M3 Learning Styles
There are three main learning styles which are Visual, Auditory and Kinaesthetic. The three of these are different ways of how you prefer to learn, and how you consume information efficiently.
Visual Learning
This style uses images, pictures, colours and maps to let the learner see, so they are able to consume the information and communicate with other people. You able to visualize objects and the outcomes in your mind’s eye. The learner has a good spatial sense, which enables you to have a good sense of direction. This means that you can easily find your way around maps and hardly get lost. If you’re a visual learner then you use other visual media to help to learn. This will allow you to make your visualizations stand out more and make sure that new material among others are able to float inside your head.
The main characteristics of a visual learner are that they remember what they see, instead of what they hear. They also prefer diagrams, pictures and to read and write rather than listening. This learner is usually good at spelling, but forgets names, and needs to study in quite. Also, they would tune out when they try to pay attention and they would need an overall new and purpose beginning a project.
Auditory Learning
This style involves the learner to consume information through listening. They depend on hearing and speaking as they main way of learning. The learner has to be able to hear what is being said, so they can understand the
In school everyone learns differently; however, according to the article The Myth of Learning Styles, “The idea of learning styles is based on a theory… developed in the early 1980’s.” (pg 1.) A lot has certainly changed from the 1980’s as we learn new more material in every class we take. With this being said, someone the scientists referred to in the article “assumed” that learning styles challenged the way of the educational system when in reality, it is simply a myth. Students, like myself, only prefer to process information that they find useful or interesting to him or her. Thus giving us the problems of that teachers may take too long to cover one idea, and students may miss out out on information because he or she did not prefer that learning style.
In the learning styles test, it resulted that I am a visual learner. I believe that this is true because I would rather to see a demonstration of what I am supposed to do so I can be able to do it by myself later on. It is effective for me when I am studying because I can remember what I saw as opposed to what I heard. Also, I get distracted easily therefore if a class session tends to be long and only involves discussions and talking, I tend to space out a lot. The results says that visual learners should always be sure to look at the study materials and make use of flash cards, which I tend to do all the time. Secondly, the teacher gave us a test for my learning style. The results show, my learning style is visual. I was not surprising in the result because I know myself very well. i. Understanding the learners learning styles can make my course to be engaging. Flemming (1987) noted three different styles of learning; visual, kinaesthetic and aural. In order to know which method(s) to use to benefit my students the first lesson on my course will centre around discussions on what they already know, the resources they are familiar with, and a learning style questionnaire which will provide me with information on preferred learning styles. Effectiveness can also be enhanced if I adapt my teaching style to give maximum benefit to learners.
Understanding learning styles can help in the development of self-learning and influence the teaching strategies that may be used in helping others understand new matter. For example, when teaching the VARK learning style having the learner complete the VARK questionnaire so that they can develop an understanding of how they learn would be great. In the real world life application, it completing a learning styles assessment is just not practical. It is the responsibility of the teacher to develop multimodal ways to deliver information. It would include something like a lecture with a handout in a possible power point format that include diagrams of how the information may be applied and complete it with a discussion to cement the information. The lecture appeals to the aural learner. The power point aids the reader along with the visual learners. Learning styles are defined as an individual's mode of gaining knowledge. The most common learning styles addressed are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. Auditory leaners understand information through hearing. Visual learners need more visual aids in the learning process, such as diagrams, webs, or pictures. Kinesthetic learners learn better by using manipulatives or by being physically involved in the learning process. Learning styles is a piece of the “backbone” of differentiated learning. Both are used to individualize instruction to help students achieve the most success.
In preparation for an exam or in class assignment, studying consists of me to completing a series of math problems over and over and/or reading material multiple times. While completing assignments and test I can often close my eyes and visualize information on a page without it being directly in front of me. When we did the Learning Styles: Modality Preference Inventory worksheet, I scored a 23 in Visual, a 16 in Auditory, and a 23 in Kinesthetic/Tactile. For me, I always had to write things down in order to even come close to remembering it. I also had to actually do what was being done to understand. I always seemed to be both a visual and hands on type of person.
Education benefits individual mentally, emotionally and physically by placing them in better place than they were previously before. Everybody would agree that learning something new would take place throughout the life. Furthermore, Felder and Henriques (1995, p. 21) explained learning styles as "the ways in which an individual characteristically acquires, retains and retrieves information". However, different learners possess different characteristics and different preferred learning styles to perceive, process, take in and understand information.

I know that I am a Visual Learner, and everything I learn is through what I see. I learned that I am able to learn through different teaching styles and still learn the necessary information that is being given. Most people can relate to being a visual learner as it helps to see the information and retain it as well. Another type of common learning style is bodily kinesthetic which I feel I also learn well from as well.
