Odysseus’ journey was not one for the faint of heart; he had to exemplify many admirable traits, including loyalty to his home and bravery even in the face of danger. One example of Odysseus’ loyalty is his guilt upon sleeping with Calypso. He feels he is required to lie with her out of duty (and safety) but sombers around afterwards due to the pain of being unfaithful to his wife Penelope. His body may lie in a foreign land and with a foreign woman, but his heart continues to thrive with his true home, Penelope in Ithaca. Loyalty is not the only quality a hero of Odysseus’ caliber must prove; he must also be brave. Danger lurking around every corner to strike down the righteous hero is an essential theme in epics such as The Odyssey, but our
Loyalty appears many times throughout the course of The Odyssey. Circe let Odysseus and his crew stay with her for an entire year. She gave Odysseus advice about how to get to the underworld to meet the blind prophet Tiresias, along with advice on defeating the beasts Scylla and the sirens. Circe was crucial for Odysseus's survival. His crew might have lasted too if only they listened to her as well. Circe also leads Odysseus to become more humble in the end because, in a way, she makes it so he can't make all of the rules and plans anymore, but just tells his men what she says is the right thing to
Many sides of Odysseus character is exposed through the challenges that he faces. Though he and his crew face crisis and restrictions every step of the way throughout the book. Odysseus still remains humble and sustains his great leadership skills; he longs to see his wife. Loyalty, as defined in the odyssey seems to be the constant devotion to someone, the hopefully longing of their return and victory. Through the use of the characters Penelope, Telemachus and emaeus loyalty is demonstrated to Odysseus who is
In Homer’s timeless epic, The odyssey. Odysseus King of Ithaca is a true hero. A hero is someone who is loyal to their family, god or gods, and their Country. Would you go to war if you knew you would get lost at sea for 20 years and lose all of your men?
Stuck between a rock and a hard place. Or should I say stuck between Charybdis and Scylla. Without loyalty to his crew his crew might learn to not trust their leader and not work with him to achieve his goals. As readers can see in The Odyssey by Homer, translated by Robert Fagles, the necessity of loyalty diminishes if the sender or receiver isn’t deserving of this necessary trait. Throughout the poem, Odysseus treats his crew progressively worse and worse on his 10 year trip to reach his home, Ithaca. This diminishes his crew's loyalty to him. However, unaccepting of his consequences Odysseus pushes his crew until the end. Although Odysseus may appear loyal to his crew at times because of what Odysseus does, his actions prove that his is
Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and the main character in homer’s The Odyssey, was gone for twenty years before finally returning to his family and his homeland. He struggled through many hardships and lost many loyal companions. The King of Ithaca would not have made it home without the assistance of the Greek gods. Despite all of the help and advice that Odysseus receives from the gods, he is a very brave man because his courage and daring in the cave of the Cyclops, his inability to give up and abandon his men on Circe’s island, and his flawless following of the gods instructions are acts of bravery that is uncommon in most men.
The Odyssey is an epic poem by Homer, and it takes place after the Trojan War with Odysseus being the hero. Odysseus always has allies with him when danger is afoot, which is often. Odysseus’ crew is loyal to him during the voyage home. The allies he makes throughout his journey are loyal to him and help him return home safely. His family demonstrates their loyalty to him when he returns home by helping to defeat the Suitors. Whenever Odysseus is facing peril, the people close to him always help him and this demonstrates loyalty.
The Odyssey by Homer shows many inspiring traits from ancient Greek culture. Throughout this Epic Poem, withstanding loyalty is the truest act of strength and bravery. Loyalty is revealed in the odyssey firstly when Hermes witnesses Odysseus staring out at the sea, depressed because he misses his family. Even though the island Odysseus is on is filled with wonder, he is loyal to his family. Next loyalty is shown through Odysseus when he rushes to save his men from Circe’s influence. Even though he could have listened to Eurylochus who tells him they should leave. Loyalty is then shown when Odysseus risks putting himself through more danger, by going back to Circe’s island to bury his fallen team member, Elpenor. Another example of loyalty is exposed through Odysseus’ dog, Argos, when Odysseus comes home from his long journey and sees his beloved dog uncared for and weak. Argos shows love for Odysseus and dies soon after he sees his master. IAs though Argos was waiting for Odysseus’ return. Lastly loyalty is displayed as Penelope is grieving her husband, even after twenty years.
As the king of Ithaca and the crew leader of several men accompanying him on his focal return journey from the site of the Trojan War, Odysseus is necessarily loyal to his men, and to his denizens, as otherwise, Ithaca would falter, and the men on board with him would not be able to withstand the lengthy, epic journey as they had done. The demonstrations of this vital heroic character trait are numerous, such as when Odysseus remains alongside his supportive crew men during an assault upon his ships, with only the one upon which the previous portion of the odyssey had been conducted remaining afterward, and when his men are in despair at his temporary absence, coming to them in order to not only assuage them, but more importantly to signal to all of them that he would always be with them; that he would be their natural, passionate
Loyalty is an important factor for success. When someone comes across a challenge loyalty may be the most important thing to give them the will to fight to victory. In The Odyssey, there were many people who were loyal or disloyal. Most of the ones who were loyal got what they wanted in the end because they stuck through with what they believed. The ones who were not loyal were led to failure or suffering. The Odyssey shows a few examples of how loyalty effects success.
Very rare are there people who are truly loyal. The definition of loyalty is to strongly support. In Homer’s epic poem, “The Odyssey,” there are two people that are consistently loyal to Odysseus through the whole story. Odysseus has been away from Ithaca for twenty years. He has been trying to get home from the Trojan War.
What does the word loyalty mean to you? Well to me loyalty means caring and never giving up on someone or something. It also stands for commitment, and in the book The Odyssey, loyalty is shown in many way, through love, through fighting, and through waiting. Odysseus wife, Penelope, is loyal to him for many years, and when suitors move in the their castle to take the spot of Odysseus, she still is loyal to him. Penelope is loyal to Odysseus after she wept for 20 years for him to return, avoided marrying a suitor, and tested Odysseus when he returned.
What is being loyal to someone mean? Well being loyal means the quality of being loyal to someone or something. And in the epic poem Odyssey by Homer translated by Robert Fagles Odysseus does not show that to his crew. Even though Odysseus does not show loyalty to his crew he cares about his crew he doesn't deserve full loyalty from his crew members because he puts his crew in unknown places , does not communicate with them , and he waste time on his journey. but some may say that Odysseus helps his crew when they need the help and he is caring for them. They also might say that he is trying to get the crew out of hard situation like with the lotus eaters when his crew lost all memory he knew that they were in danger so he got

The theme of loyalty repeats many times throughout the Odyssey. But no other character shows the same great deal of loyalty as the wife of Odysseus, Penelope. Penelope demonstrates her loyalty to her husband by remaining faithful to him in 30 years of his absence. Even as suitors court her in marriage. Penelope would not choose to marry a suitor until she was certain Odysseus had died.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus faces many trial and tribulations on his way home from the Trojan War. On Odysseus’ 10 year journey to Ithaca, he is pressed with hardships that test the strength of his values. Values, in the time of the ancient Greeks, were about hospitality, intelligence, order, and several others that were a part of everyday life. While Odysseus encounters instances of these values or contrasting elements of these values, one of the largest themes of The Odyssey is loyalty.
