Prior to taking this course, I did not truly know what my learning style was. This course allowed me to identify which learning styles worked best for me as a student and those that didn’t. I now know that I learn better through verbal and visual. Throughout my class schedule, I have 4 teachers who each have their own teaching method, so I created a learning plan to help me better understand the material. I took into consideration that each teacher has a style they teach best in (i.e. lectures) and used that as a base in my learning plan. Here is my learning plan for two of my classes. Let’s begin with my Psychology class. In my psychology class, the teacher, Mr. Adkison uses a variety of teaching styles depending on the material. I would have to say out of all of them the one that is most used is a lecture or verbal with group discussions. This is also one of my strongest teaching styles due to the fact that it is more interactive and allows the class as a whole to discuss what we went over that day. My style of learning lines up with his method of teaching. When listening to his lectures, and looking at the pictures, graphs, etc. it allows me to make connections …show more content…
As I stated in the first paragraph, I prefer more interactive teaching methods and that is his teaching method. The way Mr. Beasley’s classroom is setup also displays his teaching style. He has the desk the students sit in set up on 3 sides on his desk, and behind his desk is the projection screen. This makes it easier to lecture and allows all the students a view of the teacher and the projection screen. I would say this is the best style for me seeing that it allows me to make easier connections between the subject matter and what the teacher is lecturing about. When sitting in class, it is easier to ask questions, and take notes since everything I have to focus and know is directly in my line of
Before taking the Learning Style Inventory, I always felt I was mostly a tactile learner. I would be able to learn in a visual fashion if need be, but I would rather learn and by doing and making mistakes. After taking the Learning Style Inventory, the results definitely supported my initial thoughts. My tactile preference was 14 points higher than my auditory score, but only 2 points higher than my visual. Although I believe I will always will be a stronger tactile learner, my visual learner skills have been improving throughout my college learning experience. Plus, it’s important to note that many tactile learning situations are dependent on visual learning. This means that tactilely learning has been strengthening my visual learning skills.
Learning style quizzes provide information based on an individual’s method of learning. They may be used as a tool to significantly increase the efficiency of studying. Having a greater understanding of learning styles allows individuals to most effectively learn new concepts and increase their ability to retain information. Using this quiz, I have been able to achieve a greater understanding of the learning styles which are most effective to me.
After answering questions from Learning Style Inventory I found out that I am a visual learner. Which means I like to organize work to avoid distractions. Makes sense to me I hate to work where all paperwork is all over the place, I actually have to organize it so I won’t be distracted. I like as well to use flash card, visual strategies to improve memory. I also like to do list, to make sure I did everything I was supposed to do today. I also learned that as teacher we have to learn what type of learner our students are so we can use appropriate strategies that will help them in their learning
Each individual has a unique way of learning which is referred to as a learning style. It is important for an individual to know their learning style because it can allow them to work on their weaknesses and develop on their strengths. Sometimes, individuals use learning style that does not correspond to their right way of learning. Once an individual knows what their learning style entails, they can improve and enhance more on their career path. For instance, one’s learning style is important in academic success when discovered; they will have the ability to understand and grasp anything in their future endeavours.
For years, there have been many theorists who have shared their views on how individuals learn. Such research has determined that individuals have different learning styles. It is important for teacher to understand the learning styles of both themselves and their students because it helps them to relay the subject knowledge to the students. The teacher is in a position where they must be able to assess the learning styles of their students. This means that the students and teachers are both in a process of learning.
i. Understanding the learners learning styles can make my course to be engaging. Flemming (1987) noted three different styles of learning; visual, kinaesthetic and aural. In order to know which method(s) to use to benefit my students the first lesson on my course will centre around discussions on what they already know, the resources they are familiar with, and a learning style questionnaire which will provide me with information on preferred learning styles. Effectiveness can also be enhanced if I adapt my teaching style to give maximum benefit to learners.
Understanding learning styles can help in the development of self-learning and influence the teaching strategies that may be used in helping others understand new matter. For example, when teaching the VARK learning style having the learner complete the VARK questionnaire so that they can develop an understanding of how they learn would be great. In the real world life application, it completing a learning styles assessment is just not practical. It is the responsibility of the teacher to develop multimodal ways to deliver information. It would include something like a lecture with a handout in a possible power point format that include diagrams of how the information may be applied and complete it with a discussion to cement the information. The lecture appeals to the aural learner. The power point aids the reader along with the visual learners. How to apply the information stimulates the kinesthetic learner and the completion with an open discussion cements the information and gives the aural learner a chance to
From doing the Learning Style Inventory, I learned that I learn better when I write things down and when I have a visual of the information I am learning. For my writing style way of learning, I found I should take notes. When the professors give us notes I should write them in my hand writing. I just need to be able to read my notes because I write so fast some times.
When entering fall semester at Ramapo College, I realized that each professor had their own style when teaching. I had to adjust to each professors teaching technique. Obviously, adjusting was a very hard mechanism to adopt too. I did not have a studying technique as well, which made it harder on me. So,
Your child/student took a “Learning Styles Inventory” last week to determine how they learn best. They discovered that they were a visual, an auditory, or a kinesthetic learner.
As can be seen in the attached results, my learning styles are generally closer towards the midline, with my highest numeric value being a seven in favor of global learning, My tendency to favor the average has helped me to learn effectively in many diverse settings. Because I have almost no preference between active and reflective learning, I am able to learn from both teaching styles, however my slight affinity for active learning may explain why my skills in laboratory sciences and other hands on subjects are slightly better than my skills in classes requiring more thoughtful
However, as through as this theory may seem, there are still some who are skeptic of the learning style notion. In the article "Let Go of 'Learning Styles' Myth,” it states “Teachers are well meaning, but buying into the "learning styles" myth has not been definitively shown to improve educational outcomes. So let it die already.” Researchers and educators alike who do not accept this theory agree that students should learn to understand material regardless of their learning style, in order to strive in the competitive world. Even though this ideology makes sense, the outcomes of using our outdated methods have unfortunately been distraught. Students deserve to be successful in their education without having tests determining how smart they
It makes sense, therefore, that before we explore how we teach, we understand how people learn’. From discussion with my student prior to the lesson I learnt that she too had a more activist learning style and I felt that this match would provide a more harmonious learning environment between myself and the student. Whilst there is validity in attempting to match teaching styles with learning styles (Quinn & Hughes 2007) there is also research to show that by moving the student outside of their dominant learning style will stimulate learning and the challenge will promote more creative learning (Tennant 1997 and Partridge 1983).
Every teacher has a different method of teaching. The teachers that I have had in my school career have been no exception. In this way, each teacher has set an example for me, as a future teacher, to follow or not to follow as I see fit. With the examples from my teachers and in continuing my education, I am developing my own method of teaching. I plan to use a combination of teaching methods in my own classroom. My method will be an eclectic approach because I will be using components of more than one philosophy. I will be using essentialism, behaviorism, progressivism, and existentialism.
In fact, I realized, as I continued to read, my teachers did a lot of modeling and demonstrations on completing a task. In addition, they had the ability to adjust learning to their students learning need and style, even though learning styles were not part of the system yet (Hamond et al., n.d.). Therefore, much of my teaching mimics how I learned from those teachers. I believe in guiding my students toward discovery on their own; therefore, my lessons were thought out, so they encompassed each student’s learning style. I taught 6th-grade social studies, not an exhilarating course to garner excitement.
