Music has been playing a big role in film since sound could be added to a film, which takes us all the way back to the early 1900’s. Music may be something we listen to in the car, but songs can be used to portray many different factors in a film. Music can hint the viewer as to what the mood of characters may be, the setting of a given place, or even the time frame in which the movie took place. Music helps the director steer their movie in one way or another, depending on their choice of music. The movie Almost Famous featured portions of 68 different songs performed by various artists throughout the 60’s and early 70’s.
For a movie that revolves around music it comes to no surprise that in the very first minutes of the movie playing a song is already playing. The song played is The Chipmunk Song by The Chipmunks. Now when you look at the screen, you’d find yourself a bit confused as to why Christmas music is playing during what appears to be summer time. This selection proves to be significant because the Christmas music opens us up to the personality of Anita and William’s over-protective, christian-based, traditional valued mother. Their mother seeks to protect the kids from everything of the world which is where she celebrates Christmas in September, because it isn’t commercialized at that time.
