INTRODUCTION
After opening business in 1879 the Madison Square Garden Company has evolved into a multiple industry powerhouse finding success in industries such as Sporting, Entertainment, and Media. It operates in the world’s largest entertainment market in New York City, New York making it the ideal company to find success in multiple industries and one of the very few sporting franchises that trades publicly.
The MSG Company owns and operates multiple sporting franchises to include: the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers, the New York Liberty, the Westchester Knicks, and the Hartford Wolf Pack. These various franchises allow for a deep-rooted connection amongst the urban population of New York City and the MSG Company. The history of some of the sporting franchises spans
Over the last 15 years, “sixty-four new major league facilities were built… One high-profile construction deal is Yankee Stadium, which was originally built in 1923 for $2 million (Sanderson).” Two million dollars in 1923 adjusted for inflation is $29,228,452.38. In 2005, the New York Yankees announced plans to build a new stadium. “The construction cost is expected to be around $1.3 billion, which the Yankees will pay for. New York City is projected to spend $220 million on infrastructure and various other improvements across the area (Robertson).”
From 1953 to 1955, three franchises were relocated, all of which had been in markets with two or more teams. Prior to the 1958 season, the two New York City teams in the NL, the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants, moved westward; the Dodgers relocated to Los Angeles, while San Francisco became the new home of the Giants.[1] New York City sought a replacement NL franchise, and by December 1958 MLB had created an Expansion Committee.[1] Despite the formation of the group, MLB displayed little intention of adding a New York team.[2] The city had beaten MLB to planning for future expansion, with the formation of the Mayor's Committee shortly after the Dodgers and Giants
World cities are centres for a range of cultural facilities and world entertainment. They have theatres, opera houses, large entertainment. They host major cultural and sporting events ranging from art exhibitions to tennis tournaments. The 2008 Beijing Olympics and Fifa’s world cup in Munich both were viewed by over a billion people worldwide. New York for example has a very strong cultural authority with the New York Times reporting that in 2010 48.7 million people visited New York spending $31 billion, which is almost 7% increase when compared to the 45 million in 2009. New York is home to a range of museums such as the museum of modern art and the Guggenheim, Broadway, famous universities such as Colombia and NYU, and centres for the arts such as the Julliard School and Lincon centre. Therefore the cultural authority of a world city stems from its ability to provide
Arguably, this one catches the eye, more significantly than all other stadiums in the world. Basically, there is no way to compare the Colosseum to Madison Square Garden Stadium or Emirates Stadium. The Colosseum is notorious as a prominently marvelous symbol of ancient Rome. This stadium has been and is a revolutionary likeness of vicissitude in manufacturing and composition, having been intact for almost 2000 years. By being most utile, the hugest, and to a greater extent, the most methodologically progressive architecture of its time, this massive Gargantuan essentially paved the way for thousands of postliminary stadiums. Not until the early 20th centuries, nothing could even come close to matching the Colosseum’s luxuriousness.
The Yankees plan on opening a Metro-North train stop right at the stadium so that fans from neighboring states can easily arrive and depart the game without dealing with the subway or the street traffic, which takes away from the hustle and bustle of the pregame street activities. This includes souvenir shops, food vendors etc. And finally, the most un-baseball related aspect of the new stadium on the list is the fact that Yankee Stadium will be open year round with clubs, restaurants, banquet rooms, conference rooms and business centers, and will host corporate outings, business meetings, bat mitzvahs, seminars and weddings (M.L.B. Advanced Media, “New Yankee Stadium Relocation Guide”).
The Polo Grounds. If you’re a baseball fan you’ll probably know about it because it makes Wrigley Field look cheaply made. The stadium was known as the bathtub for its oval like look that it gave off and people still remember it to this day. The stadium build in the late 1800’s was torn down in 64’ but many people who remember the days the Giants were living in New York.
Have you ever been to New York city? New York City is a big place. There is five boroughs and many people. Also, there is many things to learn and see. 911 attacks, transportation, and tourist attractions are the three most interesting and important things about New York City.
The more popular teams such as the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, and New York Giants helps the less popular, and weaker teams through playing these larger teams. These less popular teams made profit by ticket sales at the gate, because more people were attracted to watching the big teams come to their stadium and
Over a 114-year period between 1901 and 2015, the New York Yankees baseball organization has taken sole positioning as the most successful franchise in the professional baseball world. As a whole the franchise has won: 43 American League pennants and 27 world championship titles. With statistics and accomplishments this vast, it is no wonders the Yankees are renowned and acknowledged as one of the most outstanding baseball teams in the sport. The New York Yankee’s franchise was founded in 1901, in Baltimore, Maryland. The franchise played its inaugural season two year later on January 9, 1903. The founders of this historic franchise organization were two gentlemen by the names of Frank Farrell and Bill Devery. This franchise has dominated the sport of Major League Baseball over a century, recording 20 seasons with at least 100 wins “Hiergesell.” When the franchise was moved to Manhattan from Baltimore they received the name Highlanders and were relocated to their new home field known as Hilltop Park “Yankees Timeline.” The 1923 squad would always be the most memorable team because they defeated the New York Giants to earn the first of a total of 27 World Series championships (the all-time record in professional baseball). The New York Yankees (1936-1939 and 1949-1953) and the Oakland A’s (1972-1974), are the only two franchises in all of baseball to win the fall classic in three consecutive seasons. The Yankees are one of the few franchises in the sport of Major League
At that time, many were living through a prosperous and social change of status. With towns growing into cities and many businesses growing, sports stadiums were being built as well. In the 1920s boxing and baseball were the first professional sports. (AS). As an addition to the towns, Yankees stadium and Madison Square Garden were built in New York City for their sports teams. As a matter of fact, according to American Sports and 1920s, Madison Square Garden was rebuilt in 1925 in order to hold the many excited viewers of these events such as boxing, basketball and ice hockey, which grew like wildfire over the years. (AS). New York was a big town growing even bigger with these stadiums, drawing the attention of many men and their

New York is rich in history. New York’s history starts with 5 independent states joining together to make Greater New York. Over a span of three years Greater New York grew to 360 square miles filled with 3,350,000 people. One of the biggest attacks on US soil would happen In New York when two hijacked planes would crash into the twin towers of the world trade center. “Thanks to the city’s diversity and vibrant intellectual life it remains the cultural capital of the United states.” “New York City ”New York’s history is everywhere you look.
Not only do the “major leagues” participate in the marketing process but so do the smaller, “minor leagues” do as well. Every athletic organization, big or small, needs sports marketing for its survival. Sports marketing is needed because it helps the athletic organizations obtain profit, which is needed for survival.
Additionally, as new teams are created and teams are relocated, teams have the opportunity to create their own identity. One example of this is the Brooklyn Nets, who rather than trying to establish their identity through excellent play on the court, have been working hard to identify strongly with the borough of Brooklyn, giving their fans the appearance of being true to Brooklyn. Brett Yormark, the chief executive of the Brooklyn Nets said, “We Brooklyn-ized who we are, which I think is critical. The goal is to become a lifestyle brand”. Because of this, fans of the Brooklyn Nets take on a group identity representative of the culture that is prominent in Brooklyn. The newest example of a team choosing their identity is
Sports' marketing is a comparatively new field and dimension within the broad concept of marketing. It is continuously evolving and changing today as society combats the free market to decide the legal and ethical limitations of business today. It is significant to note that this discipline within marketing is not clearly defined. Sports today use corporate sponsorships and television money in order to contend and pay for top quality athletes. Those companies use teams, leagues, colleges, and individuals to make a distinction between their products in a very aggressive business environment. What makes up sports marketing to one person could be considered selling out to another. The business world keeps pushing to find a competitive advantage and the sports world has in general welcomed the money offered (Weikel, n.d.).
