1. What are some of the advantages to mixed method (MM) research? 2. How could a mixed method research design be used to answer the PICO question that you developed at the beginning of the semester? I must admit that I was a person who strongly believed in the quantitative method research up until I read the assigned reading for this week. Now I know that mixed method research is actually the best option to validate the results of a research study. As far as some advantages of mixed methods are concerned, I would like to implement my PICO question while answering the question. Since, a couple weeks ago we changed discussion groups, I would like to inform this group that my PICO question was: In order to prevent surgical incision infection …show more content…
One of the reasons is that I could collect all quantitative data in regards to post-op surgical site infection and have my findings based on those results. However, what I would be missing is the fact that I really do not know if my patients/participant followed their discharge instructions and cleaned their incision accordingly. By interviewing all the participants about how much they cared about their incisions, I would be able to find out, is it really one type of cleaning solution better than the other one, or some of the participants did not follow their discharge instructions and ended up with a surgical site infection. I believe that the biggest advantage of the mixed methods is that by utilizing qualitative and quantitative results in the study, the results of the study are more understandable and potentially can be implemented in practice ( if we talk about nursing) at the faster rate. Complementarity, practicality, incrementality, enhanced validity, and collaboration are the advantages of the mixed method research mentioned by Polit and Beck
The methodology used will be my questionnaire; this will be shown in contrast within results analysis in the form of pictorial results and statistical evidence.
In this assignment I will be comparing the different types of research methodologies for health and social care.
Analyze the scientific merit of the selected design. How might you have designed this study differently?
There are many benefits of utilizing quantitative methods in research. The benefits are precise numerical data, previously constructed theories can be tested and validated, results can be generated from sufficient random samples sizes, and less time is needed for data analysis. The weaknesses of quantitative methods are that due to the focus of the theory used the researcher may miss phenomena occurring, or the information gained may be too general to be applied to the individuals. The other weaknesses are colleagues may not understand the categories used, and colleagues may not understand the theories used by the researchers. (Zikmund et al, 2010) Qualitative Methods
Sage (2009) explains that Qualitative information is collected first to enhance the understanding of the phenomenon under study. Furthermore, Polit and Beck (2012) explains the importance of Mixed Method in research and stated that a hypothesis that is supported by information, which is complementary brings about confidence in the validity of the results.
I would be more likely to believe quantitative research if the data is from a large sample. If it’s just 50 people sampled, such as with some of imagery research I have read, I’m not as likely to believe it. If the researcher has to utilize multiple statistical models, I’m less likely to believe, as well. When I’m skeptical, I then have to spend more time researching other journal articles in an attempt to find something that will validate or invalidate that particular study in question. This takes considerable time, but I believe it’s required in order to make sure that I’m not misleading someone and possibly leading them astray. Mixed methods approach provides a more complete understanding of a research problem than either quantitative or qualitative data alone (Creswell, 2014). I concur.
One way a mixed method is used is when the quantitative approach or qualitative approach, by itself, is inadequate to develop multiple perspectives and a complete understanding about a research problem (). It this study, the researcher want to investigate whether parental perception of the type of involvement in the EoL DMP for their child in the NICU is related to their long-term grief outcome. To me, both parental perception and long-term grief outcome contain several aspects and require further exploring. In order to obtain how the parents feel about their involvement in EoL DMP, qualitative study is suitable because it focuses on contexts and meaning of human lives and experiences.
Convergent design – The researcher compares and merge the results of both quantitative and qualitative data to find a relationship between the two databases (Creswell & Plano Clark, 2018).

Mixed methods researchers advance the weight or priority to the collection of quantitative and qualitative data. Three options are available to the researcher for prioritizing data:
qualitative methodology. Nevertheless, quantitative methods are also used in conjunction with qualitative methods. This methodology called mixed method inquiry works well for the science of psychology.
A researcher has to choose a topic of interest to investigate and the topic usually determines what type of design to use conduct research. The two designs (quantitative and qualitative) that researchers will choose from depends on the research questions and hypothesis. In most cases the designs will contain some of the same elements but the data, and results will differ in the end. This paper will examine quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods research design of the two articles.
A number of researchers discussed the mixed methods approach to investigation. According to Tashakkori and Teddlie (2003), it emerged in the mid to late 1900s and according to Cresswell (2009), by using a mixed methods approach to investigation, researchers integrate methods of gathering or studying data from the quantitative and qualitative research methods in a single research investigation.
Besides that, I also figured out that epistemology is firmly grounded in the ontological belief that the actions of human subjects is noticeable of a methodical and ruled by administered of the external reality. Therefore, there is a theoretical view that human behaviors and actions are principally determined by stimuli which are not of their own making according to scholar Bracken, 2010. Therefore, there is an understanding that a research methodology used by researchers which makes them produces differing sets of data and to emphasize upon outcomes in contradictory ways by depending upon on ontological and epistemological positioning. Hence, this paper will focus on the ontological position of mixed methods methodology.
This article uses a mixed methods research design. Discuss the characteristics of a mixed methods research. Within the discussion, speak to the strengths and weaknesses of this method. Explain why this study used this approach.
