trust between individuals and teams. I believe that for faith to thrive within the organization, culture of integrity, openness and honesty should be cultivated and maintained. As a leader, I intend to earn your respect and trust by being a person of good character, hardworking, honest, and decisive.
My leadership philosophy is deeply rooted in my 12 years of experiences in the Army. As a leader, I believe in being accessible and mentoring subordinates. I recognize success and work hard to assist my subordinates in overcoming their difficulties in performance. I welcome feedback sessions to remain flexible and open to change. Leadership is a process of influencing activities of a particular group of people with the aim of attaining certain stipulated goals. In defining leadership there is need to consider a particular group, the common goals and the duties that are allocated to specific members of the group depending on their abilities (Fiedler 1976). Leadership therefore cannot successfully occur unless members of the group are given different considerations in terms of personality, traits and responsibilities. Leadership comes in many different forms but they all are heading toward the same goal; and that is to communicate with people. Some people are silent leaders and lead by example some are more vocal. Nevertheless, whatever type of leader you are, there are certain criteria that must be met. For example being a good role model, being dependable, being trust worthy, these are all things that a true leader must possess. However, all leaders have their strengths and weakness and these are a few areas in which men and woman striving to become leaders often have trouble dealing with.
If one has no leadership ability, one cannot be a leader. If one does not make what his or her followers consider the correct decisions to achieve their goals, no one will have faith in the leader's abilities and, consequently, no one will follow and without followers, there can be no leader. Another important criterion which one must have in order to be a leader is a person who leads a crowd in the direction where the goal can be accomplish as well as someone who acknowledges a problem and finds solutions to it.
During the past ten weeks, I have strengthened my concept of what constitutes effective leadership. Importantly, it is a leadership style that maximises the contributions of followers to achieve the desired outcomes for the organisation they represent. As Nanjundeswaraswamy & Swamy (2014, p.57) explains, effective leaders need to balance the drive to achieve a task with managing relationships. Therefore, it is essential for good leadership to not only focus on the task but develop, motivate and empower team members to strive for the achievement of task goals.
