Practicing or reviewing material from class is the most common instructional purpose. Other purposes include the introduction of new material and the application of learned skills to new situations. Examples of non-instructional purposes are to fulfill district homework policies, open and grown parent-teacher lines of communication, as well as improved parent-child communication regarding school. (Cooper et al., 2006) Students, teachers and parents experience these benefits of the homework assignments.
Additional Benefits of Homework While the primary reason for assigning homework is to aid and reinforce instruction, there is growing evidence that the practice of homework can have additional benefits including managing distraction, self-efficacy, and perceived responsibility for learning (Bembenutty, 2009). While these self-regulation tasks, such as time management, setting goals, effort and persistence in completing difficult tasks, and self-monitoring one's performance, are important to academic success, they are also vitally important life skills, especially for successful professional writers, athletes, artists, and scientists. (Ramdass and Zimmerman, 2011). Other benefits include long-term academic benefits such as better study skills, as well as nonacademic benefits such as greater self -direction and more independent problem-solving. In addition, homework fosters greater self-direction and self-discipline in students. These are the necessary qualities that will help them become high-achieving students. These skills acquired from homework will also benefit students in the real-world, and in college too. Students who regularly completed homework will be more inquisitive in life and participate in more independent problem solving (Plato). In college, professors expect that students have well-developed study habits from all those years of homework. Proponents believe that homework serves as the foundation for acquiring these qualities and study habits, however, the opposers of homework believe these benefits to be highly subjective, and cite lack of evidence as their reasoning behind refuting this
Not only does homework help student but also it creates interaction between teens and parents. However, statics has shown that even though homework is a way to refresh what students have learned, it also create stress for students. Homework has shown its benefits for student but most of the time when student is given a homework it’s likely he/she will not do it. They believe it’s stressful,and when they can’t get the right answer, they gave up instantly instead of keep practicing. According to researchers, they believe that when student do more homework they get better grades and do well on the test/quizzes that were given. Even though homework has many advantage toward students, it also has disadvantage. Which include having too much homework and these things could lead to mental health issue toward students.
“Homework is arguably the worst punishment inflicted upon the student body.” One would think this extreme statement would come from the 10-year boys and girls who complain to their parents about the homework they have to complete. However, Rodney Jones starts of his argument against homework using this statement. He argues that homework does not help children taking up all their time. Continuing, he explains how parents should extend child’s knowledge out of school instead of homework and in the end these assignments do not help students grade. However, in contrast of Jones’ beliefs homework indeed benefits children’s learning through the small amounts of extra practice it gives to help the students excel.

The databases of EBSCOhost, Google Scholar, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature with full text were used to identify evidence-based research concerning the issue of nurse faculty shortage and strategies for dealing with the problem. Identifying keywords selected for the search were nurse faculty shortage, nurse faculty, nurse faculty shortage solutions, and global nurse faculty shortage. Published articles chosen for review fell between 2010 and 2015. Sixty articles matched the key terms in the initial search. From these sixty, eleven of the most relevant and appropriate articles were selected, evaluated, and are discussed within following the review of literature.
Homework has been at the front of school reform since the early 1900’s. Debates over the benefits of homework include “immediate impact on the retention and understanding of the material it covers” (Cooper, 1989, p.86) and downsides of homework include “satiation, denial of access to leisure time and community activities; parental interference; cheating; and increased differences between high and low achievers” (Cooper, 2006, p.7) have led to a see-saw of support and objection regarding homework. There is support from several studies (Maltese, Tai, Fan, 2012; Cooper, Robinson, Patall, 2006; Falkenberg & Barbetta, 2013) that cite homework as a source of increasing students’ achievement level. Some get more assignments than others depending on the rigor of one’s courses, but everyone is bound to be assigned homework in high school; in some cases, it can make or break students’ GPAs. Despite its appearances in nearly every high school across the country and the world, homework has become a hotly debated topic as of late due to increasing quantities of assignments and the immense pressure put on students to complete them. The purpose for assigning homework in my classroom is to reinforce material learned in class, for further practice, and to develop self-management skills. Homework also serves a purpose in connecting the classroom to the student’s parents. Homework will allow students to share with their parents what they are learning in class and allow the parents to be involved.
The article, “Evaluation of the Dogs, Physical Activity, and Walking (Dogs PAW) Intervention”, by Richards, E., Ogata, N., & Cheng, C. aim to conduct a longer-term evaluation of the ability of the Dogs, Physical Activity, and Walking (Dogs PAW) intervention to increase dog walking among dog owners. The research problem being addressed explores maintenance of physical activity (PA) behaviour change postintervention and whether changes in behavioral theoretical constructs mediated changes in dog walking behaviour.
Another pro of homework is that it has been linked to higher student achievement. “Duke University Professor Harris Cooper and his research team identified 35 studies that found a positive correlation between homework and achievement, but only after elementary school” (Fuglei). Younger students are less capable of fully reaping the benefits of homework because their study habits are not completely developed yet, among other reasons. However, older students have greatly benefited from homework when it comes to their test scores. Dr. Cooper again stated that “Across five studies, the average student who did homework had a higher unit test score than the students not doing homework” (Fuglei). However, those against homework disagree with these claims, and hold the opinion that homework is unrelated to student success. They attribute higher tests scores and other achievement to other factors, not homework. Another pro is that homework allows teachers to gauge how well students are understanding the material, and then modify instruction as needed. Teachers can also identify struggling students through their homework performance and provide more assistance for them. This way, students won’t feel like they are being singled out or feel embarrassed for not fully grasping the material. Homework also serves as a reference for teachers during parent-teacher conferences (“The Good Schools Guide”). Without homework, teachers would have to find other methods to gauge student
Especially after my 21st birthday I have found it is easier to get off task and invest my time in non-productive things than even. What I have had to train myself to do is not necessarily go over everything for my class, but spend time on what matters, homework. Darshanand Ramdass, and Barry J. Zimmerman wrote “Developing Self-Regulation Skills: The Important Role of Homework” in which they conduct a study to see if homework really benefits a student, they found that “college levels showed a positive relationship between homework and a range of self-regulation skills, implying that homework facilities the development of self-regulation skills and enhances learning” (215). My teachers were right homework does help. With or without my organized schedule a quick drink with friends will always be tempting, but the discipline to stick to my color-coded planner will help me get my work done.

The debate over homework has become a controversial one throughout the years. Most of the general population is on the uprise to stop homework, while education providers try to endure its existence. While the general population see homework as a burden and unnecessary, the real idea of homework creates an obvious path of success. Part of that path to success is do to the instructors use of homework in the correct manner. While the other path, is the completion and practice a student puts forth for the understanding of the topic at hand. We create the sense of, why homework? Previous research has helped show a usefulness of homework throughout our education system (e.g. Kenny, 2013; Marzano, 2007; Jorgenson, 2013; Griffith, 2013; Dejka, 2014). While research has been conducted, there is never one concise choice that everyone can agree with. That is why the topic of homework is of such high debate. The idea of homework, though, gives us the opportunity to expand our learning and preparing us for what lies ahead.
