Machu Picchu : The New Seven Wonders Of The World

Machu Picchu is one of the great Wonders of the World and a popular travel destination. The massive 15th century Inca citadel is located in Peru, sitting over 2,000-metres above the sea level. The mysterious structures have tickled our imagination ever since it was brought to the world’s attention in 1911.

Starting it off with what made Machu Picchu so amazing, was the type of stone it was built with. The building was made out of granite ashlars, was 79 acres wide and long, and was 7,800 feet above sea level on the Peruvian Andes. High in the Andean mountain range, nestled on a ridge between two mountains high above the valley floor below sits the amazing city and archaeological site of Machu Picchu. Machu Picchu is about 1400 kilometers south of the Equator on the eastern slope of the Peruvian Andes. The site lies near the head waters of the Amazon River and is on the ridge between two prominent mountain peaks – Machu Picchu and Hauyna Picchu – about 500 meters above the valley bottom (Wright and Kenneth, 2-3). Machu Picchu, believed to be the royal estate of the Inca ruler Pachacuti, is the most well-known of all the Inca archaeological sites. The second theory was that it was the city of the Inca Wiraqocha, eighth king of Cusco. The Incas new the true personality of the King: that he was cruel and favoured the rich. When he died, his youngest son ordered his city, Machu Picchu, to be abandoned. His people agreed and the city was gradually covered in vegetation, not to be seen until the 1900’s.

About 100 years ago, archaeologists found an entire city that was not destroyed by the Spanish invaders. The City of Machu Picchu was found high up in the Andes Mountains (Donn). Archaeologists found many amazing artifacts such as ruins of temples, palaces, fortresses, pottery and statues. One of the most exciting finds to researchers was an Intihuatana. The Intihuatana was pyramid that was built so the Incas could speak to their gods.

Cusco, Peru, one of the oldest cities in the Americas is 3,400 meters above sea level on the Huatanay river among several mountain ranges. It has a population of 435,114, attracting approximately 2 million visitors per year. This intriguing Peruvian city is an Incan Empire gateway into the world-renowned ancient city of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in the southern Sierra region. In the first place, Machu Picchu is an amazing travel place because of its history. An American explorer named Hiram Bingham is pronounced to be the person who discovered Machu Picchu once again. Bingham has discovered the amazement walls of granite ashlars (stone building blocks) and the larger stones weighed about 10 to 15 tons. Bingham had snapped photos, scribbled notes, and sketched maps before his military escort swarmed over the ruins. He also discovered the long forgotten remains of Vilcabamba, the last capital of the Inca but it was not for long. In the first source, it states, "Only a few days later, Bingham came upon a larger set of ruins, some 60 miles away."

While much of Machu Picchu is in ruins many natives are rebuilding it using the secrets passed down the generations. Machu Picchu translates to old peak, which is a fitting name as the location of Machu Picchu is rather high up on the mountains of the Andes.

The location of my sacred travel site is Peru. Machu Picchu was built around 1450, at the height of the Inca culture. It was abandoned just over 100 years later in 1572. Machu Picchu is in the Southern Hemisphere, it is 50 kilometers northwest of Cusco. It has wet and dry seasons, with the majority of annual rain falling from October through to April.
